At least, if it's covered in batter and deep fried.

Yeah, the Democratic National Convention is looking to be a disaster right now.

For one thing, they're proving why some people call Democrats elitists.

In promoting healthy eating habits, the Democratic guidelines say every meal should be nutritious and include "at least three of the following colors: red, green, yellow, purple/blue and white."

Yes.. because it's all about the color of the food that makes the reeeeal difference! Where does purple rank on the food color pyramid anyways?

Also, there's no fried foods at the convention, which is leading to huge catering problems.

If the big wigs in the DNC had their way, fried foods would be banned forever, like what they're doing with transfats and smoking.

These problems go from the top down (such as Obama likely spending hundreds of millions for the Presidency). In fact, this reminds me of a classic movie. So here's an honest billboard for Obama.

img391.imageshack.us

But Axelrod would probably veto that idea.

In fact, Obama has a lot of money. Why not ask him to chip in a bit for the convention? Since Dean and the DNC are inept at fundraising and all. Obama has a lot of money, right? Why not spend some more of it for his nomination party?

He wouldn't want the convention to show America that an Obama presidency would be an epic disaster. Would he?

Atillathepun [TotalFark] 2008-07-06 03:34:53 AM
McCainDemocrat:Yes.. because it's all about the color of the food that makes the reeeeal difference!

Actually, if you weren't an idiot, you'd know that it does. In vegetables and fruits, colors often signify the presence of certain nutrients/antioxidents. Orange - beta caroten. Red - lycopene. And so on.

But you're so busy with your masturbatory trolldom you failed to keep up with even the most basic knowledge.

The problem is that leadership by committee is ineffective for ordering a farking pizza, let alone organizing an enormous event attended by tens of thousands of people.

Dean is currently a little too busy trying to get Democrats (re)elected to worry himself with seating arrangements and making sure there's a proper vegan selection at the chow line.

Ayup. Vote Buying 101: as opposed to just handing some guy a sack of money, paying him for rendering an unnecessary service is less likely to land you in federal PMITA prison.

Churchill2004:Keep laughing. Just remember, these are the people who want to "run the country".

BTW, here's the article in its entirity....

Sunday NYT: With the Denver bash less than two months away, problems range from spiraling costs on key contracts, reluctance of local caterers to participate because of stringent rules on food.

"At last count, plans to renovate the inside of the Pepsi Center for the Democrats are $6 million over budget, which may force convention planners to scale back on their original design or increase their fund-raising goals."

So, if the democrats take the option to "scale back on their original design" to actually stay in the budget rather than recklessly going over, does that mean that they're probably the best people for the job?

3_Butt_Cheeks 2008-07-06 04:49:32 AM
"to the mundane, like the reluctance of local caterers to participate because of stringent rules on what delegates will be eating, down to the color of the food."

It's THIS kind of silly nonsense that always seems to torpedo democrats every year. This "going green" you must eat what we tell you batshiat crazy DALIYKos/MoveOn.org fringe element is like an anchor to the D. party.

Gangway Fathead 2008-07-06 04:50:31 AM
I stand corrected. That isn't the entire article. The Fark TIME link links to an NYT article.

Why that is the case, I have no idea.

Who gives a shiat about a convention.

The farking balloons probably wont work this time anyway.

Gangway Fathead 2008-07-06 04:53:22 AM
Ugh, and then there's this in the NYT article....

Natalie Wyeth, a spokeswoman for the Democratic National Convention Committee in Denver...

She added, "We are exactly where we intended to be at."

How can you call democrats elitists when they're abusing the English language like that. What is this, a Boost Mobile ad?

CanisNoir [TotalFark] 2008-07-06 04:54:34 AM
Gangway Fathead:So, if the democrats take the option to "scale back on their original design" to actually stay in the budget rather than recklessly going over, does that mean that they're probably the best people for the job?

No, they are Democrats so I'm fairly certian they'll end up "Increasing thier fund-raising goals" It's so much like taxes, I don't think they'd be able to resist ya know ;)

/Sorry but I don't think having Green and Purple edibles on my plate constitutes the "new patriotism".

Littledogg 2008-07-06 04:55:40 AM
That whole article was a waste since everything in it was either rumor or innuendo. There seemed to be few facts which could be because of secrecy or because of the Democratic parties disorganization. The lack of facts could also be because the reporter sucks or because there just isn't a story here.

Atillathepun:Actually, if you weren't an idiot, you'd know that it does. In vegetables and fruits, colors often signify the presence of certain nutrients/antioxidents. Orange - beta caroten. Red - lycopene. And so on.

I know everyone has a knee jerk reaction to cock punch McCainDemocrat for any and all comments he makes, but in this case I think your attack on him is a bit much. The information in the article regarding food requests caught me as a bit odd as well. If your goal is to have a party catered with food that is high in calcium or vitamin c etc.. it would make sense to ask them for foods that provide them. What the convention organizers are doing is requesting food in different colors for the sake of color itself and that is a bit weird and the point that McCainDemocrat was making. I think we can agree there is a difference between saying i want something high in calcium and getting milk, and i want something white and getting milk.

