Give me the Guess Who. They got the courage to be drunken buffoons, which makes them poetic.

The collection has been kept for the most part in a storage facility, except for a few that Bachman regularly used in the studio (he also has Fender and Gibson guitars in his "guitarsenal," as he calls it).

Guitarsenal would be an awesome band name.

And I'd go see this museum.

carmody 2008-07-08 11:44:37 AM
Finally those guitars won't be forced to play any more BTO.

Gretsch guitars are farking beautiful...what's with the hate? I mean, I play a Les Paul as my main axe, but I adore those kickass Country Gentleman models and the like.

If it's good enough for Chet Atkins, it's sure as hell good enough for your Farker ass.

Sorry your pointy 80s shred machine isn't worth much any more.

I wouldn't go that far, but I would love to have a 6129 silver jet. None of that humbucker nonsense.

I don't get all the guitar hate at all. I have a Strat and a '69 Rickenbacker. Used to own a Gibson 335 (twelve string). Thanks to an axe-collecting brother-in-law, I've played about everything. Other than the Steinberger feeling weird, they all were incredible.

Because it's much harder to get decent twang out of a Gibson.

Of course, with the audio shaping that one can do nowadays, you could get twang out of anything. Given that I can't afford my dream guitar and amp, I make do that way.

/besides, humbuckers suck, that's why you don't get a gibson.
//the designated hitter ruined baseball too, as long as I'm being a curmudgeon.
///not good enough to afford anything other than my Eastwood Vox clone.

Oh I'm guilty of that too, at times. But damn...anything that's not a Hondo or a Lotus is a good guitar!

Personally I'm a Rickenbacker man, but a Duo-Jet could easily find a place in the stable. Hell, I'll take just about any guitar or bass offered...

Except for a B.C. Rich...sounds alright, looks fu*king hideous.

the gretsch 6120 is the one townshend used on 'who's next' and 'who are you' as well as the eric clapton 'rainbow' concert ... joe walsh gave it to him (with a fuzzface and a fender amp) ... townshend said he'd use it live more often but it doesn't stay in tune well enough

the 6120 is on my wishlist big time ... great sound ... i'd settle for a white falcon tho ;)

productiveslacker 2008-07-08 02:50:39 PM
Two weeks ago, Bachman finalized a deal to sell the collection to Gretsch and have it displayed at the company's headquarters in Savannah, Ga. The collection - ranging from a 1928 model to the latest prototypes - arrived in Savannah on Canada Day.

Yeah! It's Canada Day in Savannah Georgia USA! Today only, it's a Canada Day! 20% off everything in the store!!!

Gretsch quality varied tremendously from instrument to instrument. I have a 63 Tennessean I wouldn't trade for the world, but I've played White Falcons that were complete POS. A good 6120 is a work of art, however.

I met Chet Atkins once (also Leo Kottke at the same time) backstage after a concert in San Diego, truly a class act.

Amen, although you could really say the same thing about most guitar manufacturers.

Wow, no kidding. I listened to that album not long ago and was amazed at the sound. It's really a forgotten wonder.

Jedekai 2008-07-08 05:00:25 PM
Gretsch? Awful sustain and tone. Trying to tune one to anything that isn't a standard makes it lose so much top AND bottom end it's not funny.

Best sounding guitars right now? Martin Dreadnoughts (if you can afford 4K for an acoustic) and...

B. Farking C. Rich. Bar none. Not the NJ series, either. I personally love my KKV more than any other I've owned. Tune it to Drop D, WAAAYYY high B or any damn thing you want - it'll hold it like no other.

/Love the design - makes parents nervous and girls say "cool".
//Remember: If you are a white male and want the ladies: learn to play guitar. And not a Wretch or a Render. Gibson/Martin... ANYTHING but those two.

Bought one of these for my 35th... took almost a year to get it. Unbelievable and my wife will not let me look at another guitar.

Dang, Chet and Leo, I'm jealous and I rarely am.

Have a Sebring (clone of a Gibson L4) which is great, except the pickup hole constantly gets lose; a Martin D-35 which is great, but old and really hard to play until I get the neck redone (again) and a Fender Squire. Oddly, mostly these days I'm playing the Squire - with my recorder's effects processor it sounds better than my ears hear anymore.

Want a really good Les Paul but can't persuade the wife person. (To be fare, she's gottem me a labrador, a 35 hp tractor and a Roland Boss recorder in the last year, so I really can't complain.

I played a Gretch many years ago, a fine guitar.

My sister-in-law has a Gretsch 6120 Chet Atkins she inherited from her late father. She wouldn't sell it for anything. What's something like that worth? I'm sure it depends on the year, condition, etc.
I love the sounds of a Gretch meself.

Fark all of you out there that say only one type of guitar over another. I have a Fender Stratocaster, a Gibson Les Paul(studio), a Gretsch Electromatic, a Fender 12 string, and a Martin 000XE. They are all good guitars, each one has their own personality and sound that's great for a different kind of music. Playing/owning a range of different guitars is like being able to sleep with a bevy of beautiful women. You all sound like some douche that says he only sleeps with 5'5', 100.3lbs, green eyed, blondes with a 34C.

Gretsch's are good for a 50's twang not droped D metal riffs.

GibbyTheMole 2008-07-09 09:17:32 AM
I used to own a Silver Anniversary Chet Atkins Gretsch 6120. It was a gorgeous instrument with a pretty nice neck. When I think of what it's probably worth now, I still kick myself for getting rid of it.

My wife's dad was a Gretsch guy. He had two White Falcons, the "Country Gentleman", and a 6120. And he could play the living crap out of them. Lots of Chet-type stuff, Merle Travis, etc.

I gotta say I agree with dictyboy about Gretsch quality being uneven. A friend of mine has a White Falcon that he let me play awhile back & the thing had a neck like a fencepost! I wasn't too impressed.

Nowadays, I mainly gig with my trusty little 1984 Japanese Fender Strat with hot rails, or for the blues stuff my '92 Fender American Standard Strat. They're just a comfy guitar. I also have a Gibson Les Paul & a '76 Gibson Marauder with 496R pickups. I like 'em, but don't gig often with them because of the weight. If you think the LP is heavy, the Marauder's a beast!

I've had tons of guitars. Some great, some not so great. Some of the really good ones were brands you might not expect, like Yamaha, Westone, and even my dad's sweet old Japanese Crestline LP copy, which I still own, and though the frets are almost gone (gonna get that fixed) the neck is like butta. You can't always tell if a guitar is a good one by the name on the headstock.
