Mark Farner is playing the GM Riverfront (free) concert on Friday, July 11 with Mitch Ryder. I've seen him at The Knob without GFR and I saw GFR last year without him on the Riverfront. Can't go wrong either way. Great concerts. And since I work at the RenCen, I think I'll stay for this one.

Farner was hawt back in the day (according to, ahem, the videos) - he was built like an Indian brave, with long hair flowing down that sinewy back of his. (Can girls 'fap'?)

I've seen old biker types bring their kids to the concerts and have to hold back the tears. Just a damn good band.

Coolest thing on the Riverfront is when they do "Closer to Home" and the boats pull up and blow their horns.

Say what you will about The Motor City, but there ain't nothing cooler than being Downtown (it's really pretty at night with the lights from Windsor and the Ambassador Bridge and Daytwa), at the GM Plaza and on the River on a hot July night with a cool breeze blowing, a beer in one hand and singing and dancing to "Locomotion".

I saw Mitch Ryder one year for free - he was playing literally down the block from my house during the Woodward Dream Cruise. We have a classic car parade and 12 Mile (that's 4 miles north of the famous 8 Mile for those unfamiliar) is blocked off from traffic, and after the parade, there's a little street festival. Mitch was there - loved seeing my 70-year old mom jamming and shaking a leg (now 77, we were just out in the yard and I had the car radio blasting ZZ Top. When I left, she said, "leave the car"!) Mom was always cool about rock-n-roll. And she loves Kid Rock (but wishes he'd "tone down the language").

There's The Beatles
There's Crosby, Stills, Nash and Sometimes Young
And then there's Grand Funk Railroad

/I'm on the live Concert for Bosnia album
//ex-husband tried smoking Chiquitas when he was in the Navy. It didn't work out so well.
///say nice things about Detroit
//What other city has done more for music other than Liverpool?
/Sigh. I have to mow my lawn now so you can get off it

One of the funniest things I've ever heard is Mike Mills and Peter Buck talking about this song in an interview. Mills says that as a rock star, it's just commonplace to be standing around in the post office and have women walk up to say to him "C'mon dudes, let's get it on!"

//and competent drumming.

Is it wrong that this song always made me wildly proud to be an American? fark yeah, man.

Produced by Todd Rundgren, too, who pretty much produced everyone at some point.

Wasn't the Michigan State basketball team that won the National Championship a few years ago made up largely of a core of players from Flint?

I worked just down the hall from Don Brewer's wife for many years. Nice people, he and his wife, Sunny.
