Belmar? Can't any of our decent towns get into the news?

Oh, wait...

Belmar is great...until all of Bergen county comes there for the summer. I agree the laws were stupid, but how are they going to combat obnoxious guidos now?

Belmar, sometimes called "Fort Lauderdale North" for its reputation as a raucous party enclave, has scrapped laws against giving the finger and requiring beer kegs to be registered.

The Founding Fathers may have been slave-owning hypocrites, but this doesn't deserve to be associated with their cause. Sometimes, due to being easily held more accountable, local government reflects the will of the people better than state or federal government can. Sometimes the people show that they are authoritarian.

Headline: NJ Party Town Relaxes Rules on Kegs, Rude Gestures

Article: One rule that's no longer on the books related to raising one's middle finger, or the many variants thereof. However objectionable it might be to some people, such a gesture is constitutionally protected free speech,

In other words they realized that if they didn't lift that ban a judge would be giving the finger to tax payers to pay for lawsuits.

I'm certain the Founding Fathers did have this in mind, less government intrusion into the interaction of the people. Isn't this the real idea behind democracy, not voting on ordinances or electing officials to legislate all of your decisions but a freedom to make your own decision?

Not that people necessarily pay attention to that.

At long last, someone is lifting a finger to slow the trend toward authoritarianism that has dominated the last seven years...okay much more than that, but especially them.

Wanna bet someone still gets hauled into jail on a public disturbance charge?

Considering how many of the Founding Fathers brewed beer at home? At least the kegger part would be near and dear to them.

I told a friend of mine yesterday, "I give the finger because it's free speech. If that's a misuse of the freedom of speech, then there is only one cure. More free speech."

Asako 2008-07-05 02:55:06 PM
Actually, I'm sure it is. More than a few of the founders drank beer and I'm sure a few of them were pot smokers as well.

i think the guy in the back braying into his cell phone is maybe the best part of that pic. he's making the same face a donkey makes when it's going "hee-haw! hee-haw!"

Banning the middle finger in New Jersey is like banning corn in Iowa, or horses in Kentucky, or stupidity in Florida.

obscene gestures

Vague definition? Yep. Free expression? Also yep.

If you don't want to be offended then shelter yourself. I am offended every time I hear that I'm not going to Heaven... as if we have proof that such a place even exists. Can I make it illegal for others to assert the notion?

How does that show that the people are authoritarian, if they -scrapped- two laws that restrict personal freedom?

Obviously some local laws are the exact opposite of that (Like dry counties) so it's not an invalid argument, just a bad example for it.

My funny Belmar story: One night back in '89, me and my friend Kenny spent the evening partying with some friends until the bars closed. Needing cigarettes, we went to the 7-11 on highway 71, and were in the middle of a line of 20 people. Kenny, who was behind me in line, then let loose the loudest fart that I had ever heard in public, and me being 1/2 drunk and stoned, found this to be the most hilarious thing that had ever happened. EVER. Tears were streaming down my face as I struggled to maintain some semblance of composure. I still chuckle thinking about it to this day.

/yes, I know I'm a moran
//farts are funny
///felt bad for the person behind Kenny though

"I'm not sure anyone even knew that making obscene gestures was illegal," Mayor Ken Pringle said.

This red hot screaming asshat is a mindless tyrant who, a couple of years ago had his storm troopers arrest a guy that mistook the mayor for a woman. The guy invited Mr. Mayor for a drink and got arrested for his trouble.

Ah yes, Belmar, the town that tried to shut down a local bakery that has been a fixture for decades as "blighted" as part of their downtown redevelopment plans. The bakery took the town to court and gave Belmar a big "fark you, just because we aren't Dunkin' doesn't mean we're blighted"

GoteamVenture 2008-07-05 04:18:00 PM
If i remember correctly...doesnt Belmar have a large Irish population around it? Cause im pretty sure as a wee lad in Monmouth County we went to Belmar for the st pattys day parade.
