Uh, maybe to try to change their minds?

He has no idea on how to use money. So he's putting money into North Dakota and Utah, instead of trying to win in Pennsylvania or Ohio.

No way, it'll be McCain. There's a lot of old people in this country and a lot of bigots.

Obama will not win a majority of states, much less every state. You're nuts.

Obama doesn't have an infinite amount of money either. He spent $40M in Pennsylvania, and still lost. The most significant state win he had in the primaries was in Missouri. He lost Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Indiana, New Jersey, and numerous other states.

Obama's wasting his time. And the RNC is running new McCain ads in swing states.

I think it's great that he's reaching out to voters in states that don't even get visited by the Dems. When time gets tight, he'll focus his energies, but I think it's a good move.

In bizarro-Fark, danlpoon is railing on Barack Obama's campaign strategy of ignoring the states he won't win and instead focusing his energy on swing states.

I'm sure something along the lines of "Is Obama too elitist to care about the middle of the country" would be worked in there somehow.

Dinki [TotalFark] 2008-07-03 07:49:36 PM
Obama is very smart here- turn every state into a battleground, force McCain to spend money defending what should be sure things. McCain will be broke by October.

Obama doesn't really believe in "Red states" and "Blue states", he believes in the United States.

And then when you completely disprove him, as I did yesterday on his stance that Obama was closer to Clinton than McCain was to his party's nomination (along with side lies like "McCain only had 4%ish support at the time"), he'll make some half-assed rebuttal and then hope nobody else noticed.

JohnnyC:Obama doesn't really believe in "Red states" and "Blue states", he believes in the United States.

The 50-state strategy is helping get the Democratic party out of the doghouse. Not just Obama, but Dean has embraced the idea that the party shouldn't simply discount "red" states and assume that they can never be won. It's a great strategy, especially when you have the campaign cash like Obama does.

robsul82 [TotalFark] 2008-07-03 07:58:01 PM
And yeah, since we're talking about red states flipping, Quinnipiac has Obama leading in Ohio AND Florida, with a side dish of Rasmussen having Obama 5 points ahead in Montana.

The good doctor is looking pretty Goddamned smart at the moment.

And the best evidence of it working is when you look at congress. The Democrats have picked up Dennis Hastert's seat, a seat in rural Mississippi, and one in Louisiana. All very red districts where the GOP outnumbers the Dems by a large amount. But the Dems actually had the balls to true and win, and by golly gee they did.

Ron Paul isn't on the general election ballot. And the polls disagree with your 'not a fireball's chance' prediction.

Yeah, not sure this is a bad thing...in particular if he wins, he will not have dis-enfranchised a sector of his country.

McCainDemocrat 2008-07-03 09:05:24 PM
Obama spent $31M in March and $36M in April.

The only major contest for most of March (post 3/11/08) and almost all of April (until 4/22) was Pennsylvania. With $68M spent over 61 days, it's very reasonable to see that with 42 days between 3/11 and 4/22, Obama spent in excess of $40M on Pennsylvania.

clgrin 2008-07-03 09:07:53 PM
he doesn't need to even win these states... Western Democrats are becoming a new strong voting bloc and Obama has damn big coat-tails. And with all the flailing going in some of the more extreme ends of the party, moderate, populist, pro-gun dems are the kind of people Obama want's to move into Congress

Actually ND is split 2/3 Republican 1/3 Democrat. It's hardly a republican stronghold.

Uh, no...

Considering that the election is a formality at this point, and that he *is* going to win, he's seeding diplomacy, good will, and national unity for after the election.

After he wins, nobody will feel they were slighted or ignored during the campaign, and Obama will be able to tone down the partisanship that you right-wingers have used to trample long-standing American ideals.

Current Congressional delegation from North Dakota:

Sen. Kent Conrad (D). A Unitarian, for cryin out loud.
Sen. Byron Dorgan (D)
Rep. Earl Pomeroy (D - At Large)

The last election a Republican was sent to DC from North Dakota? That would be 19-flipping-80. Same year Reagan won. The first time.

Cultural ties to Minnesota. Touches two provinces that have had honest-to-God Socialist (NDP) governments in the last decade. Operate a state-owned bank and a state-owned grain mill. Leaders in renewable energy (wind turbine manufacture).

Yeah, North Dakota. Why not make the effort some time, people?
