Inappropriate to even consider reopening at this time! Miss Liberty should remain closed until American gets back!

I've been up to the top of the crown and it isn't worth it. You spend an hour and a half going up steep stairs in a closed space with no insulation for a 30 second look out the windows before you're shoved back down the stairs.

Thank you! It is a complete waste of time. You also neglected to mention that you are either staring at someones ass or the infuriating graffiti on the walls the entire way up to the top.

You're much better off riding the Staten Island Ferry than going through the hell that awaits all who visit the actual island.

I just went to the Statue of Liberty a week ago, the amount of security to enter the base of the statue is staggering. I've never seen more sophisticated bomb-sniffing or metal detecting equipment anywhere. It also took about an hour of waiting in line to get in there.

Sounds like Space Mountain, but I'd do it again.

I thought the crown had always been open to the public. There is also a stairway going up to the torch but that hasn't been open to the public for a long time.

rka 2008-07-05 06:35:59 PM
I expected it to be bigger.

Having been to the crown once, i have to say it's not all that exciting. All the movies you've seen that have scenes in the crown (think X-men/Ghostbusters 2) show it as being a much larger space than it actually is. In reality it's an agonizingly slow climb up a narrow winding staircase so you can stand on a 4 foot long platform and look out the window for a few seconds before doing it all in reverse.

That being said, I'm glad I had the opportunity to do it. And I'd probably do it again. It's the friggin' Statue of Liberty, for cryin' out loud!

/just make the stairs better before they re-open it.
//I'd LOVE to be able to go to the torch.

My family used to live in the Statue of Liberty. We had to move out once we filled the head with garbage.

If you look carefully under the toga, you can tell the statue was not born female.

I'm glad I got to go to the top of the torch when I was a kid back in the 70s. Maybe to an adult it's "not all that" but when I was a kid I thought it was pretty exciting.

Never got to the top of the WTC, though.

How would they be able to make the crown ADA-compliant? I don't think there's an elevator in there.

I did many many years ago. It is exactly as you would imagine. Very tight, very obstructed views.

More or less just that you did it was all that good about it.

Everyone raise your hand who has actually missed not being able to climb all the way up into Liberty's crown, torch or whatever.

Yeah, I thought so.

Jgok [TotalFark] 2008-07-06 03:57:38 AM
Meh, I made the climb back in the 80's... It was pretty much as described by others... 2 hours of sweltering heat pressed between obnoxious tourists for a 30-second peek out of a window.

The Empire State building was better. They didn't have the "safety barriers" back then, so you could even look over a railing down at the street below.

As for the ADA thing, I'm pretty sure there's a way around the elevator requirement when you're talking about historical monuments built before a certain time period.

Links:I usually just steal a chopper and jump out at the crown.

When I was at the Statue last week, there were two military choppers hot-dogging it in the harbor and around the Statue of Liberty. I'm not sure what the point of the exercise was, I know that it was unnecessary and scary to have them buzz the statue and the ferries carting people to the island. Their conduct was the opposite of what I expected.

k4thrynnn 2008-07-06 09:01:37 PM
Yeah, it's really not worth it. I went to the statue a few months before Sept. 11th with my girl scout troop, and I all I remember is it was really crowded, hot & smelly, and i had to pee really bad. I don't even know if I ended up looking out the crown because it was such a windy day we were rocking back and forth.

I think I cried a little.

/atleast I went to the top, unlike most of the sissy girls in my troop.

=)
