OK, making some extra cash because you were Governor (or President, in Clinton's case) is one thing, but for what reason does his SISTER get 10-15 thousand for a speech. Her only marketable ability is the fact that one brother was selected to be POTUS, and the other was elected to be governor of Florida. WTF!

Even if you are a die-hard GWB-supporter, you have to question that.

tararose 2008-07-06 07:23:22 AM
FTA: In the 18 months since leaving the Florida Governor's Mansion, he has quietly remade himself into a capitalist-entrepreneur extraordinaire.

In the 18 months since leaving office? I would say he did pretty well for himself, or at least his big business buddies (see: tax cuts/breaks, offshore drilling contracts), while in office.

Why? If someone is willing to pay the son/daughter/relative for a speech, then take it. And no, I'm not a die hard GWB suppporter. I do support capitalism and the right of stupid people to be relieved of their money.

Things that happened in my area of Florida under this crook:
A functioning airport was moved into the middle of Arvida (formerly Dow chemical) land, twenty miles from town into a area in the middle of wetlands (swamp). The airport was planned by Betchel, and is being built by KBR. KBR is subbing out the contracts to the local republican bigwigs. When they started, they said it would cost 90 million, now they have a 350 million grant from the feds and it will still cost 90 million. This is only to build the airport, now they are building roads (with republican companies getting the insider contracts) out to the middle of nowhere. Arvida (Dow Chemical) stock went through the roof, and politically connected insiders made millions. There was a non-binding referendum which was voted down, otherwise the locals had no say over whether we got this freaking boondoggle---the decision was made by then governor Bush and the white house.

So now we see the rest of the story, where Jeb gets his payback.

Jeb Bush, and for that matter, once he is outta-here, GWB have at least done something to make them worthy of getting paid ridiculous amounts of money to make a speech.
I ask again: What the Frak qualifies his youger sister to get paid $10,000-$15,000 dollars for a speech, just because her older brothers were politicians?

It's a simple question, asshat. But I'm willing to bet that your only response is something along the lines of: "Libtards. There's no hate like libtard hate."

You will never see the irony in what you posted, but....alas. What I meant was, perhaps there are groups that are interested in hearing stories from the sister/daughter/granddaughter of a Gov, Pres, Sen etc. so what is there to question? I mean is she taking money from criminals and then lobbying for pardons? Then yeah, I would question that but the fact that Joe's Real Estate company uses her as a guest speaker at their annual meeting I don't find unusual

tararose: My question is, why does it take people so damn long to see what these guys are doing?

This was all hidden from us locally, while the monopoly local newspaper had editorials by airline industry "experts" about how much this airport would do for the local economy. FAA experts, airline industry experts, economists from select towns which had an airport built years before that had brought in new jobs, and environmental experts. Before the referendum, we were assailed with TV ads that were so absurd that even the school kids made fun of them. (a old man and his grandson fishing in a john boat, with the man explaining how building in the wetlands will improve the environment, among others). The local AM talk-radio (Limbaugh, Savage, et al), and the local nightly political TV show started a campaign for the new airport, portraying themselves as forward thinking and mocking everyone against the airport as being against all progress.

A retired AF general wrote a report on what infrastructure costs would take the price of the new airport to, and it made one of the local blogs. People started referring to it on the other blogs, from the TV stations and the local newspaper. One day the general's report disappeared, and within a months time all those other blogs were changed to a new format, with none of the old posts available.

And if you say that all this collusion is a conspiracy, you are quickly labeled as a "nut job".

When Bush delivered a speech about diversity in South Korea in May 2007, his host was Jin Roy Ryu, a longtime family friend and contributor to his father's presidential library. About four months later, a subsidiary of Ryu's company, Poongsan Corp., was awarded a contract of up to $1.1-billion to supply the U.S. Mint with metal used in coins

Because someone is willing to pay it?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorothy_Bush

It isn't like she hasn't done ANYHING, she is the daughter of a President, sister to another, sister to a former Gov of Florida, and worked as an aide for the former Democratic leader of the house.

Besides that she seems to be a pretty good fundraiser and non-profit organizer (I know a couple of those a lot less famous that get $1000-$2000 a speech).

On top of that, the $10k number is from her agent's speaking site, which are always super inflated. I have booked speakers and the prices are very inflated, notice if you search for someone to speak for you (search keynote speaker) and the same people show up with every firm. I assume that is them bumping up the price for profit.

Example, this is one site's "featured speaker"
http://keynotespeakers.com/speaker_detail.php?speakerid=4930

$7000 to $15,000 and I am still not entirely sure why you would pay to see him.

oh yeah, he is being shaped and molded as we speak. looks like he is well on his way.
