Hell, everybodies head is exploding on this one.

Brettster808 [TotalFark] 2008-07-13 03:45:37 PM
John Lennon wasn't an atheist and "Imagine" wasn't an atheist song per se. The song was meant to be taken conceptually not literally. As in - just imagine what we could have if we put aside those things for moment that create tension between us. Atheists certainly have attached the song to their cause however.

The same applies to the song "God" to which HHH references one of the song's lines though out of context.

In the song "God' Lennon lyrically purges everything he believes in or was taught about following the break-up of the Beatles in order to cleanse himself and move on with Yoko. In "God" he also sings the line "I don't believe in Beatles" and also "Zimmerman" (Dylan), and "Elvis" but that obviously wasn't the case either.

Lennon did a ton of acid, and he dug whatever he dug at the moment.

Ya know, it's entirely possible to think Christ said and stood for some great things without being a Christian. I'm an agnostic, and it's not Jesus I have a problem with, it's his fanboys.

Well, they were more popular than Jesus.

Yes subby...because Lennon identified with the biblical Christ and his message, the Beatles were a Christian band. Yep. That's exactly what it means.

Exactly. I'm an atheist, and I'm a big fan of the moral teachings of Christ. I basically take Thomas Jefferson's view of the Bible - strip out all the unbelievable magic stuff, and you're left with a pretty awesome moral code.

Say the word and you'll be free
Say the word and be like me
Say the word I'm thinking of
Have you heard the word is love?
It's so fine, It's sunshine
It's the word, love
In the beginning I misunderstood
But now I've got it, the word is good

Exactly. It's sort of sad just how much his teachings were corrupted and how few of his "believers" actually follow his teachings.

He probably believed it at the time he said it. Musicians and actors tend to believe in something very strongly before they believe very strongly in something else a few minutes later.

At least he wasn't a Scientologist.

Jesus was way cool
Everybody liked Jesus
Everybody wanted to hang out with him
Anything he wanted to do, he did
He turned water into wine
And if he wanted to
He could have turned wheat into marijuana
Or sugar into cocaine
Or vitamin pills into amphetamines

He walked on the water
And swam on the land
He would tell these stories
And people would listen
He was really cool

If you were blind or lame
You just went to Jesus
And he would put his hands on you
And you would be healed
That's so cool

He could've played guitar better than Hendrix
He could've told the future
He could've baked the most delicious cake in the world
He could've scored more goals than Wayne Gretzky
He could've danced better than Barishnikov
Jesus could have been funnier than any comedian you can think of
Jesus was way cool

He told people to eat his body and drink his blood
That's so cool
Jesus was so cool
But then some people got jealous of how cool he was
So they killed him
But then he rose from the dead
He rose from the dead, danced around
Then went up to heaven
I mean, that's so cool
Jesus was way cool

No wonder there are so many Christians

tHERE's nothing wrong with admiring true Christ-like behavior, like turning the other cheek or doing unto others as you would have them do unto you.

doesn't make Lennon a religious freak.
He was equally impressed by Buddah, I imagine.

I hope you don't have his view--he said that all that magic stuff was put in there by the Jews.

The only instance of Imagine having anything to do with Atheism that I have ever heard of is the stupid comparison of "Imagine No Religion" played over images of Naziism in Expelled.

Batman in the Operating Room:He probably believed it at the time he said it. Musicians and actors tend to believe in something very strongly before they believe very strongly in something else a few minutes later.

Once he got on board with the peace and love thing, that was pretty much his personal message for the rest of his life.

There's a scene in the "Imagine: John Lennon" documentary where some random stoner shows up at his estate, and instead of calling the cops, Lennon said, "Are you hungry?" and invited him in and fed him. I think Jesus would approve.

"In 1966 the Rutles faced the biggest threat to their careers. Nasty in a widely quoted interview had apparently claimed that the Rutles were bigger than God, and was reported to have gone on to say that God had never had a hit record.

The story spread like wildfire in America. Many fans burnt their albums, many more burnt their fingers attempting to burn their albums. Album sales sky-rocketed. People were buying them just to burn them.

But in fact it was all a ghastly mistake. Nasty, talking to a slightly deaf journalist, had claimed only that the Rutles were bigger than Rod. Rod Stewart would not be big for another eight years, and certainly at this stage hadn't had a hit. At a press conference, Nasty apologized to God, Rod and the press, and the tour went ahead as planned. It would be the Rutles' last."

The god of the bible is a terrible character.

Not to get a Bevetity on you, but you seem to not understand the concept of the trinity. The father, the son and the holy ghost are all god, with different personalities and stuff. So they can be the same entity while being the father role, the friend role and the crazy murdering ninja role.
