Yeah just what I needed, another reminder that I'm one day closer to the grave.

Christ. Peter Murphys first solo album was one of the first CD's I bought. That was a long time ago.

I was just looking through my vinyl the other day and found old Bauhaus. Damn I feel old now.

You declared victory too soon, young padawan. You've got to stretch it out and build slowly. You can't just haul the first fish into the boat and head for the dock. You've got to keep trolling till you limit out.

Bela was released in 79. I still have this single on colored vinyl somewhere

Anyone has info on this video? I had never seen this before until today and its, IMHO , much much better than the "official" bela legosi video I always knew (new window)

Even if I get called a "mary" fresh out of the gate? Isn't that like catchin' a 40lb catfish right when you drop the line?

Either way, I still have much to learn.

Saw them open for NIN a few years back, and Pete was still in full glampire mode. Looked like he was having an absolute blast, and they put on a hell of a show. Too bad everything imploded when they got into the studio again.

While I wasn't crazy about their new album, the dude still has some wicked pipes. Second best voice in the biz, next to Bowie.

Saw him about 10 yrs ago in a small venue.
They played almost everything off Deep & a batload of other stuff.

I know this is gonna be blasphemous to lots of people, but I always thought their Ziggy Stardust cover was better than the original Bowie version.

To reduce the life and cinematic legacy of Bela Lugosi to a quip such as the one above is a grave injustice.

I agree on both counts too... might have to do i heard theirs first. But I can take your blasphemy much higher. I prefer Frankie Goes to Hollywood's version of "Born to Run" better than the Springsteen version. so there......

I even like their version of "third Uncle" better than Eno's, but this one, not by so much though

It has to do with the fact that you get acustomed to a "harder" version and then hear the actual version which sounds a little limper in comparison with time, i suppose

Their cover is what got me into some of the Eno stuff, before that the only album of his I had was Music for Airports.

You too? It sounds more alien and creepy when Bauhaus is singing it which is fitting for the lyrics.

And I worship at the altar of Bowie.

QUIZBOY: Okay, there are three reasons why you will NOT score with her..One, you're gay, Two, you're an albino, and Three, you're gay...

WHITE: Watch and learn...(to TRIANA)...Ya know, I was the first DJ to play Bauhaus when I was in college....

TRIANA: Great, so that makes you what...50?

"Deep" was Peter's high point. The rest isn't bad, but Deep was the best album he put out.

"Teach him to be happy
Teach him some control
Teach him what his friends are
This is the moment of fear"

Thanks, Peter...live long

Bauhaus were just ok. Solo he was again, just ok. I don't get why people think he is some great prophet. When I listen to Bauhas I think "ok, kinda boring, nothing too special". When I listen to Skinny Puppy I think "Holy shiat, they were doing this in the mid-80s?"

craigdamage 2008-07-12 10:30:07 AM
Bauhaus were just ok

I guess "OK" means being an artist that originally creates an entire genre of music. BAUHAUS innovated a sound and theme in music that is still duplicated today. Daniel Ash's guitar style alone has had a profound impact on how the electric guitar is used in composition.

Nobody played bass like David J. Haskin's rhythms could be dark and menacing but also sometimes downright funky.

In 1980 there was no band as truly original as BAUHAUS.

I saw him perform last night, on his birthday, here in austin. He's still on his game, sounded great and had a solid back up band. I highly recommend seeing him if you get the chance.

HappyHarryHardOn: "Anyone has info on this video?"

I believe it's from the DVD "Archive" of Bauhuas performing at the Old Vic in 1982. Good video.

Saw them in '84 and '99. Great live band. Followed Daniel Ashe's Love and Rockets more than Murphy's solo stuff, but still good none the less.

The Passion of Lovers. Their best song in my opinion.

I prefer Love & Rockets to Bauhaus. After all, David J and Daniel Ash wrote all the great music anyway. Of course, I still prefer Skinny Puppy over both. My profile pic proves my alliances.

/Not an AW. it's just a prime opportunity to prove my point.

I saw Peter Murphy in Norfolk, VA in '94 or '95. He'd just released Cascade and the local lite alternative station had one the songs from that album in circulation, so they put together a ticket (I'm assuming they were the ones to blame) reflecting their demographics. Opening for Murphy was a then-relatively unknown Jewel(??), the concert was being held in Harbor Park, the local minor league baseball field(???), and after the show, there was a Norfolk Tides baseball game(?!??!!?)

Suffice to say, it was probably the most bizarre crowd I've ever been in: people dressed head-to-toe in black despite the 90° weather to my left and rednecks and bikini-clad bimbettes to my right, vapid yuppies-in-training sprinkled throughout...when I described it to a friend later, he started singing "I'd like to buy the world a Coke."

The stage was set up on the pitcher's mound, pretty much nullifying any interaction between performer and audience. Finally about 40 minutes into the set, Murphy said, "Here's a song you probably all know," went into "Cuts You Up," and then he and his band BOLTED. We later found out he was supposed to have played 80 or 90 minutes. The local station was furious, pulled all of his songs out of rotation, and more than one DJ would go out of his way to make a snide remark about Murphy for the next month or so.

Personally, I gained new respect for the man after that debacle.
