it's pretty undeniable. the only funny thing is that this is the nation that's causing mccain and lieberman to pee their pants in cowardice. they can't even do a reasonably good job of covering up their failures, and we're supposed to be afraid that they will cause America to cease to exist.

Well, that answers my question in another related thread: why'd they bother? I thought they might be going for impact (ooooo...it's four missles!).

It's still a provocative act. But glad to see it's replete with fail.

So basically, three out of four missiles launched...

I'm no photshop expert (Illustrator is where it's at for me), but I would think it would have been better to just crop out the dud missile, no?

Again, not an expert, so I try to keep any photoshop edits as simple as possible when I'm using it.

Meh, every government creates 'composition' photos to put themselves in a better light. However, my concern would be that people use these PR gaffes to downplay the effectiveness of the Iranian Shahab-3s. These aren't poorly modified SS-1B SCUD (al-Hussein) missiles that Iraq had 20 years ago.

Actually, this photo was used two years ago and has been reused. It's not clear if this was even meant to portray recent test launches, though it is brutally obvious that Iran's so called capabilities are nowhere near what they report. Their homemade ramjet missiles, the sunburns, for examples, almost certainly are not as advertised.

They are the bad guys, and we cannot permit them to nuke Israel for obvious reasons (if it's not obvious to you, go read some books), but they are largely weaker than the press is indicating.

An air campaign with no occupation that set them back a mere 5 years on nukes and missiles is a good idea if we can secure Hormuz (too bad we can't).

Very interesting. Had the Iranians truly meant to wipe Israel off the map, there would be no need to photoshop stuff that was meant strictly for testing.

But instead, they distribute doctored photos. What would the purpose of that be except to deter other nations from attacking them? If Iran had ever planned to wipe out the western hemisphere, why would they care what other people think?

It's pretty incredible how out-of-touch a theocratically-controlled government that cuts-off its people from the rest of the outside world can get, and how stupid they come to believe everyone outside of their culture must be.

I mean, it's like they didn't even try. You have four missiles and two of them are mirror images - it's not that $@%! difficult to spot the fake.

Of course, no one inside Iran's borders will ever hear about this.

I agreed with everything you said up until you said we could not secure Hormuz. That is nonsense. You think those speed boats with explosives will get anywhere NEAR a US ship? They don't just have nerf rockets and shiat on those things. Also, the fact that we have a farkton of Navy ships, and they aren't really warring right now for the most part (at least not against other ships)

Actually, that's faulty logic.

Even the *BEST* weapons systems have less than a 100% success rate.

A historical example would be the US Mark XXIV FIDO. It was a WWII air-dropped homing torpedo for use against German U-boats. They only had about a 25% "Hit" rate (ie., the torpedo actually damaged or destroyed the target), and a "kill" rate of about 18%.

They were still devastatingly effective against their intended targets, and much more effective than air-dropped depth charges on a per-shot basis.

Likewise, if you have a missile that is only 75% effective, you just make enough to account for the expected failures.

The other problem is, of course, that this one picture isn't an adequate sample. It's like judging NASA's overall performance based on a five year span: If those 5 years happen to include the Challenger or Columbia disasters, you'll get a skewed result.

Isn't the reason why Russia and the USA have many more missles than necessary to destroy each other is that you can't test fire a nuclear missle after its assembled so they have more to account for the ones the muck up and end up off targhet or blowing up on lift off?

Which means that Canadians should be really upset as there will probably be a line of failed nuclear missles dropping from either Russia or the USA if war ever broke out.

That, and if the accuracy of your delivery system isn't so hot, or if the target is large and spread out (rail exhange for example)

so instead of nuking some bunker with one nuke it takes three, cause one might miss and the other might dud out. sucks for the airbase if all 3 work though, but that's probablility for ya.

Bendal 2008-07-10 01:08:30 PM
Yeah, the accuracy rating (called a CEP- Circular Error Probable) for most ICBM's was more than a half mile, and for hardened targets that meant you had a 50% chance of not killing it with just one warhead.

So you sent two. But wait!

Missiles also tended to have about a 50% failure rate, especially the older ones. So, to account for THAT, you'd need to send FOUR at each hardened target, to make sure that one of them would work and still reach the target and get close enough to kill it.

The Soviets tried to fix that problem by just making bigger and bigger missiles with more and more (and larger) warheads on them, and send LOTS of them at each target. The US went with more accurate (but smaller) weapons, so the accuracy radius got so small that one warhead/target was almost enough to insure a kill. They still would have sent more than one at each target too, though, just to be sure.

