I can't help but be reminded of Penn & Teller's petition demanding that the UN declare America to be "#1" and that "our landscapes are more majestic than any other landscape", among other things.

If bacon is not on there, then the list of cultural treasures is meaningless.

jekostas 2008-07-05 07:23:59 PM
Ya know, it probably should be there, if not the wine. It's a defining part of French culture.

UNESCO liked the food, but hated the service.

It seems bizarre (if not arrogant and racist) that the UN determines what the best parts of *your* culture is, and how *your* culture is to be defined and judged.

Perhaps they could add the Corndog or the Funnel Cake to UNESCO's list.

The French take food very seriously, and every corner restaurant has excellent food. That cannot be said of other places, even if tastes may vary as to where food is best.

Pegasus_CAG 2008-07-05 07:34:16 PM
The UN is probably just reluctant to grant any culture a place on the list when that culture only has twenty years of life left in it.

That's pretty subjective. While I prefer Italian food, French cuisine has some pretty good recipes. I'm sure you could find someone on Fark who feels your favorite cuisine is crap.

Personally, I like BBQ and Mexican food a lot. My european acquaintances think bbq is garbage and my Chinese coworkers find Mexican food to be a crime against nature.

thisisntnamtherearerules 2008-07-05 07:39:55 PM
I have never understood what the big deal was about French food. I mean yeah, the food is good, but to me does not stand out over any other country's food as being particularly good. French food is fairly varied, just because there are so many regions, but nothing stands out to me as that great. The food tastes good and is usually well prepared, but the recipes dont really jump out at you.

Not everybody likes spicy food.

But yes, french cuisine should be considered as something important, not as cultural treasure, but just something really really awesome.

Don't most cultures' food partly define them?

kzp7 2008-07-05 07:44:12 PM
It seems odd to me that a list that is suppose to include important aspects of a given culture should not include food. Every culture includes unique dishes. To include a cultural dance but not a cultural food seems arbitrary.

Is there a "French people are lame and eat bad food" trifecta in play"

lelio 2008-07-05 07:46:29 PM
For Michelin-starred chef Gerard Cagna, UNESCO's recognition would "allow us to keep alive a fundamental part of our culture."

Because you wouldn't be serving up French food otherwise? Why does a Michelin starred chef need approval from some nebulous organization that the food he is serving is okay?

Hannibal222 2008-07-05 07:48:53 PM
If they approve French cuisine, a few other things should be approved:

San Francisco Sourdough
Humboldt County Weed
New Jersey Smog
Southern California sense of entitlement

etc.

Making a comment about the UN and France is too easy.

Guess France will have to "give up" their wish to have this added. They should just "throw up their hands" and "surrender" to the wishes of UNESCO.

/yes, you're right, it is too easy.
//I feel really dirty now.

mikaloyd 2008-07-05 07:52:11 PM
Unesco's reach exceeds it's grasp. It is pretty much impossible to save transitory unique occurances like Carnivale, or a ballet, or a meal as a treasure for future generations. You might well try to re-enact or reproduce any of these events, and you might do a good job most times. But you cannot relive a moment.

Unesco should stick to saving objects and documents for future generations. They will have better success at it and will ebtertai fewer wacky requests from the French wasting their time and resources.

C'est execrable!

This actually sucks. Food should absolutely be added to the list, especially since globalization is gradually wearing away a lot of unique local food. What would the American South be without poor boys, brisket, and grits?

I don't understand it.

Had dim sum at a restaurant specialising in Northern Chinese style. Now, there is a cuisine worthy of protection. I intend to protect it myself, especially once it's on my plate.

My fellow Americans,

Travel through Normandy. They like Americans there and the food is amazing. You can stop at the crappiest roadside hole-in-the-wall place in the crappiest town in Normandy, order a grilled cheese sandwich, and it will be the best god damned grilled cheese sandwich you'll every eat in your life.

The food is amazing, the people are nice, the sights are quite something.

Just don't use toilets in public places. We all know that bathrooms can be unsanitary places and the French are out to prove it.

WhyteRaven74 [TotalFark] 2008-07-05 08:23:09 PM
The French are willfully trying to extinguish three languages and cultural identities, perhaps they should learn a bit about preserving culture, before wanting their's preserved.

The defining features you're looking for here is called pretentiousness and elitism -- as these are really stand-out traits of French culture. They just regularly use food as one of their chosen mediums to convey this.

That made me giggle. It drives me crazy when I hear people say poor boy instead of po boy. Yea, they are both right, but ugh, sounds ridiculous.
