Actually, they're the same old douchebags with a new gig.

/Let them tell you about how they don't own a TV.

OurManFlint1 [TotalFark] 2008-07-12 01:25:33 PM
Saving gas and money! Bad douchebags! Better stop that.

OurManFlint1:Saving gas and money! Bad douchebags! Better stop that.

If by not properly obeying the rules of the road (I believe it's actually illegal up here to actually turn your car off while it's rolling down the road), they cause other drivers to hit the brakes and waste energy, then yes, they're douchebags... selfish douchebags at that.

discount sushi 2008-07-12 01:38:12 PM
I'd usually agree. The guy in article is sensible about it. He changed his route and speeds up to not obstruct the flow of traffic.

OurManFlint1 [TotalFark] 2008-07-12 01:38:19 PM
Agreed. If the impede traffic they should get cock-punched. If they want to coast in the right lane? Let em. As long as they don't disrupt the flow of traffic. Certainly they are no bigger threat than the weavers, cell-heads and tailgater's

IrateShadow [TotalFark] 2008-07-12 01:43:06 PM
I got caught behind one today. farker was going 30 in the left hand lane on a 3 lane road.

OurManFlint1:Certainly they are no bigger threat than the weavers, cell-heads and tailgater's

You forgot the people that drive slowly in the far left lanes. I hate that around the DC metro area.

OTA BENGA 2008-07-12 01:44:47 PM
OlafTheBent:...they cause other drivers to hit the brakes and waste energy, then yes, they're douchebags... selfish douchebags at that.

Exactly. These people are so fixated on their own little world that they miss the bigger picture and ultimately do more harm than good. And they're douchebags.

Now this is how to save on gas:

They are the same douchebags as they were when this came up last week.

And the week before.

And the week before.

/there's a pattern here

From TFA:
For short stretches, his 2006 Honda Civic Hybrid gets as much as 90 to 100 miles per gallon.

That's funny, so does my '03 VW Passat with the V6. In fact, at some points- science calls it "coasting"- my fuel economy goes off the scale into infinity miles per gallon!

Douchebags. Sounds about right.

IrateShadow:I got caught behind one today. farker was going 30 in the left hand lane on a 3 lane road.

That's a capital crime in my state and specifically voids the accused's right to due process.

If he's drafting other cars, he's already a douchebag.

Wonder if the money saved by hypermiling is partially lost to time wasted?

Sure, i will roll down hills, ease of the accelerator approaching red lights etc, but at the same time I will do it so i can maintain a safe speed and not become an obstruction on the road etc. Have been doing it for a long time. Going down a hill? Gravity is on your side.

Spider Rico 2008-07-12 02:25:52 PM
This prick better never even touch the left lane.

Don't even think about it, fairy.

Psumek 2008-07-12 02:25:54 PM
PETA members > Hypermilers > Smokers of "American Spirit" > Hybrid Owners > people who use the word "Libtards"

/that is all

duckpoopy 2008-07-12 02:26:23 PM
Whats a hypermiler.

The Angry Hand of God 2008-07-12 02:27:09 PM
If you are going to drive like a slow irritating vagina, why dont you just get a moped? I think it is great that most of the people doing this can afford a brand new hybrid. I want to see one of these asspirates to hypermile in my 1985 Chevy Caprice.

Single White Male 2008-07-12 02:27:43 PM
I don't mind hypermilers as long as they stick to the right along with all the old people, truck drivers, illegal immigrants, and drug traffickers.

ActionJoe 2008-07-12 02:28:11 PM
This guy does not seem too bad. What is wrong about being in the right most lane traveling the speed limit? Nothing...just go around him. What is wrong with not jumping right off after stopping at a red light? Oh no you might have to wait an extra second or two. Those are just good driving practices that also happen to be good for gas mileage.

Hypermilers only get annoying if they break the law or are completely ignorant about the fact that not everyone is going to drive like them.

OutsmartBullet 2008-07-12 02:28:35 PM
So this is the guy who accelerates like a snail out a traffic light, ensuring it turns red before the caterpillar of traffic actually gets moving.

just_dis_guy 2008-07-12 02:28:54 PM
If you were from Virginia, you'd know that everyone behind the wheel of a car is a douchebag.

/there may be rare exceptions
//but it is safer to simply assume "in car" = "douchebag."
///"on bike" = "douchebag" as well.
////can't wait to win the lottery so I can quit my job and move

/Didn't you read the headline?

Pete, meet repeat.

Also, I'm sure somebody must have submitted this with a better headline.

