Not sure why that was a bad plan. As far as desperate acts go, it seemed fairly reasonable to me.

Good plan, failed at the execution. Take the cab to a different town then you live in, or at least, to the edge of the town you live in. foot it home, all ninja like.

If you take it to a different town, switch companies or call a friend for a ride.

Yeah, and if you're not white, the DA will personally see to it that someone cuts your balls off.

Something like this happened recently in my town. An idiot robbed a farm implement store, then ran next door to a car dealership. When he couldn't steal a car easily, he asked the dealership if he could use their phone to call a cab. He was arrested within 3 minutes, still in the lobby of the dealership waiting for the cab.

Couldn't he have just stolen a golf cart?

When it came near, did the license plate say FRESH? Did it have dice in the mirror?

How do you rob a whole golf course? Did he start at the clubhouse and work his way around, or did he just wait at the 18th hole and just collect the money as each foursome finished their game?

Actually, it sounds like he called the cab and got away and was caught much later after an investigation when the police manhunt failed... so the cab thing wasn't such a bad idea. Like someone said earlier, he should have went farther.

This guy gets it right, everyone else missed the boat. The guy's not a dumbass, this actually was a brilliant idea. The guy ESCAPED the police in the cab. He only got caught later on in the week when they talked to his friends/did investigation that led them to him. No one can escape from that, can't fault this suspect.

Years ago when I worked as a caddy, someone broke into the caddyshack (where members happend to store their clubs) after hours and stole a whole bunch of expensive drivers and putters. Like the high-end Taylor Made and Ping stuff. The course thought it was a caddy. Without going into the details, they made all the caddies pay for it.
