Just a sec... I have something in my eye.

Wow. We just had something very similar in my family, though the time lapse was a little longer. This past December, my wife's great aunt died of breast cancer. Yesterday her husband of 63 years followed. He barely left her side during her illness and just kind of wound down the last couple of months.

It's always sweet until you find VHS tape after VHS tape of mommy doing transients while daddy watched.

That's what I love about Fark, SockMonkeyHolocaust. Just when there's a tear-jerking, tender moment, somone comes along and makes me lol. You owe me a new keyboard.

It farked up that we force people to live like that until they finally expire. If we treated animals like that it would be considered cruel.

Like what? Surrounded by respectful friends and family? If you're saying euthanasia should be an option I agree but as lifelong churchgoers they don't seem like the type to have gone for that. Assuming you're talking voluntary euthanasia.

Believe it or not the Japanese version of that song managed to become a hit a few years ago sung by Hirai Ken.

true.

My parents have been married since 1940. I guarantee this will happen when one of them goes. He's 90 and she's 88 this year.

nashBridges:Sweet farking christ, that story made me tear up so I showed it to my wife. Here's what I got:

"Pussy."

I asked her what she would do if I expired before she did. Her response: "The life insurance is paid up, right?"

My wife has no heart. I may have to kill a cat in order to get her to emote with me.

Damn man. I can't believe she will not miss *something* about you. My wife would at least miss the fact that I mow the lawn.

Well, that and my legendary Johnson....

Churchill2004 [TotalFark] 2008-07-12 09:31:07 PM
This happened with my grandparents, though it was a couple of months rather than a few hours. Grandma went of Alzheimer's (thankfully very fast-onset, she was only really bad for the last few months), Grandpa followed a few months later of the various ills of old age. There were married for 60 years, since he was 17 and she was 15.

Though it wasn't all warm and fuzzy, of course. Grandma actually spent her last few months angry at Grandpa because she was convinced while she'd been in the hospital he had sold their house and taken her to a new one... that they had set up to look just like the old one to trick her.

And if there's anything she could do, it was be mad. My uncle didn't call her "Battle Axe" for nothing.

Mugato [TotalFark] 2008-07-12 09:45:43 PM
If I had Alzheimer's or incurable cancer or whatever, why the fark would I want to live out my last few months in agonizing pain or with the loss of dignity that comes with losing one's mind? It's cruel to put anyone through that.

Like I said, we don't put animals through that Hell. But we'll let a person languish away until their body mercifully gives up.

It's like that kid that Hulk Hogan's son farked up. He'll spend the next 50 years in some hospice with half of his head gone until he finally expires. What is the point of that?

One of the few ways by which the existence of a duprass becomes known is that the two members of a duprass always die within a week of each other

I actually live in Terre Haute, IN and saw the obits in our local paper the The Trib-Star other day. It made me think there was an interesting story behind that obit.
I was visiting my mom in Chambana, IL and saw this in their paper this morning.

To die of old age with those that love you surrounding you? What more could you possibly want?

There is nothing sad about this story.

Your wife and I should hang out sometime. She sounds like a cool chick.

stevarooni 2008-07-12 10:08:46 PM

Holy crow! The first lines to really get me:

But in February, health problems forced him to join her in the nursing home. They shared a room until she needed more intensive care and they moved him to another floor. Still, at least once a day he got someone to take him to her room and he sat beside her bed, calling her his pretty little lady. His pretty mommy.
*sniff*

Sigh.

My parents have been together since they were 14 and 16. Dad just turned 78 last month. Unfortunately, in March he broke his neck falling down stairs and although he IS alive, he's a quadriplegic. We are happy for each day we have left with him.
