Mileage thread!

A couple of weeks ago, we drove to Ontario in my 1995 Audi convertible, part of the way w/the top down. We got over 30 miles/gallon, but that's with fill ups with premium (about 50-60 bucks).

Bad news, though, for the big heavy cars/trucks out there. The good news is that scrap metal prices are way up.

I own one of those, too...until recently cycled 3x a week, the 16 miles a day to and from public transportation. These days I mostly telecommute from home and go in once or twice a week.

My old boat of a car (97 Oldsmobile) averages 28MPG, and it isn't worth anything to trade-in, so I guess that's good enough for me.

My old boat of a 93 camry gets about 30mpg. Although both back windows are broken, so that probably farks my mileage up.

This weekend i went from Rochester, New York to Worcester, Massachusetts on the way to; i got 38 mpg in my 1999 Honda Civic taking me approx 5 hrs and going back i got 35 mpg in approx 5.4 hrs.

I spotted 19 Toyota Priuses on the way back from MA.

6 of them were light blue.

1 of them was pulled over by a NY State cop and i thought to myself- A Prius goes fast enough to get pulled over?

carmody 2008-07-06 12:20:57 AM
I drive a '63 VW Beetle every day. Today I filled it up for $35 even. An old-timer came over to admire my car and said he had a similar one back in the '60s...back then he could fill the tank for under two bucks.

Even better is my '70 Honda CL450 motorcycle...totally empty, it only takes about ten bucks to fill. And it gets about 50 mpg, too, even when I drive like a bat out of hell (which I do).

We are in for a very difficult 5-7 years as we adjust to the new realities. This has been a ticking time bomb which Washington leadership has ignored since Ronald Reagan entered office. We have had the better part of thirty years to adjust to coming peak oil crisis. It is here today, and we are now forced to adjust rapidly instead of spreading the costs over decades, and having a coherent plan. WE still can't get coherent leadership beyond drill more oil. WTF!!!!!

Used to drive a Geo Metro which got a bit over 40MPG on the highway with its manual, 3 cylinder engine. Speedometer only went up to 90mph.

Kicked SUV ass in MPG, but not so much in safety...

I'm at 24-26 MPG with my car. lower 20's if I'm carless on how I drive. Even at a 18 gallon tank (16 by the light comes on, and I fill up) I'm only hitting $70 now. And that lasts me a week and half or a week if I had to do a lot of driving, but it's mostly a week.

$100 wouldn't bother me. But then maybe it's because I don't drive much. If I had to do $100 every few days it would hurt, but $100 every weekend - its all part of life. Adjust or die.

cycotica 2008-07-06 12:27:44 AM
I work at a convenience store/gas station in South Texas (where gas prices are still slightly below national average) and I have noticed a significant change in fueling habits as compared to when I was a teen and gas was still $1/gallon.

VERY few people come into my store requesting a fill-up. For the most part, I get people asking for $5 here, $12 there...basically enough gas to get them where they are going. They will stop by my store multiple times per day, but they seem to be more concerned with only keeping enough gas to get them to their destination at any given time.

/I fill up my tank for about $4/week
//just bought a scooter
///have had it for three weeks now and already had at least 5 offers to buy it from me

Yeah, but apparently it's better on their fuel pump... And the extra weight is probably negligible considering the fact that gas will usually only go up, so it's not like they'd save money in the long run by filling up less frequently since they're driving the same.

Spending $8k on a Metro is dumb, but selling your Yukon XL in favor of a Honda Civic (hybrid or not) might not be such a dumb move.

The mass of an extra half tank is pretty much irrelevant given the mass of the car itself. You probably waste more gas (not to mention time) needing to go to gas stations more often than you save with better mileage.

Dont trash out your big old gas guzzler just because prices are up here.....

Put it in a cargo container and ship it to the middle east, gas is cheap there and someone will pay for it....

I know of an outfit that does something similar, but they part the cars out and load them into a shipping container for other countries

If I had the money for a start up I would be looking into exporting hummers and escalades to the middle east and Russia, where the governmetns subsidize the price of oil....

I wish I could bike to work but it's quite a distance and I'm not biking down Washington (Indy) during rush-hour all the way to Plainfield.

The two good things are I drive an '05 Focus that gets great mileage and I don't work during the summer - so I walk or jog everywhere.

I could get to work by bike, I have in the past, but thats because it's only 7 minutes by car and maybe 1.5 liters of gas.
So less then 3 dollars saves me 80 minutes (round trip) of sweat and danger.
That doesn't factor in insurance, asset depreciation, government fees, assorted maintenance and normal wear and tear.
Once I'm paying that on a car another 1.5 liters to use the car becomes hard to resist.

AnyOne recall the sceen form Arrested Development where Jason Bateman tries to steal a big tv from work with his bike.....

Yeah, so bikes are pretty much out...

Cant ride em in the rain safley, no winter use, nightime is tricky, limited cargo capacity, show up to work needing a shower and new clothes, breathing exhaust the whole way, no multi tasking, those gay shorts, cant bring home anything with a dimension greater than 18x18 inches, wont be bringing home a hot chick period, sunburn, cant take them into elevators, cant leave em outside, a good one costs more than a metro, cant take your kids with you.....

Man, bikes suck.
