In my freshman year at college there was a girl in one of my classes who thought that she could do this. She did a presentation on it. It was horrible. She pretty much sounded like she was dying.

Does this guy have a second job doing voice-overs for Japanese movies?

New hotness? Are you time-delay posting this from 1999?

Not to be snide... oh screw it... The headline says Older Hotness. I think you should probably read more carefully before snarking.

I saw Huun Huur Tu (new window) perform a few years ago. If you think one Tuvan throat singer is cool, you should hear four of them with their bizarre traditional instruments. It was awesome.

//bought a CD.

Peter Frampton sucks. This guy on the other hand sounds like he may have swallowed some bag pipes. Nice find.

On a mix CD I sent out to friends recently I laid a Kongar-ol Ondar track next to an Ol' Dirty Bastard song. It was a meeting of the 'Ol's, so to speak, and worked surprisingly well. The album that Dave mentions, Back Tuva Future, is really pretty entertaining, and even features a few tracks sampling Richard Feynman chanting and drumming. Feynman was fascinated with Tuva but never got to visit before he died. As Tuva was in the Soviet Union at the time, it was a little difficult to access.

This guy was awesome in those police academy movies.

It took me a minute to realize that he was making the weird flutey noise as well as grunting the base note of it. (I don't mean bass, I mean base.)

I wanna learn how to do that.

I saw this guy perform on a Bela Fleck and the Flecktones DVD. He's a funny little man.

You should hear this guys cover of La Grange.

Anyone interested in this should check out Genghis Blues, about bluesman Paul Peña and his learning the art of Tuvan throat-singing. Marvelous documentary.

Also, you might check out Bela Fleck & the Flecktones' Live at the Quick DVD, as siva mentioned. Some fun work from Ondar on there.

Great article here (new window) from Scientific American on Tuvan throat-singing, from Ted Levin, one of the foremost ethnomusicologists (his book, The Hundred Thousand Fools of God, is a terrific read, although it deals with Central Asian music and not Tuvan).

Yankees won, this got greenlit, and just saw the Gonzo documentary (pretty cool, saw some crazy newly released footage). One cool Saturday.

Yea, saw that. Really cool. Paul Peña wrote that song "Jet Airliner" that Steve Miller made a zillion dollars playing in the '70's.

Genghis Blues is an amazing documentary. It made me tear up. Kongar ol Ondar is great, but Huun Huur Tu (new window) is where it's at. I'm going to see them in Oklahoma City in November.

I've also taught myself to do a decent Tibetan style kargyraa and my sygyt is decent too. It took me about 6 months of practice to get the kargyraa down. I think it's the most fun to do as well.

The best part about Tuvan songs is they're generally about grass, rivers, or horses.

Blackbrain 2008-07-07 03:36:23 PM
Tuvan music is totally amazing. If you like Ondar and Huun Huur Tu, you should also catch Tyva Kyzy (new window) and see how the ladies do it.
