Oil Minister Gholam Hossein Nozari said the oil field held 1.1 billion barrels of sweet crude oil

Quick. Someone check the pixels. I know some of you have seen a few shops in your days.

b) this lowers gas prices a bit in North America
c) 1. everybody panic at the gas pumps!
2. everybody panic at the gas pumps near discos!

Yeah, no kidding--I wish we had a shortsighted energy agenda calling for the use of a demonstrably-dwindling resource rather than the utilization of our gazillion-dollar budgets to come up with less-finite energy sources actually based on American soil.

Nocens 2008-07-13 08:22:04 PM

I know that was sarcasm but the US did actually take a fair whack of the oil.

Not yet, but after some fabricated intelligence briefings that get blown out of proportion and invented ties to Al Queda, everyone will be sayin "Let's Roll"

Manfred J. Hattan 2008-07-13 08:24:03 PM
Meh. 1 billion barrels is hardly worth having a whole invasion over, particularly since only a quarter of it is recoverable even at these insane prices. There's more than that in the ANWR. Hell, it's starting to look like there might be more than that in the Bakken, and only dreamers thought that 18 months ago.

It would go a long way toward providing for the needs of free Kurdistan. but me and William Safire are the only two non-Kurds clinging to that pipedream.

Oh the problem in the US is not with knowing where the oil is...we already know. The problem is getting the bureaucrats and people who have a crying fit when a blade of grass gets disturbed to let someone drill for it and pump it out of the earth.

FYI: The ultimate solution to our energy problems is to eliminate completely our dependence on fossil fuels...that also will more than likely go a long way toward fixing our environment. Unfortunately the US government seems to find all sorts of things besides alternative energy research to spend money on (entitlement programs being the biggest expense), so there will be no miracle solutions in the next 10-20 years.

"Start drilling or start walking" is closer than you think.

give me doughnuts [TotalFark] 2008-07-13 08:27:26 PM
Now it is even more important to develope algae-based bio-fuels, wind farms, clean-coal, and every other non-petroleum energy source we can...

...AND drill in ANWAR and on the continental shelves.

It'll be interesting how they package that one up. Extremist Sunni terrorist organisation working with a batshiat fundamentalist Shia regime. Hmmmm.

But then again, they can always play the "they united temporarily because they hate our freedoms" card. Most people are ignorant and dumb enough to fall for that.

Up. Everything makes gas prices go up. If they suddenly found a way to make gasoline from seawater, gas prices would hit $15 a gallon. In fact, if they discovered that "abiotic" oil source people have been nattering about, gas would become so expensive the entire world economy would collapse.

Pretty much the exact opposite, the major oil companies throughout the world lobbied against privatization of any of Iraq's oilfields and have been profiting the last few years by limiting Iraq's production capabalities effectively to nil.

Heh. Any of you people ever wonder where all that money eventually goes? After the first 20 billion or so, even an oil sheik has to do something with it other than sock it away in a Swiss bank account or buy toys for the military. Seriously, anybody ever add up how farking much money seems to vanish down a black hole somewhere? Hundreds of billions of dollars. It can't just get socked away somewhere.

Same for government line-item budgets. $10,000 toilet seats? Really? Those budgets go on for literally hundreds of pages - sometimes with totals or subtotals perhaps every 20 pages or so. Ever actually added one of them up? Didn't think so.

Think about it. Hundreds of billions of dollars. Going where?

Specifically, I have this part.

This is where its mixed bag for me. The oil companies were lobbying before Iraq war II to drop sanctions so they could get in Iran and Iraq. I've been looking for direct evidence that they were behind this change.

why should anyone want to invade iran when we know president obama will head to iran, give them warm hugs and after a talk with ahmadinejad, the people of iran will love us, bring the price of gasoline back to $1.25/gal and both obama and ahmadinejad will laugh at how "whitey" was the problem.
