"We had some mooners and some female flashers and some people who were nude altogether," said Jim Amormino, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff's Department. "There was also lots of drinking. We felt that it was in the public's interest to shut it down."

The crowd, which included children with their parents as well as middle-aged adults -- stood on the shoulder of a road parallel to the tracks to show themselves. The sideshow included barbecues, T-shirt sales and RV parties.

"RV parties"? Did they think that someone would get the wrong idea if they said "tailgate parties"?

BUTTSUV?

I know a few people that go to this every year. I'm sure they were disappointed.

Interesting to me is, how come nobody got charged with being a sex offender in all this? That seems to be the thing to do with mooners these days...

FTFA": "What was the point of stopping people from enjoying themselves when they were under control?" asked Robert Zoellner, 47, a first-time mooner from Mission Viejo. "Everybody was getting along."

What trade school does one attend to learn that skill?
Or, Better late than never.
Or, Is that a skill that employers prize in their applicants?

Also FTFA:

[Dur-hey]We felt that it was in the public's interest to shut it down.""We felt that we had best do something to justify our existence and live up to our reputation of being oppressive killjoys".

Heavy alcohol consumption was involved?? Why you could bowl me over with a feather.

Surprised that the sheriff had NEVER heard of it before, where has he been FOREVER?

As for the sex offender thing, I think that the fact it has been going on for so long makes it "immune" from that sort of stupidity.

Thankfully even though the spokesperson had never heard of it, those on the scene are probably in the area "just in case" every year for the last few years since there have been more news reports on it.

Oh, come on. I've got to think that there's a huge difference between mooning a train and doing what must have been going on before the cops showed up. I'm sure there were male and female full-frontal flashers and the like. People drunk off their mooning arses etc, etc, etc.

I think mooning a train is PG or maybe PG-13, doing more makes it R.

So I recently rediscovered the movie Pollyanna (I have two kids)

The opening scene shows some boy's bare ass as he swings on a rope into a pond where other kids are skinny dipping.

For a forty-year-old Disney movie, I gotta admit I was a little shocked!

qlenfg 2008-07-13 11:38:34 AM
That event has been going on for years, and people actually go out of their way to ride the train that day to witness it. Guess I should have gone one year as it looks like it will be no more.

We used to do the same thing at motorcycle events when they were held near the tracks. The engineer would see us and get on the horn all the way through town. Great fun.

Unfortunately, with all the nanny-statedness, exposing ones self can be charged as a sex offense, which will lump you in with all the real pervs and mark you for life.

So? You don't want to see nekkid people, don't go. You don't want your kids to see nekkid people, don't let them go.

The Amtrak passenger trains have people going from point A to point B. Unless you are from that area, you probably didn't know it was an issue.

I'm having a hard time getting upset about this. It sounds like the crowd size is starting to get unmanageable and the participants are beginning to blatantly disregard the "rules" according to the moonamtrak.org website. People should be angry at the participants ruining the event for everyone else--the OC Sheriff's Dept. has been patrolling this event for many years and not shut it down before (again, according to the event website).

It didn't help the cops to ignore it that they all caused enough of a traffic jam on the freeway that it was in the news radio traffic reports all day yesterday.

That it got to 8000 people before being broken up (and TFA mentions no arrests) sounds like the police were showing decent restraint.

You know, it amazes me that adult humans can get so uptight about bits of flesh that we all know we all have (though perhaps in different sizes, shapes and colors) under our clothes.

Furthermore, the stupidity that seeing this is somehow going to scar a child for life - something that he or she is eventually going to see and/or figure out for themselves as they get older...

If there is any scarring going on, it is the continuance of this circle of shame created by indoctrination of our children into thinking that certain parts of their own bodies should be hidden from public view forever.

Don't get me wrong, there is a time and place for everything, but if the event or place is something in which a lot of (more enlightened) humans have decided that "hey, nudity here is OK" - THEN IT IS OK, OK?

Let me put it this way: the first time I was around public nudity of any sort was at my first trip to Burning Man in 2003. After about a minute, it was no longer a surprise, after 15 minutes, it was like "what's the big deal in the real world, then?", after 10 days...

Well, you realized that deoderant really was a scam, something that really only matters if you live in a society with running water and daily baths...

You're missing the point. The police looked the other way (or didn't even know) for years when people were just mooning a train. When a bunch of attention whoring asshats started to do more, they got more attention than they wanted, and the police had to shut everybody's fun down. It's just self-centered, look-at-me-everybody, attention-whoring behavior. It's not objectionable to me because of its nudity, but rather because if its immaturity and lack of consideration for others.

WiteBuddha: i never got this concept... doesn't it do more harm for kids to be taught to be shameful of their bodies?

It's not so much that. It's that from what I figure, the people that were naked or flashing were probably drunk off their arses and acting like idiots.

Mooning is harmless, good-natured fun. Flashing is a bit more in-your-face, and to some extent, its goal is to make those around you uncomfortable. When flashing ends up ruining everybody else's day, then its REALLY inconsiderate.

Naked body in a picture in a museum = good. Naked body in a nudist colony = good. Breasts of a girl flashing for beads = bad. Makes sense? I'd much rather my kid see the naked statue at the museum (or hell, even the manequins in front of Victoria's Secret) than some drunk off her arse coed attention whoring for plastic necklaces or whatever else these people were doing. The two things send completely different messages about sex regardless of how much nekkidness is involved.

/I hope that makes sense.

My family and I got mooned driving west on the MassPike a couple weekends ago by some Appalachian Trail hikers. I'm guessing some sort of hikers' tradition. And a practical one. After all that hiking I'd need some ventilation down there, too.