Hypermiling has added 15 minutes to Winger's 31-mile commute between his home in James City County and Langley Air Force Base in Hampton. The 52-year-old civil servant changed his driving route to avoid the interstate and its high speeds, but he said he enjoys the drive more. It also doesn't hurt that he leaves home at 5:30 a.m. and returns before the evening rush hour traffic gets bad.

Even if you earn the minimum wage, you pay more in time than you do in petrol. Hypermiling is a sad hobby, but not a realistic way to conserve resources.

Bowen 2008-07-12 02:35:32 PM
There's nothing wrong with "driving gently" - I've gone from ~32 mpg to ~38 mpg by just driving like a better person. I'm a lot less likely to cause a major highway catastrophe too.

The problem arises with the whole "coast behind a tractor trailer with the engine turned off" thing.

AdamK 2008-07-12 02:35:48 PM
wanna know how to save on gas? travel routes that involve less stopping and going, travel less often, and keep your car maintained

/i'll be here all week
//'cuz i won't be driving

delphi_ote 2008-07-12 02:36:12 PM
Driving more reasonably to save gas is fine. Accelerating slower, driving at lower speeds, slowing down earlier for stoplights, and not turning on the A/C all seem perfectly reasonable to me. Not only will they save you fuel, they'll also save your car some serious wear and tear.

Losing touch with reality and risking your life for .01 gallons of gas is obviously not alright.

CygnusDarius [TotalFark] 2008-07-12 02:36:57 PM
I'd preffer to deal with that kind of douchebag, than with the douchebags that drive while:

A) Talking on the cellphone
B) Eating/drinking
C) All of the above

Sean_L 2008-07-12 02:37:36 PM
The tiny amount of money you save by turning off your engine at stop lights is going down the shiatter the day you have to replace your prematurely worn out starter-motor.

Ryankenny 2008-07-12 02:37:40 PM
There are enough people impeding traffic already in California without adding hypermilers.

The right lane is the new fast lane. The old fast lane is the new douchebag lane.

Mandapants 2008-07-12 02:38:06 PM
How close does a driver have to get to the car in front of him to be "drafting"?

What's the distance before you're actually buffeted by winds and it starts costing you gas?

/the more you know

jjorsett 2008-07-12 02:38:21 PM
I'll do without my A/C when they pry it from my frozen dead fingers.

TheRedMonkey 2008-07-12 02:38:28 PM
I have got caught at countless lights, being only the third or fourth car because someone can't hit the gas and get moving. If you can't afford gas then get on the bus. If you want to save gas then ride a bike or moped.

Drakin020 2008-07-12 02:39:31 PM
I hypermile.

To those that don't like it, to farking bad. Where do you need to be in such a hurry?

Randal2477 2008-07-12 02:40:07 PM
FTFA:

When he does have to journey onto I -64 between Hampton and Williamsburg, Winger stays in the right lane and maintains a safe distance from other drivers.

If a driver comes up from behind and is unable to pass, Winger speeds up. While he wants to get good mileage, Winger said he'd rather sacrifice a few miles per gallon than tick off another driver.

"I try to keep an eye on it," he said. "If I'm out there annoying people, that's not helping."

THIS guy is a decent dude. At least he's not that much of a douchenozzle that he does his thing ignorant of the rest of us.I saw a guy I can only assume was one of these "hipster" douches giving everyone the finger as we passed him doing the speed limit while he did approx. 15-20 miles under that. It was either that or this guy was just a regular douche.

Hypermile all you want out of my way.

Some of us have jobs and interests that are more important than trying to save two dollars a day. If you don't care about getting places quickly, take the farking bus. You're not the traffic police and you have no right to biatch about people driving fast, provided that they're driving safely and sanely. By contrast, being the obstinate shiathead that prioritizes a truly minimal (and often non-existent) financial savings over everyone else's time is definitely worthy of condemnation.

Hypermiling was coined by Wayne Gerdes, an Illinois resident who started trying to improve his gas mileage the day after Sept. 11, 2001.

Says it all right there.

"Oh, who gives a f*ck about some terrorists or some fallen buildings? What's really bothering me today is the cost of a full tank of gas. 99 cents a gallon, that's the REAL tragedy, hoo-boy!" (changes channel, station is replaying attack on WTC) "Crikey, those boys really are insane--what a waste of fuel!"

I have a revolutionary idea.

Leave a bit earlier rather than at the last minute. *GASP*

I KNOW IT JUST MIGHT WORK!!!!
