I swear the artists of the A-Ha video modeled the police guy with the wrench after my 1978 high school auto shop teacher. Same wrench, same intense yet dead-eyed stare, he always walked around with a vague but very real air of malevolence about him.

The "Take on Me" video remains one of my all time favorites, but that character creeped me out then, and now.

I dunno, did someone force them to look at them?

That is like asking if the Blackhole Sun video had some kind of negative impact on kids growing up in the 90s. If anything it provided a few laughs and creates an open mind towards weird images. They are just music videos and some good ones at that (A-Ha in particular).

I blame MAD magazine and Weird Al. Did it for me, anyway.

Oh no you didn't.

I always thought Suddenly Last Summer was interesting for that one chord progression. I never did find out what event she was talking about was...

Oh, and Billy Idol rocks.

It was all the Pogo Balls that gave me restless leg syndrome, slap bracelets that cut my arm and Garbage Pail kids that dulled my ability for human compassion.

The 80s were poison. (never trust a big butt and a smile)

I've never understood the zombie bits in the airplane graveyard subplot.

I nominate the following music videos:
"not one of us" by Peter Gabriel
"owner of a lonely heart" by Yes
and possibly "Pressure" by Billy Joel

CyranoJones 2008-07-06 07:43:54 PM
Shock The Monkey, Owner Of A Lonely Heart, Land Of Confusion, and One were all much more scary than the vids on that list.

One was 'really' scary b/c I had just read Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo when that came out.

/imagined it was 'me' in that existential hell.

lol...Thriller was goofy as hell...and I was little when it came out. I just thought it was stupid.

I think the video for "O Superman" by Laurie Anderson scared/scarred me much more than all of those.
And it's still pretty creepy.

Jeopardy by The Greg Khin band.

DRTFA but you could throw a dart at the wall of video names from the 2000s and you could find hundreds more disturbing.

somemoron:Cops? In the AHa video? *sigh* Friggin' moron can't even understand the characters in a video, and wants to critique it? Dumb fark.

Yeah, isn't that the driver and the pit crew of the rival car in the race?

I never saw it as a cop, and why would a cop be after him anyway?

TFA sucks anyway - the aha video still stands as one of the best ever made. It brings back real illustration techniques - frame for frame - instead of repeating backgrounds and flat colors. I don't think I've ever seen any of the others - we were too poor for cable in the 80's. I do remember seeing White Wedding on magic mushrooms and freaking over that...musta been the "try Comcast for 3 months free" era.

TFA Reminds me of the color commentary on VH-1's I Love the 70s...most of those people posing as pop culture queens weren't even born in the 70s - much less remember them! Author fails.

OnePalmTree 2008-07-06 09:57:09 PM

As a child of the nineties, I have to say that Black Hole Sun's video definitely freaked me out. Longstanding negative impact? No, but between the bizarre visuals and eerie-to-angry music, I was thoroughly unsettled as a lad whenever I happened upon MTV when my dad was watching. I distinctly remember something about a baby carriage being the most striking visual. I'm inclined to agree with the opening the mind toward weird images thing, though.

/I think I was... four when that video aired? So, cue the lawn comments.

Uhm, this list is strangely absent of Duran Duran's Wild Boys video, which was the ultimate whiskey tango foxtrot video of my childhood. Especially when the little demon thing pops out of the water @ approx 3:25.

Warning; Watching this video more than 3 times in a row will make you gay.

I'd also thank ZZ Top for convincing me that gremlins popped out of Swanson's Hungry Man Salisbury Steak TV Dinners.

When I was a kid, Boy George used to scare the hell out of me.

Now that I'm a 32 year old grown man, he scares me even more.

i was scarred more by Aerosmith as "Future Villain Band" in the movie "St Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band". Steven Tyler scared the crap out of me. i was four, what can i say.

The best Halloween costume I ever had in college was the shirt-made-of-inner-tubes that I copied from the Dancing With Myself video. Spiked up my hair, wore ripped jeans, and sneered all night long. Colder than a motherfarker, of course...
