We still don't know if Metallica's "thrashing" is any good yet.
For all we know, it could be Bob Rock legacy.

The band's manager, Carl Stubner, said the forthcoming album would recall the one-chord blues of ZZ Top's 1973 hit La Grange, rather than the glossy hard-rock the band is now known for.

Well, their more recent releases have already moved in that direction. Since I like ZZ Top, I hope that this is a good move for them.

Well, I took a leap of faith, I admit, with that choice...but I couldn't figure out a way to tie in Neil Diamond or the beat for 99 Problems, so Metallica seemed like a good choice.

And, yeah, as far as Linkin Park goes; I don't now how people blame Rick for that album sucking. IT'S LINKIN FRIGGIN PARK!!!! As sombody said earlier ya can't polish a turd.

You know, he did a lot of stuff before that. Like starting Def Jam, putting out RUN-DMC, the beastie boys. etc etc. he's a hero.

Sounds like they're going take the early classics like Pearl Necklace as use it as the foundation, but also give them a little bit of a modern edge. I'm anticipating songs about a Cleveland Steamer or a Rusty Trombone.

Is he going to magically make them not suck? It would've been better for all of us if they all died with Cliff. At least then they'd have remained Metal icons instead of becoming a terrible joke of their former selves.

There's MANY modern Metal bands that are much better than Metallica in their prime. Why do people cling to old tired musicians, praying they'll return to their glory days instead of opening their eyes to incredible music that is still being put out?

Anyway, I look forward to a Rubin-ZZ Top combo. No synths or sequencers.

Why didn't I get that memo??????

Yeah tell that to the 20 year old who had never heard of him, and likely never would have heard of him if he'd never hooked up with Rubin, who's standing in line at Hot Topic right now about to by a DOPE "Johnny Cash 'Man In Black'" tshirt.

InmanRoshi 2008-07-05 06:06:26 PM
I love Johnny Cash, but Good Lord Above do people deify him (usually the people who just own one Greatest Hits album). The fact is that while the guy undeniably put out some all time classics, but he also put out a lot of cheesy, commercial crap (see Johnny Cash Classic Christmas) trying to make a buck off the flavor du jour and had a lot of dead periods in his career. Rubin did help revitalize his career and introduce him to a new generation of fans.

We get it ... you're cool because you listen to Cash. Thanks for shouting it from the rooftops. Now go buy a Billy Joe Shaver album and really impress someone.

HaHA!
Nailed it!

I have weird and mixed feelings about Rubin in general.
Those three SLAYER records he produced are without a doubt the high water mark of American Metal music and they are pure masterpieces.(don't forget to give the band some credit too!)

I feel he ruined the album "Electric" by The CULT.
(check out a CULT record called "Manor Sessions" which is the pre-Rubin version and sounds more like their "Love" album)

I recently got the Neil Diamond record Rubin produced.
It is weird.
It is totally unlike Diamond but in some ways I think it kinda compliments his songwriting style. The production is sparse but it has an intimacy to it that I admire.

Didn't he blow off the mighty SLAYER to work on the new Metallica album? "Christ Illusion" is a completely rockin' disc, but the latest batch of Bob Seger covers and FM radio friendly disappointments lies at the bottom of the same pond as "Chinese Democracy".
In my opinion, Rick backed the wrong horse.

1) Your use of the term "cookie monster" just leads me to think you know nothing about metal.

2) I'm afraid bands like Cynic and Atheist are simply wasted on you.

3) Even if you are a limited metal listener who seems to think the genre ends at thrash, why not listen to good thrash? Metal Church slays Metallica (funny considering Sanitarium is a rip of a "Church" tune).
