Just remember, government schools have nothing to do with education and everything to do with conforming and respecting "authority"

The good news is that she'll be able to afford a private school next year.

I'm glad I read this article. This way, I can tell my daughter that if she is ever in a situation where a school adminstration is telling her she has to submit to a strip search, she is to tell them to go fark themselves. She is then to call me, and they can deal with me about it.

kaminariko [TotalFark] 2008-07-12 09:22:15 PM
Most school administrators and about half of the teachers are idiots.

Sometimes I think about giving up.

I came here to say this. Now move along, citizen.

I don't have any kids but I can imagine i'd have a hard time not kicking someones ass if they strip searched my daughter over some farking ibuprofen.

Weaver95 [TotalFark] 2008-07-12 09:55:11 PM
Previous court decisions ruled the school did not violate the US Constitution's Fourth Amendment rights against unreasonable searches and seizures because officials have a legitimate interest in protecting students from prescription drugs.

Every last sonuvabiatch who supported that ruling should be kicked from the bench and barred from EVER holding public office again. School officals ARE NOT DOCTORS!

Premeditated_Road_Rage 2008-07-12 09:57:48 PM
I work at a school district in the next town over and, happily, knows that none of our staff would pull this type of ass-hattery.

Weaver95:School officals ARE NOT DOCTORS!

Most school districts have a valid rule that all medications, even over-the-counter ones, must be distributed by the campus nurse.

It used to be that little Johnny and Suzy could carry their Midol and Tylenol with them, but lawsuit-happy parents changed that.

Frank N Stein 2008-07-12 10:07:55 PM
If you have a problem with this, you can easily send your kid to a private school, where you can threaten to take send your kid somewhere else/not give them money anymore.

Oh wait, you can't afford private schooling? Then home school your kid.

Whats that? The government is looking to take away that option?

Frank N Stein 2008-07-12 10:12:32 PM
Seriously, though. This is why home schooling should not be legislated out of existence in this country. This story perfectly illustrates the authoritative tendencies of anything State run.

I wish it weren't that way. I wish that the government, when responsible for education, could have a clear and decisive role in just educated children on facts (whether it be science, math, language etc...). But time and time again, children are forced into this vortex of relative morals that the government sells at gun point.

Frank N Stein:But time and time again, children are forced into this vortex of relative morals that the government sells at gun point.

Education is mandatory in the United States.

How do you propose to regulate the inevitable misbehavior of children in a public setting?

How do you teach young citizens to follow the rules of society when many of the parents are not teaching morals at home?

Dufus [TotalFark] 2008-07-12 10:29:25 PM
Seemingly innocuous items can, in the hands of creative adolescents, present serious threats.

Heh... they seem to have learned what we learned to do with aluminum foil and bathroom cleaner back when I was in high school.

Seriously, I have to wonder if pictures were taken to "document the search". Not that any school officials would do anything so vile as take nude pictures of a 13 year old.

BTW, my daughter will be 3 this school year. Any school personnel pulling such a stunt around here would face much more that a lawsuit. "Going redneck on them" has connotations that such personnel have nightmares about.

So you believe that it is up to the government to teach morals? Thats like asking the fox to guard the hen house.

But I cannot answer your first question with much effect as I, frankly, do not know the ins-and-outs of home schooling. I'll take a swing at the question and say that there should be independent test, such as the ACT or SAT, taken in some sort of neutral setting at the end of each semester or year.

Dufus [TotalFark] 2008-07-12 10:32:42 PM
I just noticed... why is this being reported on the Australian Broadcasting Network rather than a US based news outlet? Way to report the news there Lou.

No, I absolutely don't, but who will at least teach the mores of society if the parents won't?

Then the parents suck and the kid will be lost, unfortunately. But I say that its better than the slow encroachment by the government. As we can clearly see, the government has a tendency for witch hunts, which is bad for the whole.

Frank N Stein:Then the parents suck and the kid will be lost, unfortunately.

I totally agree with you about the infringement of the government, but 80% of the kids in school are good. How do we protect them from the 20% that aren't without enforcing rules and teaching them morals?

There's no easy answer that will make everyone satisfied, so we simply have to please the will of the majority and take our lumps from the minority.

I understand where you're coming from, but I disagree. You have to remember that the majority was the ones who approved of slavery and Jim Crow laws at one point, much to the dismay of the minority.

This was controversial in the NINTH DISTRICT? HOLY SHIAT!! Seriously, all this BS about "activist judges" going against the will of the people has set up a system where they are more inclined to go against the Constitution. It's good that she won, but this is friggin' scary as hell.

My oldest will be three ( I have 3 under 3 right now) and I'd have to say you're spot on here. Honest to God, if either of my daughters were the victims here I'd be bullshiat. Having said that in a situation like this I'm sure my kids would say OK as long as you call my dad and ask him if it's alright with him first.

I'm just so glad that 18 y/o McDonald's employee got millions. I'm less glad the coont who tortured her got a chunk. And about the utterly ridiculous Law and Order they made it into that involved flash mobs and Robin Williams.
Worst. Episode. Ever.

As a mother of three daughters I have a problem with strip searches at any age. If I was a father of three sons I would have the same opinion. But unfortunately I don't get to make the laws.

Ok that is wrong. If I were her parent I would have gone batshiat and sued the shiat out of the school. If I couldn't win I would personally beat the shiat out of every single asshat that had anything to do with it.

Maybe I missed something, but don't you have to be a warranted officer of the state to detain/search/arrest/etc.?

mikec2003 2008-07-12 11:45:27 PM
but the sad part is, at least how i read the article, is that if she was accused of having something harder than tylenol, they would have had no problem with the strip search.

when the hell did parents stop teaching kids that they don't have to take off their clothing for anyone, no matter their "authority"

parents these days suck
government sucks even more

That was in 2003, when she was 13. She probably graduated by now.
