Troll all you want, Obama is still going to win. Why don't we discuss how to make sure he follows through on his policies instead of these stupid threads?

This is Fark, and Obama going to a NASCAR event is political news because it's odd and out of place for him. Hardly a troll.

I'll give the guy props for trying, but this is kinda silly. Why? It's not gonna win him any votes (maybe a handful, not enough to make a difference) or any money (not like he needs it after his 'opting out' of public finance). It will just become fuel for ads showing him getting booed and jeered.

Obama is going to have a hard time following through on anything if the economy goes as bad as expected.

Actually, I think it's more like McCain going to a NASCAR race.

/Come on, let's face it, neither one of them would be there if they didn't have to pander.

This is the type of stuff politicians do that makes me cringe. I just hope he doesn't get as bad as Hillary was with these gigs -- Hint: when they ask you questions you don't know the answer to at deals like this, just say that you don't know; don't try to b.s. an answer or you'll just sound like a fool.

Min5trel [TotalFark] 2008-07-06 05:30:20 AM
So, what does Obama talk about at such an event? Energy dependence (as he's choked by the hydrocarbons of thousands of internal combustion engines?) Gun control? FISA immunity? Middle East policy? Hope (he gets off the stage soon?)

There's no win. No one goes to NASCAR to get pandered too, they go to get drunk, watch shiat go fast, or sell stuff to those that are getting drunk and watching said shiat. I guess it is an audience that, for him, is hard to reach, but trying to capture their attention during their "recreation" time is a losing proposition.

Take out more TV adds during races or reality shows. Anything more than that, and it's an "inconvenience."

This is clever stuff. First you hide the Republican failure by saying "all politicians are the same", then you equate Democrats with politicians.

Obama might as well show up at the Westboro baptist church. He'd be about as welcome. This is not the place for him to try to engage these people. not when they're all concentrated and their necks are all a brilliant red. It'd be like Bush visiting the 9th ward or Compton. Although those people would actually have a reason to hate Bush these people don't need a reason. They've been told by their master Talk Radio to hate this guy.

So, these 'people' you speak of so fondly, do you mean white people? Southern people? Baptist people? People who may work outdoors? People who listen to talk radio? Who exactly is this mass of people of whom you speak?

Clinton was jeered and booed because the NASCAR fans knew the reason he was there, and it was blatantly disingenuous and insulting. They would have the same reaction to Obama or McCain.

I'm not a fan of Rush by any stretch of imagination, but I don't think sweeping statements like this are the best way to get that point across. It's sort of like the "20 years of inflammatory comments" talking point that got dredged up so many times during discussions on the Wright (non) issue.

What are you going on about now? I just read your inane comment regarding Nazis in the "Triumph of the Will" thread ("They would be completely forgotten if American and British right wingers didn't spend their days fellating them and their nights dreaming of them." -- I'm still marveling at the sheer stupidity of that tidbit), and now this -- you've got me pegged as some Republican shill? That should be good for some laughs.

But it's all gone south since the Democrats took over Congress! Let's completely ignore that economic effects are often not felt for years after their causes and that it's because both parties have been spending money like drunken sailors, giving sweetheart deals to all their friends, etc.

Well, political rhetoric (especially from ditzy celebrities) is generally pretty distasteful. But quoting ten people hardly establishes a baseline for assessing the views of Sen. Obama's rather numerous supporters. I suspect that a great number of those who intend to vote for him in November simply perceive him as I do - the least objectionable of our (rather limited)* choices.
Anybody who thinks he is going to fix everything (or anything) overnight and all by himself is either a fool or caught up in the madness of crowds.
Let's face it - we are ALL responsible for the state we have allowed our country to get into. And we are ALL going to have to fix it. If we sit on our asses and wait for some savior (from the left OR the right) to come to our rescue and fix everything for us, we're screwed.

*And Nader, please. Libertarian me no libertarians and green me no greens. A third party will not win the White House in my lifetime, and quite possibly not in any of yours.
