Haven't heard this song, but his music is good. I'll bet his albums have higher ratings from both fans and critics than whatever you listen to, submitter.

pshaw! Dizzee Rascal is better than 99% of the crap on the radio that tries to pass itself off as hip hop these days.

Isn't it racist to suggest that rap is misogynist, homophobic, violent or "stoopid"? You cannot say anything disparaging about the genre, because it is perpetrated by the attractive and successful brethren. Shame on ya.

This is about the UK and that's not rap, it's grime.

Klassy.

And Coldplay... you were never the best, but seriously, you should have stopped when you were still okay. Like five years ago.

Blech.

I like it. Anyone who doesn't, has different musical tastes from me. There's nothing wrong with that.

I'll probably get the acapella and have a remix of it on my next mixtape. I don't get why people are so quick to hate on music. Even if a song isn't absolutely amazing, it can still make some good remix fodder. I love turning trash into treasure.

Actually, Dizzee's been around for a bit. He's not so bad, and he's definitely not hip hop.

Grime's not my cup of tea, but the whole UK garage, two-step, etc. thing is a weird mutant alien that just keeps coming back to life with a different guise. I really like one of the variants...dubstep. That is some massively wicked stuff.

Perhaps subby was simply reacting to the song title.

Which does qualify for either stupid or sad tags.

I saw Dizzee Rascal play here in L.A. with El-P and Busdriver a few months ago...Dizzee killed it. KILLED IT. I don't think the crowd was ready for that performance since most of them were there to see El-P. He did "Stop Dat" and the crowd went nuts...a mosh pit formed, but not one of those "oh haha we're moshing at a hip-hop show" mosh pits, but an angry, fists flying, GTFO of my way mosh pit...

I love his music but like his first album "Boy in the Corner" the best. His newer stuff is cool but I prefer the straight up dirty/grimy sound of his debut. New track is kinda meh...

/fix up!

British people shouldn't rap, except Slick Rick.

Dizzee just keeps going further and further down the path of "British MC trying to mimic Americans, dragging down the quality of the music to the point of embarrassment."

Glitchwerks
Actually, Dizzee's been around for a bit. He's not so bad, and he's definitely not hip hop.

Thanks for this--he did win the Mercury Prize for Boy In Da Corner a few years ago, after all. (For dipshiats like subby, the Mercury Prize is a kinda important award given in Britain to really, really good albums.)

barneyfifesbullet:He'll be gone forever in a week or so like most hip hoppers, so it doesn't matter.

Fail. Fail. Fail.

browntimmy
Anybody remember when black people played instruments?

Again, Fail. Dizzee wrote and performed the aforementioned Boy In Da Corner almost entirely by himself, programming some inventive-ass beats and almost no samples (save for a pretty obvious Billy Squier beat for "Fix Up, Look Sharp," one of the best rap songs of the past decade). What's amazing is that Dizzee came up with all of this shiat (and won a Mercury Prize for it) when he was still a teenager.

Unfortunately, his subsequent albums have gone more in a crunk direction, eschewing the social commentary of his debut and focusing more on the bland, boring, typical "I got money, I got biatches" fare that characterizes most hip-hop these days.

Although "Sirens" was a dope song. And that guest spot on that Arctic Monkeys cut was pretty cool.

"Again, Fail. Dizzee wrote and performed the aforementioned Boy In Da Corner almost entirely by himself, programming some inventive-ass beats and almost no samples (save for a pretty obvious Billy Squier beat for "Fix Up, Look Sharp," one of the best rap songs of the past decade)."

It appears to be writing credit on all songs, but 5-6 tunes he certainly didn't write or perform (in terms of production) by himself. About 40% of the album is not from him. If you mean perform in terms of vocal tracks, of course. There are more samples than the obvious- a few that had to be given writing credit. Perhaps you don't know the cuts as deep as you think you do:

http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:jbfrxqrald6e

Grab the writing credits then google the other people along with ascap or bmi (the songwriting credit holders) and it becomes evident who wrote or who sampled the main hook. Also I couldn't find the sample clear sheet for that album, but I'm sure there is one out there, just maybe not online. If there isn't a clear sheet for it somewhere, he'll be paying all of that back sooner or later.

There are many more samples out there on hiphop albums than people let on. Even a sheet with all the sample clearances from the record label omits some samples (all though it is less common now).

Thank god these two things are always an accurate indication of quality.

Critics aren't ever influenced by money or pressure from their employers, and fans are never idiots who buy into lifestyle depictions and brand marketing instead of evaluating talent and the actual music.

No, it's stupid to say ALL hip-hop is misogynist, homophobic, and violent because that is only a specific kind of hip-hop that has those elements. You do sound racist though, because people that bring up race so defensively tend to be.

So...that's why he tours with El-P and the rest of Definitive Jux which was mentioned earlier in this same thread?

Yeah, they must really want to smack that limey git.

It's grime, and it's based on the dancefloor, just like the rest of the whole UK garage movement.

Grime manages to go much further than rap, there's less about being "gangster" and more about life. As far as grime goes Dizzee is pretty much the top right now.

It's just your accents make it sound like garbage, no offense. Maybe you guys are keeping it more real than our hip-hop artists (though America has all the old-school legends and our underground is still better) but y'all just sound funny when y'all rap.

Listen to Roots Manuva, who can give most anyone a run for the money.

Grime and a lot of British rap takes more from ragga and dancehall than it does hip hop, which is why the vocalists come at it from a completely different angle. It's also why the music is more party oriented, and less about rolling in your whip with your system up.

Saying it sounds funny is like saying Buju Banton sounds funny. Yeah, if you're not used to it, I'm sure it sounds like Cookie Monster singing or something. If you said that to someone in Jamaica, they would probably slap you or something. Just sayin'.

Be assured that producers like Timbaland have been ripping off the UK scene for years, so even if this stuff isn't popular now, it will be when some fake asses like him and Storch sell it right back to you.

Well hip-hop in the US was influenced by Jamaicans and how they were into "toasting", so that's nothing new. I dunno, I just think it's strange to hear people with British accents rapping. I enjoy hearing Jamaicans do their thing, but when Brits do it I just think it's funny. Their accent is almost too formal sounding to have a good flow. I;m probably talking out my asshole cause that Roots Manuva guy you brought up is actually good in my opinion (just checked him out).

This song is amazing. It's just so much *fun*, and I'll probably get a whuppin' for suggesting this, but I think it could be the best thing he's done so far. His first stuff was v. good, but he kind of lost me with that 'Happy Talk' sample... Good to have him back.

Oh, and I've not heard the whole Coldplay album, but the title track is brill.

I'd agree. His earlier stuff was a little too raw, but having Calvin Harris in there with a bit of 80's keyboard action has really turned it around (for this single at least)
