Well, if the woman who was ticketed says she felt dizzy and pulled over perfectly into an illegal parking spot where she subsequently passed out in the driver's seat and then regained consciousness shortly afterwards with no apparent ill effects or other evidence to confirm it, it must be true.

StoneyBologna 2008-07-12 12:28:18 PM
This person should be given a DWI, because driving after a drink is nearly impossible and one of the worst things a person can ever do. Law enforcement should make this the #1 priority. Get all these evil, wretched, sub-human lifeforms off the road and in a jail cell where they belong.

"Hannah Thomas, 25,..."

There's her first lie right there.

lurched 2008-07-12 12:30:50 PM
She phoned Merton Council and was told parking attendants were not allowed to speak to drivers unless spoken to and that she would have to pay the fine.

That is absurd. So if the meter maid sees someone slumped over in the car, they can ticket them, but can't knock on the window to see if the person is ok, or call for medical assistance?

You have clearly never experienced Parking Enforcement Officers.

In other news, many if not most government employees are unionized.

rip up the ticket and take away her license. no need to let someone with fainting spells be a killing machine on the roads.

£50 parking fine? You English farkers are doing it wrong. Consult 1776 for how to treat your civil masters.

Hahaha. Even after shiat like this we still have that moronic 30% out there who still believe the police care about us and that it's their job to "protect" us. LOL.

The police have two jobs, and TWO JOBS ONLY: To arrest you, and if they can't find a reason to do that, to take your money. That's it. Period. End of freaking paragraph.

How do we know she was "slumped over the wheel?" She probably looked asleep, and as far as I know, sleeping in an No Parking zone is still illegal.

article doesn't say why she fainted.
could be flu, could be hypoglycemia, could be any number of things.

Amazing how nobody called for medical assistance. I certainly would've knocked on the window to see if she was just asleep or if there was something wrong.

CygnusDarius [TotalFark] 2008-07-12 12:48:42 PM

Zalan [TotalFark] 2008-07-12 12:50:39 PM
In most of the places I've lived, if someone is sitting in the car, then the car isn't officially 'parked' and can not be ticketed for a parking violation.

How obvious was it that she was unconscious. I've slept in a parked car before, and it's more comfortable for me to lie on the wheel than it is to lie back. I hate sleeping on my back.

Knocking on a window to ensure the driver is okay is not "speaking to a driver".

Very true. But in some small minds, 'no speaking' could be extrapolated to 'no interaction unless the driver starts it'.

And I doubt that particular scenario had been addressed in their 'training'.

He said "knock on the window", not "engage the person in conversation". Besides, emergencies override the rules.

whoa whoa whoa whoa... Farkers, this is not my Batman glass.

Just so I have it clear, does this also mean that anytime there is a multi-vehicle collision, all the victims are automatically ticketed for illegal parking as they are clearly smashed-up and immobile in no-parking zones?

Why, yes, yes, it DOES mean that. £50 tickets for all!

/what if a driver is mute and is communicating via hand signals?
//does not count as "not speaking to" the meter maid?

She should've been given a ticket for having her steering column on the wrong side of the car...

Yes, you would have, but then you'd be a bad meter maid. Meter maids are supposed to bring in revenue for the state. They're not getting paid to treat people with dignity or respect.

Besides, the state needs that 50 quid to spend on useless programs like welfare or surveillance cameras to track our every move. Expansive, freedom-crushing centralized states aren't free.

Anyone ever see that parking wars show on A&E?

Usually shows like it humanize the people and show that they are just doing their job, etc.

This show has taught me that these people are the devil's spawn incarnate.

I saw one episode where the guys were driving around looking for out of state plates. Why? Because they are far more likely to make a mistake or be ignorant of local laws.

The kicker for me was that these guys don't get anything for writing all of these tickets. If you got 10% of the fine as a kickback, I could understand targeting people. But they seem to do it for the sheer joy of being douches. They get giddy over dishing out huge fines simply because they hurt others.

I've never even received a parking ticket before, but I can't watch the show without getting an urge to run a meter maid over with my car as a public service.

BTW, this story is nothing. Wasn't there one in England as well about a guy who had a heart attack and while the paramedics were attending to him in the car a meter maid walked over and gave him a ticket? Or something like that.

Basically they should all DIAF.

I live in Philly and I cannot tell you how many parking tickets I have received. I think that the names of everybody involved with the PPA (Philadelphia Parking Authority) Should have there full addresses, license plate numbers, and all of their other personal information made public so I too can wait outside their cars and write tickets.

My feelings exactly. It says that the parking enforcement person can't talk to the person they're ticketing, but I would think common sense would allow them to call for help if the person was unconcious. The driver might have been a diabetic, had a stroke or many other things that can cause unconciousness & might need medical intervention.

All those saying "oh my god no one called for help!" Do you know how many drunks try and sleep it off behind the wheel? A cop would wake em up and have em call a ride generally or get em hauled to the drunk tank depending on how much their stumbling and their mood, a meter maid doesn't have that option.

PsychoLaurie 2008-07-12 05:01:51 PM

wildcardjack 2008-07-12 05:12:42 PM
Ya know, if it had been someone other than a meter maid they'd have been charged with failure to render aid. We had a man spotted asleep in his car in the parking lot here and three cop cars showed up and they made damn sure he was alright.

Just goes back to cops protecting their own, including the ones even the cops don't really like.

Drunk or fainting aside, the metermaid is an incompetent fool who should be fired. but being civil 'servants' incompetency and laziness doesn't matter, they still get to 'work', can't be fired.