/Glad we never tested them for real
//Nuclear war would suck for everyone

shower_in_my_socks:It's pretty incredible how out-of-touch a theocratically-controlled government that cuts-off its people from the rest of the outside world can get, and how stupid they come to believe everyone outside of their culture must be.

I mean, it's like they didn't even try. You have four missiles and two of them are mirror images - it's not that $@%! difficult to spot the fake.

Of course, no one inside Iran's borders will ever hear about this.

You'd be surprised, the Iranians are pretty onto the regime's bullshiat. I was reading on Iranian's blog about the anti-U.S. protests conducted there. He or she pointed out, in a collection of different pictures from different protests against the US and UK, that the protesters are all the same people. Basically paid actors. I wouldn't have realized this if it weren't for somebody in Iran figuring it out and exposing it.

Plus they are VERY savvy in getting around the firewalls and filters there. The average Iranian knows more about proxies than does your average computer science student in the U.S.

"The country often blames the accidents on U.S. sanctions barring American companies from selling to Iran. Its airlines have tried to upgrade their fleet by buying European aircraft but have been turned down amid U.S. pressure on Europe not to sell.

However, it does not have similar difficulty buying parts for its Russian planes. Iranian airlines have bought Russian craft in recent years, but usually secondhand ones to save money."

Is there any Iranian domestic aviation manufacturing capability aside from their ability to bolt on an extra vertical stabilizer to a 40 year old Tigershark? It seems pretty laughable that they'd have the technology to build nukes and missiles if they can't even machine some parts for 30 year airliners.

It would be laughable if their civilians didn't die as a result of it. They claim indigenous capabilities in aviation and military equipment, but at best it's some poorly reverse-engineered outdated model, and at best it's some overpriced, outdated model they bought from a slimy country like Russia or China.

guy I used to work for was from Iran... if clients pulled up in trucks (read:rednecks) or SUVs (read:soccer moms)... it was Persia (and they would alway ask) ~
if they gave the impression of any other generalization... the question was rarely asked unless the client was wanting to show off having traveled and would ask about specific areas ~ in which case the answer was usually Iran...

now his nephew otoh... always used Persia & Persian (& made not-so-subtle references to hidden pleasures passed down thru the ages) was never ever lacking attention from females of any age...

/didn't hurt he was extremely hot...

I don't know how many airlines they have but Iran Air has mostly Airbuses and Fokkers.

I dunno about that. It may not be the worst 'shop attempt but it's pretty bad. There's even a visible halo of chopped sky around the 'shopped missile.

PeeOnYou:According to Iran it was the US that was shopping the pics, not them. I would agree. The US news is notorious for shiatty shops.

Give me a break. Why would "we" photoshop them? And I quoted "we" because we have a free press, where theirs is state-controlled. They don't understand that, and apparently neither do you.

Well that's why we have fark, right? In all seriousness, if somebody is interested enough in a topic to have an opinion, they won't have to go too far to understand some basic facts.

/I hope.

Persepolis:re-elect_jimmy_carter:you'd know that persians dont refer to their country as "iran"

Actually, we do.

It's pronounced EE-ron. The people refer to themselves as EE-roon-ee.

Persia and Persian are all terms for the west. Specifically the Greeks. It's been called EE-ron since Cyrus the Great.

Maybe I'm blind, but I only see two unique missiles in that picture. Two. Not three and definitely not four.

So, everyone's mocking them for covering one dud from the original picture. I guess the fact that three missiles are actually, y'know, launching doesn't merit any attention.

Funny, the more you know about the country and the people, the more ironic it seems. A culture of contradictions.

As was well pointed out in Persepolis, [the books not the farker] people who are worried if their hair is showing, or their socks are too bright have less time to worry about what the heck happened to their freedom of speech.

Also, judging by those pictures, they aren't doing a good job of enforcing the strict dress - unless that was your point. Those look a lot looser than what what they were allowed to wear in the 80's.

odd that everyone ive talked to from ee-ron (lots here in berlin) has called it persia.

That's because you're talking to the Iranian equivalent of a Miami Beach Cuban.

It was meant to be partly ironic. It's fascinating how those girls can take the dress code mandated, and make it as equally attractive and provocative as anything you'd see on Miami Beach. My hat is off to them. You cannot effectively mandate the natural desires or vanity of anybody.

The fact that only one screwed up is something to be MORE concerned about rather than the fact that they can't photoshop a dud out.

For the situation over there, I think this is far more about showing the Israelis that they can shoot things, in response to the "exercise" they flew last week, and almost nothing about the US in particular
