Just wanted to check to make sure Axl was #1.

Wasn't there a famous case of Sid Vicious getting twatted by a fan in Austin or somewhere? And some wag trotted out that old favourite "It's the first case of the fan hitting the shiat" ?

Can't we find some video of that? Or something?

skribble 2008-07-04 09:09:15 AM
was at the skid row show in massachusetts in '89 when sebastian hucked an empty Jack bottle at some chick in the crowd. good times.

Where are all the punks at?

Henry Rollins (new window)

Or Doyle from the Misfits: "Various members of the audience threw bottles and cans at the bands, and one fan repeatedly tried to hit Doyle in the head with beer cans. After five songs, both Arthur and Rocky Caiafa jumped into the audience to stop him. During the fight that ensued, Doyle attempted to use his guitar to pull the main instigator of the brawl towards the stage, accidentally breaking the guitar over his head. A riot broke out, and The Misfits quickly left the stage." Link

Or Kurt Cobain (new window)

The first thing I thought of was the Sebastian Bach thing. Of course, there's also Pete Townshend clocking Abbie Hoffman into the pit at Woodstock as well.

Good times...good times!

Ron Artest (new window) approves.

RTFA...the author is the facts wrong on the Kiss clip. It was Peter Criss who got the laser shown in his face and it was Paul who called out the audience member.

Sheesh!

whatshisname 2008-07-04 10:10:06 AM
How about Roger Waters who had a melt down and spit on a fan in Montreal in 1977? Good show.

mud_shark 2008-07-04 10:25:54 AM
What, no Altamont concert Jefferson Airplane vs. Hell's Angels?

Marty Balin gets knocked out and then Paul Kantner exchanges words with an Angel.

And I've Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes make the KISS exchange look completely wussified.

I also saw a nice little exchange (don't even remember what band now) where some idiot was trying to start a mosh-pit at a show where such BS was completely inappropriate and the band demanded that the guy be escorted out (which he was to the cheers of everyone else in the audience).

If I was at that Reading show with Panic at the Disco, I would have bought that dude who drilled the lead singer a replacement beer. Damn shame to waste a perfectly good beer on emo.

Best I've seen in person was a Steve Stevens "baseball-swing" a la Keith Richards. I was present for both the Alice Cooper and Teenage Head riots in Toronto, but I don't know if they fit into this list...

Came looking for The Replacements, but was disappointed. Saw them twice and both times there was a lot of back and forth between the stage and the crowd. One show was over in 20 minutes when a bottle shattered on Bob's guitar.

Never get tired of watching Keith take off the guitar to casually hit the dude rushing the stage.

First thing I thought of, too. Seeing as how that led to the creation of one of the most famous albums of all time, you think that would have made the list.

What? No one's gonna mention Tori Amos's recent confrontation with those two girls?

Yeah, I went there.

AXL ROSE INCIDENT EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT

I was at the Guns and Roses riot concert. They had already played for about an hour and a half. Axl did ask for security to "get that guy", but he only waited a few seconds before he jumped into the audience to beat the video recording fan down.

What is not mentioned is that the Riverport ampitheatre, now Verizon, did nothing to improve the sitution. It had only been open for about a week and apparently didn't have its procedures in place. When Axl and the band walked off, nobody came over the P.A. and said things like, "Stay calm, the band will be back on". Likewise, we were not told that the concert was over and that we should go home.

The response from the ampitheatre was...nothing.

This went on for about 45 minutes. Drunk fans grew restless. In two places fires were set on the lawn seat area. Still no response from those in charge. Things were obviously getting out of control.

The first official response - before anything was said over the P.A. about the situation, or what we should do, police and security came onto the stage and used fire hoses on the crowd. Somehow the crowd got ahold of one of the fire hoses and drove the police off the stage. They also used it to knock down one of the big tv screens.

Only after all this did the ampitheatre get on the P.A. and say we're trying to get the band to go back on, stay calm.

By this time a lot of people had left, so those remaining in the lawn area moved forward to the seats to see the band better if they played some more.

About 30 minutes went by with no Guns and Roses and then things got really crazy. People began ripping the seats from the concrete and passing them forward so others could throw them on the stage. Eventually people jumped on stage and began stealing equipment. I realized that if I stayed much longer I might get arrested, or at least detained, so I left. On my way out I saw fans carrying a Les Paul, and a hi-hat stand. I think at least one Marshall cabinet made its way out, too.

