If McCain picked up Jack Kemp as Veep, I'd almost be tempted to consider the notion of possibly looking into the idea of caring about his ticket.

But since he's gonna pick a Theocrat instead, I don't.

Obama's a Kabbalist serial divorcer from Atlantis, who has as drinking problem and is nothing but fluff?

The smear campaign is really showing desperation ;-)

The bad news for the McCain camp is that their man is encountering an "enthusiasm gap" potentially as damaging as the one that undermined Dole's '96 bid. In a nutshell, Republicans aren't excited about John McCain

When was the last time Republicans were excited? Regan? Why would you get excited about a conservative message when conservatives have dominated for a long time? In 1980, it made sense as Regan brought about a new order.

As for the comparison to Dole/Clinton. This may just reflect the epoch. Clinton could never garner a majority of the vote, and 1996 wasn't really an eventual election.

In a final grim omen for McCain and the GOP, that skyrocketing interest comes at a time when party identification is moving quickly to the Democrat's advantage

The Democrat Party has had this edge for a long time. According to Wikipedia: In 2004, it was the largest political party, with 72 million voters (42.6% of 169 million registered) claiming affiliation.

The Democrat Party doesn't have a problem with registration. It has a center-right problem. The party itself doesn't embrace liberalism on the whole. This is why the (D) after a name is indicative of little.

Would that be the Democrat Party of Thailand or Brazil? Wikipedia doesn't seem to list a Democrat Party for the USA.

lmao.

Reminds me of that 1996 snl skit with Dole, McCain and the other Republican candidates at a B&B in New Hampshire with McCain eating cereal blindfolded at the breakfast table. If anyone finds it, post a link. It's a gut splitter.

/Bob Dole, Bob Dole, Bob Dole, Bob...ZZZZZZZZZZ

Why would you get excited about a conservative message when conservatives have dominated for a long time?

McCain is no conservative (not talking the fundy stuff, just the liberty based ideals). Thats why the right couldnt give a damn about him. The man is barely a Republican.

I agree with your notion that the Democrats have a center right problem. Thats mainly where they lose/lost people to the Republicans from. If they could correct that without pissing off the trial-lawyers and enviro-donars too much, we'd be back to one-party rule in this country, with the token Republican President every now and again.

I'm surprised I keep making this mistake in light of Reagan and the whole 666/antichrist thing.

Egon: I have a radical idea. The door swings both ways, we could reverse the particle flow through the gate.
Dr. Peter Venkman: How?
Egon: [hesitates] We'll vote Obama.
Venkman: 'Scuse me Egon? You said voting Obama was bad!
Ray: Vote Obama...
Venkman: You're gonna endanger us, you're gonna endanger our client - America, who paid us in advance, before she became a dog...

TomD9938:McCain is no conservative (not talking the fundy stuff, just the liberty based ideals).

The libertarian/Goldwater Republicans are diminishing. Ron Paul is probably the closet thing to Goldwater left (at least amongst those Republicans with a high profile). This is a natural result of conservatism attempting what should not be done: becoming populist. Conservatism is supposed to a be bastion for the intellectual, financial, and philosophical elite (elite in the good sense). By appealing to populist sentiments on social issues they introduced a religious-right virus into the party.

Everyone, conservative or not, should read The Conscious of a Conservative.

American conservatives are a confusing bunch. I have only met a couple that have ever read Burke or Kirk. That is on par with being a Christian but not being familiar with the New Testament. This has led to problems such as Ann Coulter and Rush Limbaugh being seen as defining conservative figures.

McCain is a Republican like Bush is a Republican.

rynthetyn 2008-07-12 05:08:44 PM
The difference between McCain and Dole is that the rank and file Republicans actually kind of liked Dole. Not enough to get enthusiastic about his candidacy, mind you, but they liked him in that bland sort of way. McCain? They don't like him.
