Yeah, not to make it sound uncaring and harsh, but maybe it's time to give up driving, before she ends up crashing through a farmer's market or something.

91. I'm moved more towards pity than anything else. I'll get over it.

Just presuming, was she heading out to buy one of those new fangled jugs of milk she heard about on CBS news?

I think 91 years old entitles her to a pass on the "stupid" tag, subby. "Sad" seems more appropriate.

Blonde was the first thing I thought.
Then I read. Kinda sad, actually. If it hadn't been for the mail-man noticing she hadn't gotten her mail in a couple days, she might have died under there.

Well she is a lady and not a sand crab, right? I can't wait to get my Community College Associate's, so that I can become a police chief too.

HoneyDog 2008-07-06 09:36:27 AM
Massive FAIL for using the stupid tag there subby. Lets see how well you think and function at 91 years old.

That said, if she's that out of it at 91, now would be a good time to give up driving.

smasho 2008-07-06 09:36:49 AM
Yeah, we can't even really invoke Darwin's Law arguments in this case, since she (probably) can't reproduce.

Although, I'm willing to bet some farkers would be all up on that.

Just about everyone, you have to posses the auto unlockey thingy in order to unlock the vehicle.

I'm also moved toward the "sad" tag. My car seems like an evil beast anyway; how scary would it be to be stuck under it? But it does seem like she's too blind to drive anymore.

But we all know Grandma will be back behind the wheel of her '87 K-car before long. Heading out on the highway at a blistering 25mph.

Except for powdered milk making. Or if you're a dust bunny farmer you could run a butterfly net in her cooter for an endless supply. Old people are still useful... you just have to use your brains, morans.

As someone who's headed for 50, I think everyone over 60 should have to take a road test, an eye test, and a written driver's test every single damned year. Once you hit 75, you should have to do it every six months.

I've had too many old relatives who should NOT have been driving, but everyone felt too sorry for Grandma or Great-Uncle to say, "Hand over the keys. You're blind as a bat and/or senile and/or so shrunken by osteoporosis you can't see over the steering wheel anymore, and you're going to get someone killed if you keep driving."

At the age of 50, my uncle was almost killed because some 90-year-old guy crossed the median on a country highway and hit my uncle head-on when both of them were going over 55 MPH. My uncle was in a coma for a month, and the 90-year-old guy died.

Driving is a privilege, not a right. If you're not physically or mentally capable of doing it, you shouldn't be allowed to do it. This is why I've moved to a city with good public transportation, so if I lose the ability to drive as I age, I'll still be able to get around without bugging my relatives for rides. I've told all my relatives to take away my car as soon as they feel I'm no longer a good driver (of course, one of them asked if they could then retroactively take away my keys 30 years ago, but that's another story).

/OK, the pendantic old lady has spoken her piece. Now all the smart-a$$ funnier people than me can resume the thread.

What gets me about this is that from an early age I misplaced stuff all the time and would find it in either a very obvious place (on the table by the door) or in a very weird place (how the hell did that end up in the breadbox?).

I never realized til moving in with bf last year that most people don't have this problem. No wonder so many of you have all the time in the world to post on Fark. You aren't looking for your keys, glasses, shoes, pen, the blue blouse etc.

/If this gets worse as I age, I'm heading for that axle under the car.

The story does not state where the car was. In a garage, door closed, in the driveway? If the car was in the driveway then the dumass tag is warranted for the neighbors not noticing legs sticking out from under the car.
Kudos for the mailman for actually noticing the mail stacking up, AND taking action. She must bake GREAT cookies at Christmas.

My first thought reading the headline was "Grandma?" My grandmother is about 90 years old, has seizures, uses a walker and is nearly blind and recently failed her driving test three times before finally passing the fourth time, yet the State of Florida persists in allowing her to drive. I was not surprised to read TFA and find the lady was 91.

/bet the lady in the article was "confused" before she got stuck too.