Honestly, I think the poor measures used by the venue had more to do with the riot than Axl.

a) every QOTSA show
b) "Daphne and Celeste" - dear god that video was horrible.
c) ACDC - it is pretty funny that Angus kind of asked for the 2nd one. then he "tweaked the guy's nose"?
d) "Jay Reatard" what a stupid name. pretty good shot though
e) Shannon Hoon pissing on the audience?

Danzig getting knocked out by support band singer - NSFW language (new window)

Always wanted to see the footage of the Ryan Adams gig where some kid kept on shouting for Bryan Adams tunes and Ryan getting pissed off and getting security to chuck the guy out and refund his ticket.

Or the one where Roger Waters spits at a fan.

Or the gob from the crowd that went into Joe STrummer's mouth giving him Hepatitis B!

Farkers show me the footage!

Thanks for mentioning this, I never knew; the more you know!

From wiki: 1979's epic rock opera The Wall, conceived by Waters, dealt with the themes of loneliness and failed communication, which were expressed by the metaphor of a wall built between a rock artist and his audience. The deciding moment in which to conceive The Wall was during a concert in Montreal, Canada in which Roger Waters spat at an audience member who had been shouting unhelpful comments and requesting songs throughout the show. It was this point where Waters felt the alienation between audience and band.

Not fan related but I've always thought this one on stage was a bit funny.

Kris Novoselic throws his guitar in the air and fails catching it properly and gets knocked senseless, stumbling about the stage before leaving..

I saw Rollins at the Reading Festival many years ago. The guy was a bit intense.

You could hear the sudden drop in crowd noise when he related a lengthy story about some girl getting raped and how he thought it was not funny.

Way to get the crowd going, Henry!

What was it the reporter who followed him said? Something along the lines of "I hope he dies before the point he decides to commit suicide, because he's going to take every mother farker he can with him."

Something like that. The world is a better place without him.

San Antonio, Randy's Rodeo. I can't say I remember it like it was yesterday, but I was there. And as noted, Sid whacked him with his bass. Beer cans of varying emptyness/fullness were flying at the stage through their entire set. I never got hit by one, but I would've felt better with a hardhat on.

What about Bjork slapping that report around?

List is full of fail.

At least someone posted about the Danzig kick ass.

No Green Day Billie Joe jumping off the stage onto the guy?

"Dame Elton John publicy rebukes fan for refusing to sit down" is what the list feels like.

SharkTrager 2008-07-04 05:52:34 PM
I was at a G'n'R show on the stadium leg of their tour with Metallica. Some asshole threw a beer can on the stage and Axl threatened to bail if it happened again. It didn't and, seriously, he went on to put on an amazing 2-hour set.

At the end he threw his still live mic a good 40 yards in to the crowd and you could hear it as it whistled through the air before hitting someone solidly in the head.

a tame one:

early '70's. Pine Knob Music Theatre, 30 miles N. of Detroit.
Here's where it gets weird.

The band: The Carpenters. The incident: Karen gets pissed at
drunk shouting at her from the front row. Drops the mike
ten seconds into the third song. G'night, folks, we're outta here.
Fans stream out equally as pissed.

/ ashamed to admit I was there

Devo, 1978, French TV.

Watch Bob 1 kick some French punk's head in while others rip the yellow suits off Mark and Jerry.

Rollins is by far the most intense performer i have ever seen. you got off light with him..his spoken words shows leave you drained at points and laughing your ass off at others. he in my mind is the best working artist of a generation. the guy leaves it all out there.

The Pete Townshend and Marty Balin incidents didn't involve fans. Abbie Hoffman was an uninvited AW and Balin was hit by a Hell's Angel "security guard".

Jeff Tweedy of Wilco, when some jerkhole from the audience made his way onstage, first dancing around, then tried to hug Tweedy (looked like he tried to grab his head) while he was singing. Tweedy understandably freaks out, stops singing, takes a swing at the dude and then puts his hands around the dude's neck, pushing him backwards until finally security removes the farker. Tweedy picks up right where he left off, and apologizes a short while later. I don't think any apology was owed.

MentalMoment 2008-07-05 01:00:37 AM
L7's Donita Sparks throwing her used tampon into the crowd at Reading should get mention for her... unique response to the audience.
