Coincidentally, I try marijuana 42% of my waking hours, so...

FTFA: Researchers found that 42% of people surveyed in the United States had tried marijuana at least once, and 16% had tried cocaine. About 20% of residents surveyed in the Netherlands, by contrast, reported having tried pot

Of course, they overlook the fact that the Dutch are filthy liars.

Seriously, to come up with more than 20 people I know who have never, ever touched marijuana, I have to go back two generations. And of those original 20, most are some sort of sheltered religious fundy.

I'm 28 and I've never smoked pot. Granted, I'm a recovering southern baptist, but that's been more than a decade ago. I think I'll go have a cigarette now.

Breeder's Description - 'American Dream'
Now here's your chance to grab a piece of the good ol' American Dream.
An ideal cash cropper with white crystals frosting not only the buds, but also the stem and beginning of the leaves. This super Indica flowers in seven weeks and will keep you dreaming for hours."

In the future everyone will smoke strains of weed grown and named specifically for them. Seriously, why do we need thousands of varieties? It should all fall into dirt, good, mid, really good, or fantastic.

Pestifer 2008-07-13 03:32:43 AM
It's interesting that nobody raised the possibility that it's because we have longer working hours, shorter vacations and less job and economic security than the citizens of most other developed nations. We're self medicating.

We're number...

JericoPaladin 2008-07-13 03:33:22 AM
I know next to nobody who hasn't tried marijuana, but I live in New York City, and in the East Village no less, so my sample is probably much different than a sample representative of the US.

Polls and surveys that allow self-reporting will always be incredibly inaccurate. Maybe you could detect trends from one point in time to another, but the most you could really say is that "XX% more people were willing to say that they smoked pot in year 200Y than in year 200Z."

However, I honestly would expected the highest numbers to be in countries where marijuana use is more tolerated than in other places. It's both a legal and a cultural thing, of course.

Esn 2008-07-13 03:33:34 AM
So, if the police had done a good job, 42% of Americans should have been through jail at least once.

As a country supposedly founded on capitalist values one can only wonder why drugs are not legal in this country rather than costing us millions in a failed war on drugs it could instead be creating huge luxury tax benefits to fund military, education, and medical needs. Also the transfer of lost jobs from the drug enforcement and prison areas can be regained in other markets such as rehabilitation, production and countless other opportunities. For the love of humanity legalize it already!

On the other hand perhaps our government already grows and sells it to fund secret black projects.

Private for-profit prisons. Police departments with tons of wicked cool toys. The companies that build said wicked cool toys. Seizure of multi-million dollar mansions with no recourse. Thousands upon thousands of government employees who have to somehow justify their paychecks.

Hey, you asked.

Richard M Nixon 2008-07-13 03:49:33 AM
Never tried it. Was super-religious till college, then turned athiest and went into law enforcement. I consider it a lost oppurtunity.

Thankfully whiskey, espresso, and masturbation are all perfectly legal, government approved forms of self-anesthitization. I find if you keep them in constant rotation, then weed isn't even necessary.

Slackers.

My old roommate was a grower and was very much into the differing strains thing. I look it as analogous to being interested in wine/wine tasting. They claim each one is distinct, etc.

Not for me, though. Baked is baked.

I'm pro-pot use. I know too many pot heads who only do pot to know that it's not a farking gate way drug, you don't hallucinate, it's all natural, and some have even argued that it's less damaging that cigarettes (I'm pro smoking also). Keep in mind that I don't do pot (never even tried it) and I don't smoke either. It's your body, you should be allowed to put what ever the hell you want to into it, be allowed to decorate it with what ever tattoos you want, pierce it where ever you want, and if you want to farking cut your hand off, it's your body, do it. If the only thing that effects me is a bad smell, then so be it. I don't care. Better that than having to over hear a teenaged girl on her cell phone talking forever about complete nothingness.

Dude, you're right, man, let's go. We can do this. We just got to get a partition signed by a bunch of dudes, and I know a bunch of dudes, so let's do it. We can do this, man.

Can we stop at Taco Bell on the way? Okay, first thing tomorrow then. I'm plugging in the toaster and putting pop-tarts in it so all we have to do is push the button, so we can get an early start.

Don't eat the pop tarts now, man.

Oh, hell, man, now we got to wait till we have more pop tarts.

Oh, hey, let's get those toaster strudels, instead.

42% of Americans have tried pot.

Canada wins (new window)

The survey found that 45 per cent of Canadians have used marijuana at least once in their lifetime. About 70 per cent of those aged 18 to 24 reported using the substance.

Link is from four years ago. With all the old people dying, maybe its breached half.

mandingueiro 2008-07-13 04:10:27 AM
could it be that pot use is a manifestation of resistance to the repressive society (imbued with contradicting messages)that modern american society has created. While at the same time that same rebellion becomes another form of personal repression?

Funny. To come up with more than 20 people I know who have never, ever touched marijuana, I can just go to work. I live in a country where marijuana is something about 99.9% of the population has never seen.
