They aren't freaking out about the shape so much as they are freaking out about not being able to pour from the damn things without spilling milk all over the place. Fix the pour spout and they are fine.

Oh, those milk jugs. Thank God.

SnarfVader 2008-07-06 07:33:39 AM
"My friend bought it and hates it...it doesn't pour very well," one grocery store customer told CBS News.

Despite all the claims in the article as to why these jugs are superior, this single sentiment will completely derail the entire idea.

"Because of the shape, traditional milk jugs can't be stacked, so they're shipped in milk crates. But they waste space on delivery trucks..."

So, why do they sell oil in jugs, then? They used to come in easily stackable cans.

Correct the pour problem and consumers will warm up to them. But you can bet that if they don't these jugs will be about as popular as New Coke.

We do milk in bags. I tried jugged milk when I went shopping in the states and it tastes too much like plastic.

Our sam's club just recently took them off the shelves. I don't remember having any problem with pouring. Plus, they look cool.

/I, for one, welcome our new milk jug overlords... etc. etc.

Are you sure you were actually drinking the milk, because it sounds like you did it wrong.

Of course, put a few flyover state soccer moms and their faux outrage to legitimize the story.

/this would be easily solved with a slight modification of the pour spout
//duh

It takes two times to get used to the pouring change. Once to realize there is a difference and the second time to adjust. Is this a repeat?

See, that's the smart way of looking at the idea. For a good news story, you need that certain something...that "OMG!!OFFENDED!111" factor.

I'd like to see the shape of Katie Couric's milk jugs.

/just wanted to get that out of the way

But the new packaging may also save you money - about 10 to 20 cents per gallon.

Yeah, I can't wait to see the industry pass the savings along to the consumer.

And that's the way the cookie crumbles!

I hate it when news writers try to be funny. It always sounds like that cheesy joke uncle Bob whips out 15 times at every family reunion because someone chuckled at it a few years ago. Little does uncle Bob know that we die a little on the inside every time we hear it.

here in Germany, we (mainly) have these designs here. perfectly stackable, and recyclable as well. Also, pouring is a breeze. Having lived in the states for the better part of the past 10 years, I still silently shake my head over the flimsy plastic thingies you call "milk jugs".

No - there are still glass bottle dairies around and they command premium prices - for exactly the reason I stated. It could also be pointed out that plastic jugs only add to the oil problem. I don't have recent figures but at one point we were using more oil for plastics (including milk jugs, soda and water bottles, etc.) than we were for fuels of all types. Don't know if that's still the case but given the predominance of plastics in the world I can't see that it would have changed.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you that milk tastes better from glass bottles (in fact everything does) I just haven't seen them in forever.

TheMega 2008-07-06 08:34:39 AM
Who cares what it looks like (just not penis-shaped) as long as you can pour it without wasting the 'extra' milk all over the counter and subsequently wasting water, cleaner and towels to clean up the damned mess.

Find it odd the idiot asses that designed the new jug never tried to pour liquid out of it.

Which is why I still milk my own cows and have my own glass milk bottles. At least now I have a milking machine. I used to milk by hand. Too much work and I could never get the wife to "sub" for me. Home-churned butter is better also.

No, I'm not Amish although my daughter teases me that I'm Amish except for the religion. But I don't worry about the tomato scare, the spinach scare, hamburger recalls, or the shape of milk jugs.

Come to think of it, I don't live in 1957. Except for the computers, internet, thoroughly modern house (we even have running water and flush toilets!!!!) it's more like 1908!

The trick to pouring any container is confidence. These new jugs aren't working because people don't have any confidence that they will. They are too used to pouring from the old jugs which are just as much if not more awkward. This is probably because the first time they poured from the old gallon of milk is when they were kids. And more then likely spilled it all over the place then also.

Hey, Sport - since you're such a presumtive twat, is this the right time to point out that while I make a hell of a lot more money than you do (I'll be presumptive, too!), that my girlfriend and I don't own a car (we choose to live in a walking/biking town), haven't taken a carrier bag from a supermarket in close to a decade, purposely have a refrigerator that stores no more than a few days goods at most, and the total volume of rubbish generated by our household in the UK every two weeks is less than a third of a standard town rubbish bin's worth.

I don't think such a high-strung Internet tough-guy even drinks beer.

Rubberband Girl [TotalFark] 2008-07-06 09:05:01 AM
A NYT article on these jugs was posted last week and the problem seems to be the spout, specifically it's larger then the ones on the current jugs and it's position that encourages spillage.

Fix that and people will be fine.
