Thinking about Carol McCain leads me to a question that's been in my head for a while. After her wreck, supposedly Ross Perot paid for her medical bills. Were military wives not covered back then? Or was the coverage crap? Anyone who was in the service during 'Nam have any insight, here? He was an LCDR by then. Were they screwing over officers' families then, too?

I know McCain himself has had government-sponsored health care his entire life (and thus has never worried about being denied coverage or rate increases). It would be interesting what he thinks about government health care, benefits to soldiers' families, and the like, in regard to that situation.

What it all comes down to is: how much detail did McCain have to give on his wedding certificate application?

Here's a PDF link to a Marriage License Application I found online. You'll notice a few spaces to list "Number of Previous Marriages/SRDP (State Registered Domestic Partners, which would not have applied in John's case)", a space to put how the last marriage ended, and what date that happened.

Here's the question: this is a California form... how were things in Arizona in 1980? This page says you don't need to show a divorce certificate to prove your divorces in the State now, but was that the case then? And you may not have needed to prove the divorce, but you do need to be divorced to get remarried. The bit where State law says "you can marry immediately after receiving your license" didn't apply to John Boy when he picked up that paper.

One thing we DO know is: marriage and divorce records in Arizona are available from the County Court in the county where the event occurred. So if we have any budding reporters out there, here's a list of the county clerk contact information for the State. Ask at the correct location for a copy.

There are cited sources on McCain's wiki page to show that his ex-wife "accepted a divorce in February of 1980, effective in April of 1980." A simple look at his application would show if this is an issue or not.

Although McCain suggested in his autobiography that months passed between his divorce and remarriage, the divorce was granted April 2, 1980, and he wed Hensley in a private ceremony five weeks later. McCain obtained an Arizona marriage license on March 6, 1980, while still legally married to his first wife.

I haven't been paying much attention to the divorce stuff - and I honestly don't care about it THAT much, which is why I left it out of that list of statements. That might be hypocritical of me, but I don't see a marriage as fair game (except for extraordinary circumstances - if he was a wifebeater, etc) just because the media and the public has no real ability to accurately analyze what happens between a couple in a marriage.

The other stuff (the cavalier joking about killing Iranians, etc) is what really scares me.
