and
2. Dealers are offering huge discounts on gas guzzlers right now

then, yes, it is.

The entire RV "lifestyle" is retarded. You can't "see the country" in an RV if the only places you ever go are campgrounds and Wal-Marts.

Screw RVs and the retirees that own them.

I met and became friends with a guy who has RV while camping at Topeka for the drag races. He told me that an RV salesmen told him once that if a customer ever inquired about the MPG of an RV, they're not a potential customer.
Met them again at the races again this year & they stayed at a hotel because gas prices were too damn high...

I suspect they could give a cr&p what you think. And I suspect they wouldn't care for whatever it is that you happen to like. See? That's kind-of the neat thing about individualism ... not everybody likes the same things. (lessens the demand for those things I happen to like.

You see more of it than you can jetting between major cities. (Unless you're one of those losers who never pokes their heads outside the RV.)

Besides, gas isn't going to be any cheaper - if you can afford it now, might as well enjoy it a little longer.

My dad is thinking of buying a new SUV that is around a year or two old. He has a 1995 Yukon that he bought new that has less than 100k miles. His work commute is a total of 6 miles round trip to work. But it is handy to have a vehicle where you can haul stuff around when you need to work on things.

I was going to buy one. I then did the math and figured out how much I was likely to use it, and then doubled that amount figuring I'd use it more once I had it. I came out WAAAYYYY ahead by staying at 5-star hotels and driving a car.

The economy, while not great, hasn't been in a recession and certainly not a depression. Most major media outlets have been keeping up the "you'll be stone dead in a moment" argument but it just won't go down. I heard someone call it the "Rasputin economy".

With oil inventories as high as they are, the era of cheap gas will come again, just like it did 25 years ago. Maybe not quite that cheap, but people who buy gas guzzlers now are taking a bit of a risk if the price downturn doesn't happen soon.

/Yaaay! I'm arguing on teh intartubes!

I took my old honda (1982), it ran well, I never had a worry about the bike. Now, riding through the rocky mountains was cold, if i ever do that again I will wear warmer cloths. I met a lot of cool people on motorcycle journeys as well. They were doing well. My biggest problem was fatigue, while riding through the desert especially. It can be lots of fun, but it can be very dangerous. You have to know your limits, and drive like everyone on the road does not see you, because they probably don't.

That's the thing that most people just don't seem to get. They just like to throw feces at SUV drivers even though a lot of them have really short commutes. Mpgs matter just as much as commuting distance. I have an f-150 but my commute is only 10 miles all highway. I work with people who have 40-50 mile commutes. They have Civics and corrolas. They use 13-14 gallons a week. I use 5. But since I'm driving a truck I must somehow be raping the environment more than they are.

In1974 my dad bought a new Celica. the same dealer could have sold him several big block muscle cars (including a couple of vettes) for the same payments.

So depending on what car you buy right now you may be purchasing a future collectible. But car speculation today is riskier than smoking crack with DC mayors.

From what I've seen with my 07 Toyota, cars aren't built to last more than the duration of a lease anymore. YMMV but I doubt that any car made since 2000 will be collectible.

How is 12 hours of staring at the trees/fields/whatever on the side of an interstate considered a good view?

And yes, I *do* think that if you want to see the country, you should fly from city to city, and stay in a nice hotel. Or stay with friends, if you can. Stay for a week, at least. Hang out. LIVE in the place.

Hanging out at a campground doesn't count. Driving through a state doesn't count as "seeing it".

/America, the cheap energy party is OVER!!!

The era of cheap energy was over in 1939. (OMG WAR)
Then it was over in the '60's (OMG TEXAS IS RUNNING OUT!)
Then it was over in 1973. (OMG THE ARABS)
Then it was over in 1979. (OMG THE ARABS AGAIN)
Then it was over in 1991. (OMG WAR)
Then it was over in 2000. (OMG ROLLING BLACKOUTS)
Now it's over in 2008.

Oil's expensive right now, people. Whether it's actual market forces, market manipulation, or rampant speculation, is actually kind of irrelevant. Energy isn't.

There's essentially a limitless supply of hydrocarbons in this world. Some are pumped from the ground (crude), some are mined (tar sands), some are cooked out in place (oil shale), some are made (Fisher-Tropsch anything), and some are grown (bio-whatever.)

There's too much money to be made in oil right now for the prices to stay this high. When home prices quadrupled, everybody and their brother built new houses. There's now a glut on the market, and it's screwing some people (like me) over.

Saying that market pricing is a function of instantaneous supply and demand is like saying friction is Fr = μN. It's a good start, but it falls apart in the real world.

If you can afford a $300k RV, $5 gas is just a minor annoyance to you anyway.

"Some dealers are having a tough time, and a coach that cost $300,000 last year may cost $200,000 this year. You can buy a lot of gas for $100,000."

A few comments:

1.) Prices dropping from $300k to $200k tells you what kind of gouging you were getting before.

2.) $200-$300k can get you a house instead.

3.) $100k can get you 25k gallons of gas (at current prices). An RV gets 8-10 mpg. You can travel 225k miles with that much money.

RV users average 3k miles a year citation. At current gas prices that's $12,000 during the year 2008.

If gas rises at the current rate of 8.9%/yr (that's the cost increase during the year 2007 citation) then his $100k will run out in the year 2013:

2008: $4.00 gallon/$12,000
2009: $4.36 gallon/$15,681 ($27,681 cumulative)
2010: $5.23 gallon/$18,817 ($46,499 cumulative)
2011: $6.27 gallon/$22,581 ($69,081 cumulative)
2012: $7.53 gallon/$27,097 ($96,178 cumulative)
2013: $9.03 gallon/$32,517 ($128,696)

Six years of travel in his shiny new RV, which cost him $200k yields a COL of $33.3k a year just in 'housing'. A $200k mortgage will cost approx $1,200 a month, or $14,400 a year. For the sake of argument I'm going to use my monthly utilities as a base-line for utility costs (I live in Sunny CA) of $4,000 a year, adding up to $18,400/yr housing and utility citation.

So he's spending $20k more a year on 'housing' and $10k more on 'utilities', running out of 'savings' in five years.

He's wrong. Now is not the time to be buying a gas-guzzler.
