It should be noted, they could play everything convincingly, live, in concert, before the days of MIDI sampling (Peart no longer has chimes & gongs in his drum repertoire).

Saw them play this on the R30 tour. Seen them 7 times (inc. in Philly 3 weeks ago). They have never given an off-performance & have only gotten better with age!

Seriously, though, Rush is the best. I saw them on the R30 tour in Milwaukee.

Equally bombastic (new window)

One of their later late-'70s prog songs, which they nail in a latter-day concert.

My luck ... I missed the COUNTERPARTS tour where they did Cyg II-Hemispheres

Say what you will about Rush, but there will never be a group of three better musicians to collaborate for as long as they have ever again. Their skills, timing, ability, and lyrical fortitude are unmatched.

Seven times here as well. The first time we saw them was as the opening act for Blue Oyster Cult and the next time they were opening for Aerosmith. After that they were headliners all the way.

Going to see 'em (second time this tour) on the 12th. Can't wait. A GUARANTEED amazing show.

More Rush! It's a good thing.

I haven't missed them in concert since Moving Pictures. Every year they just get better and better. I have never seen a better live show. Ever.

gilgigamesh 2008-07-06 10:20:53 AM
Rush hit New Orleans on this last tour. They happened to be here at the height of crawfish season. I couldn't catch them, had some personal stuff going on.

Anyway, Geddy and Alex are apparently avid golfers, and a friend's son is semi-pro and apparently knows them.

So they were playing a few rounds together, and he invited Geddy and Alex over to my friend's house for a crawfish boil afterwards. So they came by, brought guitars, played a few songs and ate some crawfish. My buddy got backstage passes, and got invited to their Red Rocks show a few days later too.

He isn't a big rush fan, actually, but he says they couldn't be nicer, more down to earth guys.

I only wish he had told me about this *before* it happened. Ergh.

I was going to see them in DC in a couple of weeks, but chose to sell my tickets. I've seen them 6 times in 3 tours since I moved to the US in 1999, and when I found out that I would only be exposed to one song I'd never seen them play live (a subpar one, no less) in a 3-hr set, so I call bullshiat. This is a bogus tour as far as I'm concerned.

eh, I was wondering what the 18 and 10 string guitars were until I figured out they were double-neck guitars.

There's definitely worse prog-bloat out there, even among Rush's catalogue. Xanadu is one of their best songs, though.

Funny.

I am just now about to buy some bass synthesizer pedals.

The manufacturer's website included some sound samples and one is a "Tom Sawyer/Moog Taurus" sound.

Very groovy in a classic Prog kinda way.

The band I am in is no way like Rush but we are trying for the same three guys attempting to sound like four or five guys as Rush does.

Neil Peart I met at a FUneral wake years back before I was a Rush Fan. Good thing I wasnt, would have probably embarrassed him and myself then. Ive met celebrities before in chance meetings, and never really made a big deal about it before, but I still remember the Peart moments fondly, only for the sake of knowing the legendary aspects I discoverred of him after meeting him.

Long live Rush

P.S. I also like Old school Rap, Acid Jazz/Trance, Classical, whatever has a good beat. No offense to SKids, but I aint one.

Saw Rush and was a huge fan during the Golden Years of A FArewell to Kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures. Saw the Hemispheres, PW, MP and Signals tours. Gave up on them after Grace Under Pressure and have never looked back but have always considered Ged an influence on my playing as far as having high technical skills and as using a bass player as front man (like McCartney was for me for the same reason).

I kinda-sorta knew them through the friend of a friend and a one-time backstage jaunt; Alex and Ged were always very funny and cool. I felt that they were betraying their personalities by allowing Peart to write such trite, mystical, pseudo-intellectual BS lyrics, ESPECIALLY when he complained about how cold-hearted technology was and how everyone should be closer to their hearts.

Fercrissakes, Neil, you're entire band's existence depends on a high level of technology so please shut up and write songs about soup or something.

I can't believe I watched the whole thing. That was the most pompous, pretentious, 70's-prog-silly performance I've seen in quite awhile.

Enjoyed every minute of it. +1

Truth. Rush is good, but if you dig into the prog catacombs, you'll find much more adventurous and technically gifted musicians.

Henry Cow FTW.

Allow me to be the first to say, who?

Okay, went and played the audio samples. Apart from the surprise of finding out I still have realplayer on my mac, there was little of interest there. Sounds like the filler they play in between segments of Fresh Air on NPR.
