"There are none," he said. "It will create such an anti-U.S. feeling in Pakistan that I would say would mar the atmosphere of cooperation that exists between us."

and by cooperation, we mean when we do nothing to catch osama and no one else can help

Does he believe bin Laden is in Pakistan?

"I don't think so. I'm not sure," he said. "Nobody's aware of that. Nobody can speak with certainty. But our policy's very clear. We are allies in this war.

and by allies, we mean that we will actually do nothing to try and find and catch him

Pakistan is a very delicate situation, to put it lightly. The last thing we want is destabilization in a country that has a powerful extremist Muslim movement and nuclear weapons.

What difference does it make? The people are dead and the damage to this country has been done, mostly by our own cowardly government and its fraidy cat petitioners. What justice can possibly be brought forward?

KaponoFor3:Pakistan Iraqn is a very delicate straightforward situation, to put it lightly. The last first thing we want is destabilization in a country that has a powerful extremist Muslim movement and nuclear weapons power plants.

Ever notice the "extremist muslim movements poised to gain power if anti-American sentiment is fostered by an ill thought out invasion" thing only stops us when there's something to actually be accomplished in the country? Iraq? That's fine. Iran? Go for it. Pakistan? No wai, we might find bin Laden there! Scary stuff.

Who?

Oh, yeah. That Saudi billionaire who financed 19 Saudi terrorists to hijack 4 US planes on behalf of an Afghani terror organization in 2001, and who promptly hid out in a cave in Afghanistan; thus providing the US with an excuse to attack Iraq.

The one we've supposedly been looking for since 2001 and somehow can't manage to find...because he's probably been dead since early 2002? Yeah, I remember him. Whatever.

Well, hopefully we learned from our first expedition out there under the soon-to-be-deified Ray-guns, that the absolute worst thing we can do is to just pack up and take off. The 'paks' might (are) totally incompetent and have their own completely retarded strategic interests, but unfortunately, we're stuck with them.

Also, as a bit of trivia, who led the Pakistani government which was the only country to recognize the Talban? If you answered Benazir Bhutto, you are correct. Just goes to show that no-one in that country's leadership is anywhere close to clean. Oh, and she recognized the taliban primarily because she hoped that they would let unocal build a pipeline out to central asia.

I don't think anyone is advocating some form of invasion. What Obama suggested, for example, was more in line with search or strike teams, much as we used in Indonesia and Sudan after 9/11.

I personally don't know if it would be worthwhile for bin Laden alone (as Bill Maher put it, taking out the man would have the same effect on al Qaeda as Ray Kroc's death against McDonald's), but for the Pakistanis to essentially admit they plan on doing nothing is insane. /submitter

Maby he is by the public, and maby he has been put on the back burner by the politicians, but some of us still remember. Some of us are busting our asses to try to get to Afghanistan. Unfortunately its sort of hard to get there from here.

What sucks worse than "long forgotten" is "never been charged".
Osama bin Laden is the legend that was planted on day one.

BTW, if you haven't seen the new doco "The 9/11 Chronicles, Part One: Truth Rising", you might find it interesting.

I honestly think it's better for the West if Osama goes on without ever being captured.

The guy is at the same time a charismatic cult-leader to extremist wackjobs, while not really having any real power or control anymore.

Now imagine seeing the video on BBC & Al-Jazeera of this guy being led around by American troops in handcuffs & leg-irons, a circus of a tribunal, than being executed.

That would turn the guy into a martyr, and set off the biggest shiatstorm of Islamic Jihad Lunacy you could ever imagine.

Just let the guy cower in a cave somewhere and die from kidney failure on his own terms. We'll all be better off for it.

Um, Saudi Arabia also recognized the taliban as the official government. You know, our good pals.

GoRedSoxGo 2008-07-13 12:45:49 AM
Who cares? Not like we'd go running off to find him anyways.

ScubaDude1960:Actually, the U.S. not only recognized the Taliban, we actively assisted their rise to power.

Well, the US and Britain paid for Taliban training centers in Pakistan. But Pakistan, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia were the only ones to recognize the Taliban as the legitimate gov't of Afghanistan.

Interestingly enough, Bhutto categorically denied in '95 that Pakistan was backing the Taliban in Afghanistan.
