Do enough drugs with Jim Morrison and you will believe just about anything.

The guy is serious too... What is it? Brain damage? or is this guy hopelessly naive?

Like a 12-year-old he will never stops to believe NO MATTER WHAT!

I'm not wishing the man dead, or anything like that. I'm just going to say that whether he's dead or alive or somewhere in between, as long as I don't have to hear any more of his music everything's fine and dandy.

Going to have to second this notion. One of the most pretentious and overrated bands ever...

This is called feeding the legend.

Of course he doesn't believe it.

Wow. Why all the hate for the Doors? They were a better than average band, reasonably talented, and they happened to be pretty transformative.

I really don't see how they're overrated.

gilgigamesh 2008-07-06 04:53:52 PM
To clarify, by transformative I just mean they happened to be at the right place and right time. And they shaped late 60s music quite a bit as a result.

But most great bands owe a large part of their success to luck, so I don't see that as detracting from their legacy.

That

There was some weird circumstances surrounding his death that would justify some people's belief that he could be alive. I'm sure he did die in that bathtub, but then again, if he was alive, it wouldn't really surprise me.

OK, but their stuff hasn't held up, IMO. There's a lot of late '60s stuff that stiil sounds great. If I never hear Light My Fire again, it will be 20 years too soon.

Agreed!

How many bands since have written and recorded anything as epic as 'Light My Fire?'

They also wrote what could be the theme song for the internet, 'People Are Strange.'

Yeah, its been overplayed on radio for 40 years. I feel the same way about Stairway to Heaven and Hey Jude.

That doesn't mean it doesn't stand the test of time.

Yea but they have some great tracks. I listen to The Doors about two weeks every year to remind myself why they are good and then i forget about the, for another year. LA Woman is a great song and I have always liked Cars Hiss By My Window. I think they will hold up just because Jim was sucha great front man.

Yeah.

Plus Dennis Leary's comments on him: 'Im hot, Im drunk: Im fat' Im drunk....

Mostly over wrougth 'mystical' bullshiat lyrics backed by a
pretty good band.

I dont own any Doors but still like the songs LA WOMAN and \
Land HO!

But 'People are Strange' or 'The End'? Crap.

Makes you wonder about the reports that Jim actually had instructions for their management company in place for how to know to handle requests they received from him should he decide to fake his death and disappear.

That's pretty much where I'm at. I thought the band was pretty good. Morrison had some on-stage antics and a carefully crafted persona. I just don't like his voice all that much, actually. He wasn't a very good singer, and his lyrics were just... trying too hard. Maybe it's because he's been imitated so much, I dunno. But by the time I got to him, I'd heard his same schtick over and over. But then again, I don't care for poetry much.

Let the man rest in peace...

I'm not saying I'm worn out on it; I'm saying it's just fundamentally not that good. Seriously, Light My Fire sounds like a dirge written by a depressed 10th grader and performed by people who either hated regular meter or failed to grasp it. Was the band innovative and important? I'll go along with that, but so was Melville, and I'll be damned if I'm reading Moby Dick again.

Then this comes down to a matter of opinion like most things.

I would like to read through Moby Dick another time though. Maybe ill throw on a Doors album and start that tonight. Thanks for giving me something else to do with my time besides sit here. ;)

C'mon haters: the Doors transformed music in their era. Of course they are somewhat dated now. its been almost half a farking century for godsakes. I still listen to sabbath (ozzy era) and can barely sit through their songs even though i think they kick ass.
I think the level of imitation over the years just jades people.

I wouldnt mind if they stopped playing the Doors on the radio though. And I lost all motivation to read about a sailors and whales. Some Bad Brains and internet is just much more appealing.

Seychelles would be a great place to disappear to. A tropical paradise that is still obscure and remote enough that you don't need to worry about 6 million possible tourists recognizing you. Also, no extradition treaties.

A lot of people don't want to accept that a famous person they admired has died. Jim Morrison allegedly had a closed casket funeral, which fueled the fire for those wanting to believe he was alive. This speculation led to the movie, "Eddie And The Cruisers".

jj325 [TotalFark] 2008-07-06 09:22:17 PM
I heard Jim and Andy Kaufman are traveling the country doing the lounge singer thing. One night Andy plays Tony Clifton, the next night it's Jim.

drdamned 2008-07-06 11:04:59 PM
I'm confused. Ray wrote a book about this. I know because I read it at least 3 or 4 years ago.

As a Doors fan I thought it was great. I wish it's true, but I doubt it is. I mean, it's not like I knew Jim Morrison so how could I possibly have an opinion on something like this?

I'm left to assume that he's trying to sell more books?

Whatever man, as long as he doesn't produce any poetry or music I am all for his quiet retirement of hanging out with the Big E and cheating at Backgammon.

Argue all you like about whether Jim Morrison was a good lyricist or singer, and I'll probably tend to agree with you. I like most of his lyrics, and I like his voice, but I can see why many don't, he certainly wasn't the most talented man out there.

However, you cannot deny that Robbie Kreiger, Ray Manzarek, and John Densmore were good musicians. Period. They all were/are very talented and made a very tight band. I tend to think that perhaps Morrison was the weakest link...

He was facing several charges in Florida including indecent exposure and was most certainly facing jail time just before his alleged death. He also developed a disdain for the press and his own celebrity so he's got the motivation to pull it off.

But the most startling evidence is he left everything to his girlfriend and a few months later she allegedly died. No photos have ever been seen of either corpse.

In Paris, where Jim died his OD would have been treated like a crime scene with police photos yet none exist.

its quite possible, but unlikely after all these years that he wouldn't re-emerge by now. Same with Elvis and 2pac.

But, there is very reputable rumor that Morrison did NOT die in the bathtub, but earlier in the night at a club bathroom doing heroin. The club owner and a friend carried to body home to escape culpability.

now that is some serious playa hation right there. Morrison, being the weak link in a band that soley existed because of him? The words were his. The fans were his. The Doors were Jim Morrison. I'll go further to say that the guitarist borders on the crappy level.

I'm not saying he didn't have charisma or make the band what it was. I'm saying on a level of pure talent, he probably had the least. Don't get me wrong, I love Jim Morrison. I know that he made the Doors. But you can't honestly say that he was the most talented singer or lyricist. He was a persona.

And Robby Krieger bordering on crappy?! I think not. Some of the Doors guitar parts are incredibly difficult to play or even come close to imitating.
