It's really rather incredible. McCain only got the nomination through a combination of indies who remembered him from 2000, and what conservatives he was able to pull in with his pandering. But now he's just set himself up for a general election where he's pissed both his base and the middle off.

Non-news at its best. A few dozen denizens of the non-relevant corners of the internet don't like John McCain. Oh noes.

Oh, and just for fun, here's their "favorites" list:

20) John Thune (6)
16) Mark Sanford (7)
16) Mitch McConnell (7)
16) John Cornyn (7)
16) John McCain (7)
12) John Shadegg (8)
12) Jon Kyl (8)

I think it's a testament to the MSM and conservative media that McCain could even be in the running seeing as how 80% of us want change. 75% of us want out of Iraq. almost everyone thinks we're headed in the wrong direction. and here an old doddering flip flopper who makes more gaffes in a week than Obama has his entire career is treated as though he's the best thing since sliced bread by the MSM and Obama is harrassed daily over supposed and manufactured slights.

Desterion 2008-07-11 07:05:31 AM
He's not liked by the extreme right. Just like the daily kos hates moderates.

GhostFish 2008-07-11 07:11:55 AM
Too bad that it doesn't matter if conservatives like him or not.

Almost none of them are going to vote for Obama, and the rest aren't going to sit back and not vote against Obama.

Come November, they'll hold their noses and vote McCain.

It's fun to pretend that the GOP is in absolutely terrible shape and all, but let's get real. The election is once again going to be extremely close.

Prospero424 [TotalFark] 2008-07-11 07:17:03 AM
Meh, it's not as big of deal as it could be. Political blogs for the Republicans are less crucial to a candidate's success than they are for the left (in general).

Institutions like the Heritage Foundation, the National Review, the Wall Street Journal editorial page, and the American Enterprise Institute (among others) are far more important for a Republican Presidential candidate, and while many individuals at these places may have problems with McCain, the organizations they work for are mostly far too disciplined (compared to bloggers, at least) to go "off message" and attack McCain on their front pages or in their media appearances during the most crucial months of an election year.

And that's what it comes down to for the right-wing propaganda machine: discipline, discipline, discipline.

This should piss off any concerned libertarian to no end...

This wouldn't surprise me in the least. I mean, Romney is disliked by the fundies because of his cult, but McCain isn't exactly their darling either. It wouldn't be too much of a stretch for McCain to be stricken with some convenient debilitating illness right before the convention now would it.

yeegrek 2008-07-11 07:33:46 AM
But McCain will (somehow with a Dem Senate) appoint Scalia clones, so they'll vote for him anyway. Dems fall in love, Republicans fall in line.

way south 2008-07-11 07:49:15 AM
I'd say its fairly obvious why no one on the internet likes him. Its demographic is chocked full of young people just waking up to the career of a man who's been in politics for decades.
To other voters this is all old hat. His primary opponents failed to point out anything we didn't already know and accept as part of his baggage. He ran on his parties middle ground and won its consensus vote... strange how that happens.

Compare that record with one from a fresh faced senator who has lots of interesting ideas but little history for making them happen, and you've got a train wreck in November to look forward to.

/Bush's 25% plus 25% of people who don't want Obama = 50%

The fact that Bush is anywhere in the top 50 of "Most liked Republicans" proves that these people are farking morons. It has to. What other proof do you need?

Compare that to how the average conservative feels about W, and you begin to see exactly what kinds of problems the American right faces.

We had a good thing with Clinton. Party president, first black president, etc. We wanted another guy like that who we could relate to. Al Gore is the guy who wanders around the party going "You're really drinking that? Have you read the ingredients to it?" Dubya was doing Keg Stands.

You're right, they're idiots. But I think we've seen "Whoa. Hold on. We can't have a guy who's just great at parties."

I'll be honest, I don't think Romney's religion would be a huge detriment at all. Durring the Primaries it was the Tv Media and Major Newspapers making a big deal out of it; the Blogs mainly made fun of them for it iirc.
I'm sure at this point even the Fundies would be happy to see a little bit more 'Conservative' in the Republican Ticket.

OK: Quick informal poll--

How many McCain bumper stickers would you say you have seen? (rough estimate).

How many Obama?

For me, it is 1:1,000, at least.

I have, to this day, seen only a single McCain bumper sticker. And not a single lawn sign or other indicator that a particular individual supports the man.
