I can't understand why French Prime Ministers do this and why some people in Quebec buy into it. They all seem to forget that France basically sold them to the British for sugar.

It boggles my mind that Quebec would ever want anything to do with France after that.

The Treaty of Paris was what actually made the result permanent, France wanted to keep other possessions, instead of Quebec and the British were more than happy to take 'em instead. All things considered, the British actually treated Quebec pretty good, especially in the realm of language, laws, and culture. Other former French possessions didn't fare so well.

I can see why the Prime Minister of a small city might make this mistake.

The French like to pretend. De Gaulle did this a few decades ago.

The Romans were pretty brutal to the Gauls when taking over France. France really shouldn't have any relations with Italy as a result.

I live in the national capital region of Canada. My francophone wife and I took a trip to Québec a couple years ago. Along the highway, we passed a sign that said "Welcome to the national capital region", so I started to get off the highway. My wife asked me why, and I said "we must be going the wrong way, we're back where we started". She didn't like that too much.

To be fair, if he was thinking of the word "contrée", it means land or region, and not literally a self-governing nation.

Well, I thought it was funny, if that's any consolation.

Of course not, Cousin Larry, don't be ridiculous.

Seriously, the new French president (Sarkozy) is probably the best friend that federalism has ever had. He has gone out of his way to change his country's official relationship with Quebec from "politely interested but neutral" to "want to see Quebec as a solid culture within the country of Canada". His stance alone finally cripples one of the great soverigntist fantasies, that once the "glorious day" arrives, France would ride to Quebec's rescue.

I think Sarkozy needs to have a little chat with his PM in order to clarify the difference between "nation" and "country."

/and yes, there's a large difference, particularly in French

There is a bit of a difference between a couple of hundred years and a couple of thousand. Besides, getting sold off to prop up the French pastry industry can't be a good feeling.

"I wish the earthquake had engulfed that miserable Acadia instead of Lisbon and Mequines."

"One pities that poor human race that slits its throat on our continent about a few acres of ice in Canada."

"You know that these two nations are at war about a few acres of snow somewhere around Canada, and that they are spending on this beautiful war more than all Canada is worth."

"Would I dare, I would beg you on my knees to forever rid the government of France from Canada. If you lose it, you lose almost nothing."

"I like peace more than Canada, and I believe that France can be happy without Québec."

- Voltaire, big fan of Québec and Canada

I wonder how many of these incidents were the direct result of people feeding the cute animals? A bear, and maybe even a bobcat and coyote, that loses its fear of humans and associates them instead with food is a dangerous animal.

That's funny because I'm an English-speaking Canadian (Nova Scotia) and I don't hate French-Canadians. I do hate arrogant, willfully ignorant xenophobes who would rather have Canada fall apart just to satisfy their sumg sense of superiority than to try and make Canada better country for everybody though.

Maybe you ought to learn to speak for yourself, or just not speak at all.

I guess that's why both times they tried to leave, TROC was so involved in the "no" campaign?

You know, I've popped all this popcorn, got my lawn chair out, and lit the grill, so where the hell is this great Canadian Civil War? I've been waiting for about 4 years for this! Do you know how pricy propane is these days?!?

Nicolas Sarkozy is very good as coming across as everything's and everyone's best friend, and downright brilliant to appear to go out of his way to do things. The problem is that it's all he ever does.

A lot of people in france came to realize what was, imo, obvious from the start: sarkozy is all talk and hot air.

I'm a an English-speaking Albertan. I like French Canadians so much I married one and fathered another.

The funny thing is, back on the farm her western francophone family mostly thinks Quebecers need to lighten up and stop being so sensitive. Which is what's happening anyway. Quebec separatists are starting to look like a bunch of played-out geezers whereas young Quebecers just want to live their lives.

And to top it off, it took Canada to help them get their country back. Remind us not to do them anymore favours.

The current French PM is a douche.

I'm tempted to say the US is no longer the only place left with a Bush at the top, but that's not quite right: The new Mayor of London is more of a fat Dan Quayle and the Italian PM is a clever lad, for all that he's an amoral mafioso who makes Richard Nixon look like a saint.

Agreed, the amount of ignorant anti-French comments I hear from people whenever someone even mentions Quebec makes me sick. The majority of the time it has nothing to do with politics and is racism pure and simple. And I hate to say it but the wave of American anti-French sentiment post Iraq influenced people here to be even more anti-French Canadian than they already were, when we had the exact same stance as the French did in regards to our decision to not be involved in Iraq, we just didn't have a security council seat to veto it's proposal in the UN.

I see what you did there.

In a mouldering cave where the wretched retreat,
Britannia sat wasted with care;
She mourned for her Wolfe, and exclaim'd against fate
And gave herself up to despair.
The walls of her cell she had sculptured around
With the feats of her favorite son;
And even the dust, as it lay on the ground,
Was engraved with the deeds he had done.

The sire of the Gods, from his crystalline throne,
Beheld the disconsolate dame,
And moved with her tears, he sent Mercury down,
And these were the tidings that came:
"Britannia forbear, not a sigh nor a tear
For thy Wolfe so deservedly loved,
Your tears shall be changed into triumphs of joy,
For thy Wolfe is not dead but removed.

"The sons of the East, the proud giants of old.
Have crept from their darksome abodes,
And this is the news as in Heaven it was told,
They were marching to war with the Gods;
A Council was held in the chambers of Jove,
And this was their final decree,
That Wolfe should be called to the armies above,
And the charge was intrusted to me.

"To the plains of Quebec with the orders I flew,
He begg'd for a moment's delay;
He cry'd 'Oh! forbear, let me victory hear,
And then thy command I'll obey.'
With a darksome thick film I encompass'd his eyes,
And bore him away in an urn,
Lest the fondness he bore to his own native shore,
Should induce him again to return."

-- "The Death Of General Wolfe" by Thomas Paine