I was curious if they have picked a lineup for speakers and events yet. If anyone has found this information in a real news article I would be grateful for the link.

So I know that in politics these days, and on Fark, people are just waiting and biting nails for articles like this so that they can bash the other side. "Look! They spend too much money!" "Look, they did something foolish!" "This proves...something, but they look stupid!"

But that aside.

This kind of thing is a problem for the entire political culture. It isn't limited to Democrat or Republican, it's a guilt that both share equally. Bullshiat unnecessary spending is a problem everywhere, and this sort of thing just typifies it all.

But personally, I blame the entertainment culture we live in. These days you aren't considered attractive until you reach a near unattainable level of beauty. Everything has to look pretty and glitzy and glamorous.

It sucks, but I have the feeling that if either party just showed up to some arena and hung a few signs, they'd get laughed at and lose points, and possibly an election.

But it's exactly what we should do.

Democrats are personifying at the moment of this article, but the Republicans will do it soon enough. We should spend the bare minimum for anything superficial, to save the money for the stuff that matters.

Of course, congress are in Washington for less than a hundred days a year, so who am I kidding? This is just wasted air (well finger-energy, really...and we all know where that could be going).

Everything is televised, everything is scrutinized. And Americans have this nasty habit of basing their political opinions on superficial things. So how can the Democrats not spend a shiatton of money for something like this.

/btw, if the Democrats are over budget, it just means the Republicans had a larger budget...they're not skimping on this crap either

Well in their defense they are union contractors...

Atillathepun:Actually, if you weren't an idiot, you'd know that it does. In vegetables and fruits, colors often signify the presence of certain nutrients/antioxidents. Orange - beta caroten. Red - lycopene. And so on.

Well, in his defense (god I can't believe I'm doing this) they didn't really need to say that they needed to have "caterers provide food in "at least three of the following five colors: red, green, yellow, blue/purple and white." Garnishes could not be counted toward the colors. No fried foods would be allowed. Organic and locally grown foods were mandated, and each plate had to be 50 percent fruits and vegetables.".

No fried food? At all? Stupid. Make it a percentage of all food offered makes more sense, I'll bet the local Mickey D's are gonna rake in the profits. All local organic produce? In Denver? In August? Good luck with that (man what I wouldn't give to be a farmer just outside of Denver in two months, I'd be gouging the hell out of them. Supply and demand and all that). While I understand why they would like to have these things they should be saying that local produce is first then you can go farther away if the prices go above X (where X is the standard price plus inflation for the same product) or go non-organic local and when that supply is used up do the same as above.

Here's the thing. I really hope that they don't renovate that place, I just bought season tix to the Avs (suck it, haters) and I don't want my view screwed up because of some convention. Now I know it sounds silly that I would be worried about my two seats out of 18,000 but goddamnit! This is how I feel about this whole convention. Sure, it brings cash to the area. But bark you Hickenlooper for bringing this shiat here. I love this town and all these out of state D-bags are threatening to riot here, renovate my arena, make me get up an hour-and-a-half earlier than usual so I can walk to work instead of taking the bus (because it will be full of Tent State assholes and really farking slow) and basically fark the city that I love. My hotel is also a regional conference center, and here's a problem we run into frequently - The contact people for the function will have a plan all drawn out about how they would like everything set up, all the way down to, yes, the color of the food (weddings are the worst, but we also had a sales gathering where it was an issue... for around 925 people). They will bring this plan to our Event Planners with an idea that it should cost X amount. Problem: costs in Nashville, Atlanta, Cincinnati, and Charlotte are usually different from here, and they will usually leave some things off the plan (for example, gun shows require a police officer to be present at all times) that they were not aware that they needed. Our Planners are usually able to work out the differences (we are #1 for a reason!), but other venues in the area (I'm thinking of one in particular in Johnson City) have accepted agreements without planning all the way through, then have a million things to take on at the last minute, and half the time what they wind up with is something thrown together at the last minute... and it looks it. All because someone saw money without realizing the work involved.

I have no doubt this is close to what is happening in Denver. That silly twit Wyeth showed up with a bunch of plans, and rather than take a critical look at them in a timely manner, the city convention planners just thought of the money and prestige Denver would accrue, and failed to plan properly. They even threw a few wrenches of their own (that no-fried-foods, 3-colors-to-a-plate thing was a local idea).

Ah, well. They still have about 7 weeks to get ready. Hopefully, they'll drop the whole "form over function" mentality and get it together.

But I'm not gonna bet on it.

While I will be the first to stand up and scream about the Democrats' fiscal incompetence, the Republicans have driven the dollar into the basement and more than likely tanked our economy for years to come. Naturally, you'll blame this on the Democrats - because the truth is something you would probably burst a blood vessel over if it ever entered your consciousness.
