Can you imagine imagining something any more ridiculous?

I support abstinence for many Texans too.

Maybe they could come home and tell you all the ways they learned in school to breathe.

Texas is also top 5 in teen pregnancy rate. Correlation or causation?

Everybody likes to fark. Texans are just really bad at that whole 'not knocking the girl up' thing, apparently. I wonder why that is?

I'd love to see a state-by-state breakdown of per capita condom sales.

Lionel Mandrake [TotalFark] 2008-07-13 12:46:04 PM
Federal statistics in June showed that 52.9 percent of Texas students in ninth through 12th grades had sexual intercourse, compared with 47.8 nationally.

The federal government has spent $1.1 billion on funding for abstinence programs since 1982, according to federal officials. Texas has spent more than other state - almost $117 million, including $32.4 million of its own money.

Seems to be working wonders, as abstinence education always does.

Once again, ideology trumps pragmatism in God's Country.

Sleeping Monkey [TotalFark] 2008-07-13 01:06:43 PM
States like Texas that provide only abstinence-only education should be denied federal funds for social programs. If they want to ignore reality and create a bunch of single, teenage mothers who can't support their children on their own, then they should be the ones to pay for the consequences of their stupidity.

Saborlas [TotalFark] 2008-07-13 01:22:15 PM
No need to mess with Texas. They mess with themselves enough as it is.

The money for the abstinence-only programs comes from the feds attached to other money for other actually useful programs. If you want the funding for the good programs from the Feds, you have to teach the abstinence-only program.

It's about the money.

Because 14 year-old Mexican girls are hyper-fertile.

Some wasting disease, causes bloating, cramps, some sort of milky white infusion to inflate the mammary glans - often accompanied by nausea and an increased appetite and hormonal swings. Top scientists are still working on a cure.

Also,
Just a thought but they should crush up "the morning after pill" and add it to the girls juices and milk when they are finished with nap time.

/Just a thought

But on a serious note I remember when Mexican girls turned 15 we usuaully took bets on how long they had before they looked like they were smuggling a basketballs under thier shirts. Usually they got preggers by men in thier 20s'

/not racist
//just what I have seen

Do y'all really think that kids in Texas don't know about condoms and birth control? School doesn't teach anybody anything, so you guys should stop caring so much about abstinence being taught in school. It really has nothing to do with the teenage birth rate.

This, unfortunately.

The majority of our teen pregnancies are hispanic girls from low income households. And, since this is Texas, guess where they came from...

/Not trying to be a douche, thats just the way it is

This. Liberal california has a nearly as high teenage preggers rate. Mexicans contribute highly, they tend to have a lower economic standing and are largely catholic. Blame nazi pope for brainwashing huge populations against safe sex, health class in school is a joke.

thank you. I was going to ask if anyone had any stats on teen pregnancy in Texas.

While the national teen birth rate has slowed, Texas has made far less headway, alarming public health officials and child advocates.

What are the statistics for pregnancy rates?

Ooh, racist and stupid! You win!

Abstinence-only leads to increased pregnancy rates. That's what it's intended to do.

TheJoe03:Do y'all really think that kids in Texas don't know about condoms and birth control? School doesn't teach anybody anything, so you guys should stop caring so much about abstinence being taught in school. It really has nothing to do with the teenage birth rate.

Yes, they really don't know. They think that you can't get pregnant the first time, you can't get pregnant if you douche afterwards, or if you hold your breath, or all sorts of other crap.

Most important, if you tell people it's a sin to *plan* to have sex, they get preggers. They don't stop having sex; they just refuse to admit to themselves that's what they'll do.

If you look at the people advocating abstinence only, they don't even claim it reduces pregnancy; they think it reduces sex outside of marriage.

Inflatable Rhetoric 2008-07-13 03:56:24 PM
FTA: Abstinence supporters say it's the job of parents, not the schools, to determine how much their teenage children know about contraceptives.

"Can you imagine being a parent and having your child come home and tell you all the ways they learned in school that you can (have sex)?" said Republican state Rep. Rob Eissler, chairman of the House Public Education Committee.

It's similar to using computers, the kids can give you advice.

StilettosandSkills 2008-07-13 03:58:12 PM
I live in Houston but grew up in Lake Jackson. I don't think pregger rates have anything to do with it being Texas... We are on the mexican border and we took the large majority of the Katrina "victims". Coincidence?

/No.

I'm not defending abstinence programs at all, I just think it's a non-issue that has no real affect on birth rate or how many people are having sex. No one gives a shiat about health class so it really doesn't matter what the hell they teach.
