Not to defend him, but there's something absurd about the Chairman of the Ways and Means committee's big scam only netting him $30k a year. What's that, one day worth of Cheney's Halliburton stock options?

Fabric_Man 2008-07-11 07:34:14 PM
Neither do I, but then I don't live in a market with absurd rental prices. $1,000 a month for a damn apartment?!

discount sushi 2008-07-11 07:43:21 PM
Damn, I couldn't find an apartment without mice, or a crackhead neighbor in NE DC for less then $1250.

He's getting a hell of deal, but why four apartments?

jgbrowning 2008-07-11 07:45:12 PM
He shouldn't be getting any rent controls.

It's New York. You do what you can, grab what you can, and exploit all the rent-stabilization loopholes you can. He's lived in Harlem all his life, back when it was shiatty and now when it's unaffordable for most. It's a little crass to put four units together, but so is conking your hair in 2008.

OH NOEZ, A CONGRESSMAN LIVES IN A BIG PLACE AND PAYS LESS THAN ANOTHER RICH PERSON WOULD FOR THE SAME PLACE!

You can do the 'Oh, noes!' thing with anything in an attempt to trivialize it. Whatever. That's normal.

This actually is an issue, though. It's a variation of the classic Welfare Queen scenario that liberals are famous for. It pisses people off, big time.

But how does this exemplify liberal hate, hellbent?

No, it's more like a bribe. The landlords are trying to evict regular rent-control tenants, while using rent control as a loophole to make it look ok that they're giving their friend a huge discount. He's not scamming his landlord, the landlord is in on it.

What they are really glossing over is the fact that he uses one of those apartments as an office, which is very illegal, and he knows it. That is why the bullshiat about the Murphy bed. He knows he is scamming, and he tried to put a thin legal fiction over it with that.

This is a pretty quiet thread. I wonder what it would look like if this guy wasn't a Democrat from New York City, but was say oh, John McCain?

I have a feeling that this thread would be 200 posts long with people demanding he be arrested.

But he's a Democrat. That means he is ethical. Remember what Nance said? This is the Most Ethical Congress Evar. They'd never break the rules to get an unfair advantage. Because Democrats have ethics. Its what Democrats crave.

HA HA.

This is too LOW? People in flyover country laugh at your elitism. You can BUY 10 acres and a 2000 sqft brick home for 600 a month in the sticks.

The city/urban divide in this country is stark, and from our perspective, insane.

1000 bucks for an apartment!?

I'm paying almost $1,000/month for a mediocre one bedroom in the suburbs around Baltimore. What the hell?

I am surprised that Rangel is only worth up to $1.2 million, however. But he's probably got some sort of loopholes and what not, so who knows.

Cities are wonderful things, aren't they?

/I pay $900 for 425sqft!
//moving shortly, though - getting more for less :)

On the other hand, with the exception of a few cities, all of the good jobs, cultural centers, and young single life is in the big coastal states.

Hey now, let's not underestimate the all-consuming funtime activity that is 4H.

A former House Chairman of Ways and Means was busted for stealing stamps. Dan Rostenkowski lost his job and did a little over a year of jail time for an amout that may very well have been less.

On the other hand, us stick folk sure do enjoy visiting and actually taking part in the lifestyle you just described from time to time. Sharing a one-bedroom apartment with four other people for that "young single life", not so much.

As someone who's run an apartment complex... this.

//We actually weren't on the affordable housing thingy
//Nonprofit, actually
//Still evil. Ironic, given that we were owned by a church.

So while I was paying $1800 for a closet in Spanish Harlem, a rich politician was living on the cheap? Sounds about right.

Every one is shocked he only pay $1k a month per apartment but just a few weeks ago people couldnt understand that $250k wasnt filthy rich, around metro atlanta $1k could get you a nice apartment. In boston and a few other major cities, not so much.

$1,000 a month for apartment? I'm paying almost $1,300 and I was able to get a great deal in Arlington, I have friends paying $1,600 for a 1 bedroom. Woohoo DC area!

SECONDED!!! I find it absolutely hilarious that anytime anything comes out about a Democratic politician the newspapers just call him "Representative" or "Congressman", but when it's a Republican the first line of the article is "Republican Congressman guilty of..."

/I'm very moderate
//hates blatant bias
///if you don't see the bias, you're an idiot
