I am so glad my babycakes is not British.

Our play time would get more boring and longer(hey I'm old)

oops, sorry Britain. Please adjust as needed.

Wow, Nanny State and precious snowflakes in one headline. Don't see that too often, huh?

Oh dear god.

Read them the original brothers Grimm.

I didn't know Australia had formally rejoined the Empire.

It continues to amaze me that my parents, grandparents and all of humanity born before 1980 managed to survive and thrive even without the help of people like Emeritus Professor of Child Development at UniSA, Professor Freda Briggs helping people make their kids better.

"Don't make me get the belt" FTW

My mother use to give me legendary ass beatings with a belt. I clearly remember many of them, and what I did to warrant such a punishment.

starsrift 2008-07-13 06:23:04 AM
I wouldn't be concerned about this making a child a "nervous wreck".

I'd be worried about it killing their imagination and (therefore) fun.

But I guess that doesn't matter anymore, anyway, huh? Just need to sit the kid down in front of a Nintendo or television set and they're entertained.

Shedim 2008-07-13 06:23:51 AM
Eh, it's just South Australia. It's not like that state actually matters.

So we've exported nannystatism to Oz?

Who'd a thunk?

A note to people posting in this thread:

Fark welcomes a variety of political views. There are a lot of people here, and it seems that no two are in the same place on the political spectrum.

That said, hate speech will not be tolerated here. If you are here to indicate that you agree or disagree with everything that the person did, you are welcome to do so. If you are here to agree or disagree with the current political administration, you are also welcome to do so. If you cannot find a way to express that sentiment respectfully, please hold off posting until you can.

JerkyMeat But if you disagree with them, isnt that classified as hate speach? After all, you hold a position different from them. This position could offend them and hurt their feelings. In this day and age, are we not mature enough and enlightened enough not to offend anyone?

As I am disagreeing with you, ergo, this post is hate speech.

Zalan [TotalFark] 2008-07-13 06:42:26 AM
Oh come on, we need some natural selection in this world, if we keep the really dumb ones around, they just end up crapping in the gene pool.

In an attempt to douse the flames: What exactly should children not be learning from fairytales?

Snow-White: Girls, don't go living with 7 other guys, they'll all want to take their turn...making you do all the cooking and cleaning.
Cinderella: Don't let a guy nail you just because he bought you some nice shoes.
Sleeping Beauty: Just one little prick can ruin your whole life or perhaps 'girls who don't sleep with weaponry close to hand may get sexually assaulted in their sleep'.
Beauty and the Beast: Just say No to beastiality.
Rapunzel: If you have long hair, don't dangle it out of windows - some weirdo may climb it and sexually harass you.
Hansel and Gretal: Old people are weird, and probably paedophiles with a vore fetish.
Little Red Riding Hood: If your granny looks funny, ask somebody to kill her or see 'Beauty and the Beast'.
Rumpelstiltskin: It's ok to make fun of people with weird names.

Schlemiel 2008-07-13 06:57:12 AM
Hah, I asked my 7 year old daughter what she thought about adding safety messages after fairy tales. She just laughed and said "That's the whole point of these fairy tales! Where did you get this silly idea?"

/Looks like i'm doing alright as a parent

Impudent Domain 2008-07-13 06:58:45 AM
Well let's see, Jack was a total dipshiat for trading the cow for a pack of magic beans. Hey A-hole School idiots. Most of the fairy tales have exactly that message already in them.

/the triumph of ideology, legalism, and proceduralism over common sense. Is that the end product of democracy?

Yeah, what he said. If your snowflake is too stupid to know the difference between fantasy and reality, it's not an accident, it's not a tragedy. It's natural selection. So sorry your shortcomings are on such glaring public display that your snowflake melted herself but we can all be thankful your gene pool dries up after you.

If the nanny state wants to get involved, how about printing up some signs. "You must be this smart to stay on this ride."

/End snarky comment

well mr. pollyanna if this were an isolated incident then yes it would be an overreaction. The problem is that we see this sort of stupidity in the USA, Great Britain, and Canada on a weekly, almost daily basis. Something is horribly wrong and no one seems to be able to make it stop.

When I was about 5-6, I attended a Christian School. A portion of the day was set aside for "Bible Time," where we would memorize verses and have Biblical stories read to us. Once day, our teacher read us the story of David and Goliath. I was impressed with the story of how David took a sling and was able to kill Goliath with a single stone to the forehead. At recess, I decided to put it into practice. I took one of my socks, made it into a sling and chucked a stone at my friend Brian. Out of sheer luck, I hit him directly on the forehead. I was very proud of myself, I was just like King David. My teachers, were not so impressed, and sent me to get paddled by the principal. I was spanked later on at home by my father as well.

Next time I'll tell you all about the time they read us the story of the Crucifixion. Those were fun times.

So, yes.

I thought those fairy stories were cautionary tales. I mean, wasn't that the whole point?

Joce678 2008-07-13 08:33:56 AM
FTA: ...not to enter unknown houses like Hansel and Gretel.

Hansel and Gretel got locked in a cage for months by an old woman who wanted to fatten them up and eat them.

Does this tale need a warning message...?

If you're hungry, capturing children in a cage and fattening them up to eat them is frowned on by the police and MAY GET YOU ARRESTED.

A girl I work with has a child that she reads stories to nightly. I recently asked what she reads him. She listed off the classics. Just out of curiosity I asked a few questions about the stories. My hunch was correct, and all the stories had been neutered. The old versions of all the classics were sooo hard core. Hansel and Gretal, dad leaves the kids to starve in the forest. Little red riding hood, grandma and Red get eaten by the wolf until the woodsman cuts open his belly. Ladybug ladybug fly away home, your house is on fire your children alone. Hell jack and the beanstalk jack was a thief and a murderer. Gotta love the classics.

They were neutered even when you first heard them.

It isn't hardcore until prince charming rapes sleeping beauty to wake her up.

From what I understand, the first edition of Grimms' Fairy Tales wasn't sanitized, but even the Brothers Grimm changed the second edition to make it a more family-oriented work.

European myth and folklore is a pretty interesting area, I'd like to learn more about it.

Everybody is missing the more ineresting part of the story: body part names.

While I'm OK with he concept of using real names when talking with kids - I'm wondering why it happens so often in SA schools that the teachers need to be given directions on it.

"Good moring, Susie, vulva feeling better this morning?"

"Hi, Brian, how's that penis coming along?"

????

I'm pretty sure Anne Rice wasn't the first to write about Sleeping Beauty. Good series though.
