I liked [loved?] Joy Division when i was a teenager... but now that i'm in my early 20's, I can take a step back and look at their work objectively and with a clear mind...
i hope i don't get flamed for this, but...
a) some [NOT ALL] of Ian's lyrics were a little like [bad] high school poetry. A small number. The rest were great.
[i'll think of some examples]
mind you, he came up with a lot of great lyrics for songs, even some great stand-alone one-liners or stanzas.

b) Ian has an interesting singing voice. I wouldn't necessarily say he's a *GOOD* or *GREAT* singer, but he does the most with what he has.... a emotion [dispair? anger? frustration? etc.] filled haunting baritone.

c) the bassist and drummer [forget their names... one of their last names is Hook] are FREAKING AWESOME. Putting the drums to the fore as a sort of "lead instrument" [you could also say they did that with the bass on some songs] is genius and different and gives each song a very interesting sound.

d) the synth sound they used [or maybe just the actual synth they used in general] sounds quite awful in some live recordings. [harsh, off key, warbling, etc.]

What the fark is wrong with you? Is this the first time you've ever read a music thread? You're being entirely too polite and, jesus, would you look at this...providing a rational argument about why you don't like something. Somebody throw this guy out on his ear, and don't let'em back in until he's gotten nice and drunk!

I hate it when people call Joy Division "post punk" -there was nothing "post punk" about them. I think it's possible that after Ian died -that there was something "post punk" about New Order.

About his gravestone -I'm sure it was stolen by some fan and I don't care. (Not Post Punk -POPS)

Your opinion matters, why? I'm 41, and I think you're a critical, pretentious little a$$hole. I was listening to this music before you were even born. When I listen to music, I don't tear things apart, note for note, I listen to the overall feeling of it. I'm not a nitpicking little pr*ck.

you guys are just mad because Third Uncle Eno is right. I like Joy Division. Closer is farking great.... but the rest of their catalogue is a bit spotty. Unknown Pleasure is good, but not really that great. (Come on, I refuse to believe anyone can really sit through the entirety of She's Lost Control. easily their most over-rated track) And the live portion of Still is pretty damn awful.

as far as Control goes, I wouldn't mind seeing it, but I really can't fathom not just one but TWO movies about a band that was only around for about 3 years.

Dude, WTF? i mean... wow... WTF??
did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed or something?
or did you just start ranting/flaming me as soon as your eyes finished reading it?

my opinion matters why?
dude... this is Fark. opinions abound. some you might like, some you might not like.

I guess I didn't make it as clear as i would've liked to in my post, but I STILL like / Love Joy Division.

I wasn't CRITISIZING or BASHING them.
I don't tear things apart, note by note (well most of the time, anyway... tho there are times when i get too analytical).
I was merely making objective observations about them.
besides.... everybody's entitled to their opinion.

i guess my "I liked [loved?] Joy Division when i was a teenager... but now that i'm in my early 20's, I can take a step back and look at their work objectively and with a clear mind..." wasn't worded correctly. At all. maybe that's what put you off...

it might've looked like it, but i was NOT saying "i liked/loved them before, but I don't as much now, because i can take a step back and see that they weren't as great as i thought"
NOT THAT AT ALL.
In fact, it's just the OPPOSITE.
I was just saying that now that I'm out of my "fan boy haze/coloured glasses" phase regarding them, and be just a regular fan, now I can look at them more objectively.
I still think they're good / great, i still like them at lot. I still listen to "closer" [easily one of the top 5 albums of the 80's] and a few official bootlegs ["unknown pleasures"...not so much].

besides, even if i didn't like them as much now, who cares? tastes change.

So yes, I am a fan of JD.
Clearly, you are a big fan of them. Most likely a lot bigger fan [in every way?] than I am. Thusly, you defended them, since you saw "injustice" or something in my post.
I would most likely do the same thing about a band I love [although not with any of the offensive langauge that you put in your reply]. [ie. band i love = Gabriel Era Genesis, King Crimson, Brian Eno, Dire Straits, etc.]

You say when you listen to music, you just "listen to the overall feeling of it".
I do that too, most of the time.
But tell me, do you ever analyze the lyrics or music *at all*??

THIS.

Thank you for your post.

I also think that "Unknown Pleasures" is good, [especially good for a debut album], and sure it broke new ground but I find it's kind of overrated...
Yes it has a bunch of great songs [maybe half the album] but the rest of the songwriting quality isn't up to the awesome heights that "Closer" would be. [but then again, how could you expect it to?]
Nevertheless, I don't really put it on very much anymore.
Same with "Still"... methinks I bought it just to somewhat-complete or round out my JD collection...

However, how they went from the content/quality of "Unknown Pleasures" to "Closer" in just a year or so is just freaking unbelievably incredible.
Oh, and the "Les Bains Douches Vol. 1" album is a great live album.
They were a great, energetic, rocking live act.

where is the soul?

you know, some people [aka. the 'unbelievers'] [NOT ME] might describe JD's songs/music as "cold, robotic, clinical, lacking soul, and warmth".

Ah, that's why. Not really, your opinion's no more valid than anyone else's.

41 and still substituting dollar signs for the letter S? That'$ $o $illy.

Criticism's a skill, decoding music's fun; more fun than being an aggressive dick anyhow.
