Dad: 'I can't wait for my stimuls check! i'm gonna get a new 8 wood.'

Me: 'um...you've been unemployed for 3 years now and been sleeping on my couch for a year.'

D: 'so?'

M: 'so - why do you think you deserve a stimulus check?'

D: 'Hey, I *earned* that check! And I can do whatever I want with it!'

M: 'yeah...but...you were unemployed...'

D:'doesn't matter. See, the government said I get one, so I get one.'

M: 'Aren't you a registered Republican?'

D: 'What does that have to do with anything?'

M: '*sigh* nothing much, I guess. Enjoy your new 8 wood.'

D: 'thanks!'

I haven't gotten one, and have made no plans that will fall through if I fail to get one. Frankly, I think the whole "stimulus" idea is silly.

That being said, the guy in the article is hardly a deadbeat. Stories like his were my inspiration in life to live "off the grid" as much as humanly possible in terms of social security and other gubmint shiat.

The gubmint is always right, just like its inventor, de debbil.

No sign of mine yet, either. I think I finally submitted a tax return chaotic enough to either break the IRS completely or, more likely, cause my first audit. Joy! In any case I'm totally proud, and it is worth the whole stimulus check to me to think that I somehow caused the IRS trouble.

Yeah my neighbors on disability were biatching because they didn't get one. Umm, yeah guys, you get more by sitting around than I get working. It's time I got something back.

JERRY: Well, a person that gives something and then they're dissatisfied and
they wish they had, had never uh...

WINONA: And?

JERRY: ...give, given it to the person that they originally gave it to.

WINONA: You mean like, an Indian giver?!

JERRY: I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with that term.

I'm biatching because they didn't give dependents checks... and the extra money promised for the parents of dependents stopped at age 17.

Hardworking college students? Apparently the government does give a shiat about you, even if you pay the taxes.

/Not surprised.

Before the evil child support-squandering biatch stories pour in (the kind you hear 4 times a night bartending) She doesn't get enough money for her time, her youth- forget the cost of what the child consumes- you're paying not to be a parent. You don't leave work early to take them to the doctors, you don't have to watch the clock when you go out with friends, you get to experience nothing but the best parts of parenthood. If you're fighting for custody, of course that doesn't apply. And yes there are some deadbeat moms.

What we really need to do is find a way to force people to spend their stimulus checks. Why do people with savings accounts hate America?

My eTrade account pulls 3.3% right now I think. The idea of locking it away in a CD for 12 months in order to get an extra .09% -- if I'm lucky -- isn't worth it.

A lot of college students are not getting them either because their parents claim them on taxes, however, their parents aren't getting one either because their kids make too much money during the summer.

Good lord, find a better place to put your money.

My credit union is offering savings accounts with 5% interest on a $100 minimum balance. Beats the hell out of the .75% interest most banks offer on savings accounts.

eddyatwork:Who the hell has a savings account anymore?

I actually have three, all with ING. They're all just their normal savings accounts, not CDs or anything. They are arranged as follows:

- Short-to-medium term savings. (from a few days up to 3 years)
- Long term savings. (Greater than 3 years, to help balance out my investments in the stock and bond market.)
- "Shiny Stuff" savings. (Most for shooty-related stuff. A new CZ-75 pistol and a full-auto Uzi are on the list for some of the cash in this account.)

While the interest from a savings account won't make one rich, it helps as a hedge against inflation, and can be a bit more stable than stocks and other volatile investments.

I dunno. The reason for this is to stimulate the economy supposedly so why not just give a check to everyone regardless of income or any other BS. They spend the money. The economy make a slight rebound. We all live in harmony forever.

Okay, if the stimulus checks were designed to stimulate the economy by putting more money into it, then doesn't keeping the checks go against that plan?

it's 5 hours 'till end of shift and there ain't much going on. Nobody put program changes into the system this weekend, so everything is working fairly well. that makes for a long, long weekend. so it's either fark, answer your questions, or do some online training courses.

Great Janitor:Okay, if the stimulus checks were designed to stimulate the economy by putting more money into it, then doesn't keeping the checks go against that plan?

Well, if you read the article, they said that over half of the intercepted stimulus checks were for unpaid child support. So presumably that will just get diverted to someone else and do the same thing. As for people who owe back taxes or whatever, well, it seems pretty fair that the government would get to keep their checks. Since it's a small amount relative to the size of the overall stimulus program, I doubt any negative effect is too bad.

stimulus checks were not designed to stimulate the economy, but to prolong the stimulating paychecks of the congresspeople who authorized them. so you can do whatever you want with them as long as you continue to vote D and/or R in november.

I, too, am upset because dependents didn't get a stimulus check. The dependents are more than likely to use the check to buy stuff and pump it into the economy.

That must be an intro-rate, or something. No one is offering a normal rate that high right now, because the Fed has lowered rates to the point that it wouldn't be profitable if there weren't some catch.

Name and city / state of the credit union? I'll join as long as it's not limited to the first few hundred / thousand, and isn't a come-on rate.

One of my local credit unions has a similar offer. I think they're advertising something like 5.9%. The catch is that it's 5.9% on the first $500, and 1.49% on the remaining balance. Credit Unions used to be much more competitive than banks. Nowadays, I have to be willing to give up 24-hour customer service AND a large ATM network AND decent online access AND being able to get money out of a branch AND convenient locations AND convenient hours in order to get a 0.049% higher interest rate. No thanks.

Whiner. Mine went to back taxes I have been paying on so I was thrilled that I got a huge amount of that basically forgiven via the stimulus check paying it down.

I still think the stimulus checks are a stupid idea.

Mnemia 2008-07-05 07:21:53 PM
MIguy:Ok I'll do it. Bullshiat!

He probably just didn't read the fine print. Either it expires after 3 months or something or there's a cap on the amount of money you can put in. It's simply not fiscally possible for anyone to offer that kind of rate at the moment, except as a marketing teaser.

Show us your Marx [TotalFark] 2008-07-05 07:22:57 PM
And on top of that, what group of people are better suited to frivilously spend money than the 18-24 demographic? I dont get it. Maybe I am just bitter
