I couldn't imagine living in rural Vietnam, with all of those land mines that still haven't been found.

"The bomb - about 6 feet long - was found by workers at a construction site last month"

So they waited a month before doing anything?

The bomb must have had amazing Camouflage abilities to remain in this "crowded residential area", unseen, for 65 years.

This happens all the time in the UK. You'd be amazed how deep into the earth something weighing 1000 lbs dropped from 20,000 feet will go. Perhaps where this fell, they are building a larger building that needs a deeper foundation or a larger footprint than the structure that was there previously.

Post WWII, the US Strategic Bombing Survey found that out of every 5 bombs dropped by the allies did not explode. A 20% dud rate, combined with high altitude bombing, leads to this sort of thing.

Sorry to bring history, science, and facts into all this, kids. I now return you to your poop jokes.

This is why certain parts of Hawaii (Makua Valley on Oahu, the Pohakuloa range on the Big Island, various parts of the island of Kahoolawe, and probably a couple other places) can be dangerous to walk into unescorted. Decades of bombing in those areas means there's plenty of unexploded stuff waiting to go off.

Are there any recorded instances of these large WW2 munitions actually exploding when accidentally dug up after, say, 40 years of being buried?

Unexploded bombs can get buried in mud or rubble, only to get dug up later.

12.fl.oz.:They still remember the last two bombs we dropped on them.

The ones that were there don't remember anything, kinda like woodstock.

This was all over the news here. It showed up when they were digging in a construction site.

Yes, it was WAAAAAAYYYYYY down underground.

This. Also the amount of earth moved by the bombs which do/did explode can do a pretty damned good job of burying duds.

Well, as it hadn't exploded in the last 60-odd years, I guess they figured they could wait another month or so.

I don't see it happening this way in an extremely crowded residential area. If it fell in a swamp, then I could believe it. Not knowing what sort of construction it is, I suppose it's possible they are building some sort of pier and the bomb was offshore.

You're the guy that pressed the button that dropped the bomb that kills hundreds or even thousands of people.

Feel better about yourself? Of all those people you don't know but that you just mass murdered (more people than most convicted terrorists) imagine how many you would have liked if you met them. You could have flirted with the cute ones, argued with the competitive ones and learned from the smart ones and bought something from the skilled ones.

But no, pressing the button seemed like the right thing to do at the time.

Well I don't know, it just seems like an awkward situation.

Not awkward, it is just reality. We are still finding Japanese balloon bombs along the Pacific coast . . . one killed some kids not too long ago . . . they made them look like toys.

Bombs are still being found all over the world where conflicts occurred, just reality. Not mention mines as someone has already done.

And Noam, I doubt the area was heavily populated 60 years ago, but I don't know how that would make a difference . . . the energy of a streamlined steel 1000 lb object at terminal velocity can penetrate quite a few things (like concrete) so it doesn't have to be swamp.

Thanks. I see these "bomb unearthed" articles from time to time, but couldn't remember reading about any exploding.

Japanese authorities, however, have yet to find this man who was last sighted with the bomb:

I think Mythbusters should tackle this one.

OK. Fair enough. I'll be waiting with bad breath for the Mythbusters program. The problem is they are lousy physicists and probably will boldly and confidently come to the wrong conclusion, as usual, usually. But it is an entertaining program.

As far as I'm concerned, I don't want to be within 114 yards of a 1000lb object at 200+ mph hitting the ground. I've seen what an 11lb dummy warhead at subsonic speeds can do to a hill side.

It was many, many guys' job, man.

The Japanese wouldn't stop fighting even though there were various entreaties made to them. They started the war and had their asses handed back to them, albeit in the most awful and unfortunate way.

As it turns out, the bombs don't much care whether some Internet poster can believe it or not - they're there.

I lived in Hamburg for a few years, and the exact same thing happens there - new buildings with deeper foundations go in, UXO is found, the "Himmelfahrtskommando" (roughly, "heavenly ascension detail") goes in to either defuse or detonate in place. Evacuation is routine, and local radio stations puts it in the traffic news with complete lack of drama.
