in radio that's called payola and it's illegal as heck.

At least it wasn't some hell-spawn-of-a-SUV-and-minivan CUV.

CUVs are just minivans without sliding doors.

If it were a test drive around the block no one would have known. he got an illegal perk, big difference.

CheetahMk2 2008-07-12 01:07:00 PM
subby, should have mentioned it was a couple week long test drive.

Before the debates start, test driving the SUV is not the controversial issue. The police chief received a free gift("extended test drive") that violated some ethics codes. It wouldn't matter if the gift was an SUV or a Prius.

BTW: is that John Timoney the same as the former Philly chief? If so, I hope he gets the harshest possible punishment for this.

And without a sliding door, minivans are just worthless.

Naturally some of us didn't understand why some people would naturally have a problem with this.

Miami Herald news partner WFOR-CBS4 reported Timoney's free SUV in August.

That was almost a YEAR ago. Does he still have it?

well at least he came up with the idea of test driving a vehicle. unlike our mayor of Detroit which used city petty cash to lease his wife a red Cadillac Escalade for the price of $24999 for 2 years. note an amount of 25000 has to be given permission for the request. I think this is when his wife found out about his cheating ways.

The resulting controversy prompted Timoney to buy the vehicle at sticker price -- $54,269.11.

Never mind.

I have no problems if police officers want to test drive a new car. Test driving a new car for a few weeks on the other hand...

well, this certainly is not news. i'm still wondering if this is fark.com.

You do understand that an improvement from, say, 10 MPG to 12 MPG has a much greater impact than from 28 MPG to 35 MPG, right?

Oh...I didn't think so.

FAIL

Pfft. Big deal. I never buy anything I haven't test driven for at least a month.

I'd like to see the math on that one. 12/10 < 35/28

Call me a tardbacon if you will, but isn't the first one an increase of 20% and the second one an increase of 25%?

Big Deal. Gary Indiana's new mayor got a new bulletproof Hummer
With two bodyguards. And he says crime in his town is exaggerated.

egarrard 2008-07-12 03:02:06 PM
Why should he worry about what he drives? It's not his gas. If he wanted to be an ordinary "pee-on", he wouldn't have joined the police.

erratick 2008-07-12 03:45:37 PM
CUV is a station wagon. They are in no way a minivan. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

Meh, all he has to do is purchase some carbon credits and The Messiah of Gaia, Lord Al Gore will forgive his sins against Mother Earth.

I take it the SUV hasn't exploded, has it?

That deal has to be the bomb.

I'd like to see the math on that one. 12/10

The math is good. If we pick a distance, say 100,000 miles, a vehicle using gas at a rate of 12 mpg will use ~1667 fewer gallons of gas than a vehicle using gas at a rate of 10 mpg. A vehicle getting 35 mpg will use ~714 fewer gallons of gas than a vehicle getting 28 mpg.

arjayct 2008-07-12 08:09:08 PM
It was a 14 month test drive, submitter. Why don't you stroll into a Lexus dealer, ask for one of those (without the benefit of a badge and four gold stars on your collar), and let us know how that goes for you?

Fair enough, but the 35 MPG car will still use less gas than the 12 MPG car.

If someone weighs 500 pounds and loses 50, that's 10%. If I weigh 200 and lose 10, that's 5%. But the 450 pound guy still has a MUCH BIGGER PROBLEM than I do.

Which is, I believe, the whole point in worrying about this stuff in the first place..
