Who wants to get with me and start the Farkistan Benevolent Society to apply for this? It says you have to be a non-profit that would maintain it for recreational purposes... I can see Fark HQ/BatCave being there off the coast.

We could even require the Coasties on staff be Farkers to get in the door.

Why is there no picture of it with the article?

Because a GIS turns up umpteen different pics than the small crappy one they would have put in the article. Including a nice hi-res one too.

Lighthouses are maintenance nightmares. I had to take care of a small one for a summer. Nothing works ever. All the salt air and no corners.

Maybe because these things are more than a hundred years old? I get that salt air and water is capable of some amazing corrosion, but we build boats and stuff all the time along the coast, and they work for a long period of time.

Honestly, the best thing would probably be to take it offline for about a year (temporarily move the beacon part offshore to a boat or something). Rip out the interior, rebuild everything, and proof it against the elements.

Fenwick is where the Hepburn summer house was, as in Katharine Hepburn's family. I don't know if the home is still there - I presume it was sold as part of the estate after Miss Hepburn died, and possibly it was torn down as it was rather decrepit.

Well, it is 70 years old or so, built in wartime (or just before - IIRC the original was blown away by the 1938 Hurricane)....

They did this with Penfield Light (a mile or so off the coast of Fairfield CT). The town bought it for $1. Not sure what we intend to do with it. Apparently it's going to be almost impossible to bring it up to modern safety standards, so the chances are that we'll just treat it as a museum piece - no admission to the public. It's still better than scrapping it, though.

I spend summers near a beach, and just about every year, my guitar needs a new electronics setup. Salt air eats away at the shiat. I should just get an acoustic.

Do I have to move it?

Is there some Historical society type group going to pounce,
if I try to paint it or give an upgrade?

I just got back from the lighthouse at St. Augustine, FLA, so I am really getting a kick out of these replies.

"The station is still a working lighthouse, with an automated green light flashing about every six seconds, run by the U.S. Coast Guard."

Uh if the property is still being used to prevent ships from crashing into rocks, it doesn't sound like "excess property" that needs to be gotten rid of...

blick [TotalFark] 2008-07-06 12:13:53 AM
i landed there a few times with my boat.
it's a fantastic structure but very very badly in need of care.
long island sound can be gorgeous, and at the same time dangerous as hell with new england weather, and the tidal currents.
rebuilding and living in it could prove to be very difficult due to it being on the national historic register. the regulations involving structures on those lists are maddening.
beautiful place tho'.

It's a good thing they aren't asking the buyer to move it. That linked photo is of the simple crossing of the North Cove channel and the light in question is 'way down at the end of the breakwater sticking due south off the point.

Penfield Light wouldn't get scrapped just for the sole reason that Penfield Reef runs from the light to the shore. My previous job before moving to Italy was a steamship agent. Also had a house on Lantern Point. I remember a few times that some morans decided to cruise on the shore side of Penfield light. Can you guess what happened?

Tillmaster 2008-07-06 08:49:54 AM
Free Pub Actually they were thinking of demolishing the building and replacing it with a simple fixed light on a tower.

Yeah, the reef gets a few victims every year. Fortunately it's gravel rather than granite.
