DAMNIT. I became a US Citizen last year at Monticello, and had to listen to Sam freaking Waterston. And this lucky batch didn't just see the President, they shook hands and talked and took photos :(

Classy. I'm sure the people that were there to become citizens were impressed as well.

I'm sure Bush has now reconsidered the error of his ways based on those shouts from lonely, pathetic, self-centered idiots who think any platform they can get to air their political worldview is justifiable.

Gosh, I would hope so. There are plenty of countries where those people would be taken away, never to be seen again. The fact that they weren't (at least as far as we know) speaks much about our country, don't you think? I mean, that's the whole idea of America.

No, because they think being disruptive at a ceremony honoring other people is an appropriate forum for their petty ax-grinding. Just because you have a right doesn't excuse you from making yourself a pimple on the ass of society when you exercise it.

it is about him. it's about disgracing him in front of the world.
it's about shunning him to the point that he's not invited to any more speaking engagements for fear of an uprising. Govt doesn't fear the people anymore. The people fear the govt and that's got to change.

You have no right to disrupt public events, none.

You cannot act like this in a restaurant nor at a graduation ceremony.

Had these protesters stood silently, perhaps holding a sign that did not block anyone's view, I might have considered this as being different.

Of course, one would have to question how these people even gained admission to this event. President Bush's staff has had a near rock solid history of making sure that protesters do not gain access to anywhere the president is speaking and these protesters were dressed pretty damn obviously to be missed.

Anyone else smell an artificially created media event?

No, it's not. BDS is no excuse for rudeness. Janet Reno spoke at my law school graduation, and while I was no fan of hers at all, I would have been pretty pissed if someone disrupted my graduation to heckle her while she spoke (and political differences aside, it was a nice speech).

That's because conservative asshats are the natural extension of tune in, turn on, and drop out. Hippies grew up, retained their same values of grandiose pseudo-religious worship of the self and voted for Reagan in droves. The Man that was keeping them down, conveniently became Bureaucrats -- and entire function of Government became the enrichment of the most selfish.

Gee, somehow I don't think it would be realistic to expect Bush to set aside a time and place to address the grievances of these Americans. Under that consideration, they were completely within their right to address him directly. After all, it's been about 5 years since the war began...so, I think it was safe for them to assume that he would continue ignoring the issue and thus it would be up to them to choose the time and place of listing their grievances. As I'm sure you'll agree, Bush's people tend to vet their crowds to ensure a receptive audience. Nothing wrong with that, but then there's also nothing wrong with spoiling the makeup of a vetted crowd.

Between attacking people who are speaking their mind about legitimate grievances and remaining silent about the guy who started the whole Iraq thingy...well, maybe your scrutiny is slightly misplaced. Not much point in attacking protesters, they have not and could never cost the country as much as any politician.

Criticize those in power first, and the powerless never. I mean, that's just the practical approach to democracy, isn't it? What's the benefit in defending presidents against the criticism provided by a politically under represented bloc of the population?

it disgusts me to see that the president had to come in to contact with people that disagree with him. We almost made it through 8 years before it happened. Usually his Dads' yes men do a pretty good job of insulating him from such a world. Why should little George have his feelings hurt while hes having such a blast playing president in his daddy's chair?

THIS. My commencement speaker was then-president of the World Bank James Wolfensohn, and of course the douchebag holier-than-thou campus activist groups had to protest and heckle during the speech. It's not like we had any input in selecting the commencement speaker, and on a day when some families have flown thousands of miles to be with their kids and celebrate the end of 4 long-ass years in college, they had to be subjected to this. Of course, it rained anyway, and the chairs were outside, so it mostly sucked regardless.

/Colleges should be forced by law to invite awesome commencement speakers.
//Went to a friend's graduation where Wynton-freaking-Marsalis was the speaker, he gave an awesome speech and then played trumpet solos for like 10 minutes
