I would love to see the mainstream media grow some cubes and start, as a standard practice, showing politicians from both sides of the aisle, video evidence of their comments when they deny them. Don't wait until the next day. Cue it up right there on set with them.

I would appreciate GMA playing the video tomorrow to expose the outright lie they had a hand in disseminating, but I doubt their corporate masters would allow it. Goodbye into obscurity broadcast TV, we hardly knew ye (until recently as stenographers)

True, but if there were any real journalists left, they would skillfully provide the context.

Then again, it's difficult to do that when you have 30 seconds until you have to sell some more chewing gum.

When Republicans say things you have to interpret the words properly, like with the bible. Stupid Libs will always try to focus on the obvious meaning of statements.

And when they found our shadows
Groups 'round the TV sets
They ran down every lead
They repeated every test
They checked out all the data in their lists
And then the alien anthropologists
Admitted they were still perplexed
But on eliminating every other reason
For our sad demise
They logged the only explanation left
This species has amused itself to death
No tears to cry
No feelings left
This species has amused itself to death
Amused itself to death

I would honestly predict the latter. At 98 years old its hard to remember more than which pills you took that morning and which cartoon you were watching while you took them.

Scarier thought.

To have any shot in November, he needs to pick Jesus (not a nickname for someone, literally Jesus Christ) as his running mate, and have someone bolt his mouth shut until after the elections are over.

I kind of feel sorry for the guy really. He used to be looked up to by many. Turns out that he's just as shady as the rest of them.

Why would McCain appear on national television and say something he knows to be false? Given his emphasis, especially lately, on honesty in the campaign, why take the risk by lying like this?

I dunno.

The sad thing is that a president, in his original role, wasn't supposed to understand economics in any way. He wasn't supposed to be trying to run the economy.

If any of the Fark Independents come in to this thread and rail on McCain about the twisting of words and a change in position...I'll eat my hat.

As it stands, this thread will get ignored for the most part since those people that would usually post in here are railing on Obama for not holding his hand over his heart during the national anthem on TF right now.

rufus-t-firefly:

Which part are you referring to?

Public Funding
The campaign went even further in answers to a questionnaire sent to the various political campaigns in September 2007 by the Midwest Democracy Network. The questionnaire posed a very simple question to the candidates: "If you are nominated for President in 2008 and your major opponents agree to forgo private funding in the general election campaign, will you participate in the presidential public financing system?"

Obama's Response
In February 2007, I proposed a novel way to preserve the strength of the public financing system in the 2008 election. My plan requires both major party candidates to agree on a fundraising truce, return excess money from donors, and stay within the public financing system for the general election. My proposal followed announcements by some presidential candidates that they would forgo public financing so they could raise unlimited funds in the general election. The Federal Election Commission ruled the proposal legal, and Senator John McCain (R-AZ) has already pledged to accept this fundraising pledge. If I am the Democratic nominee, I will aggressively pursue an agreement with the Republican nominee to preserve a publicly financed general election.

Sniper fire is an easy one.

And the poster I responded to said you have to listen to republicans and interpret their words like you would the bible (which when invoked in this matter refers to a book of lies)

So which one made me an asshat? Actually saying that Democrats might lie too?

Nothing, and there's nothing wrong with a President who realizes that he needs to rely on the advice of smart people with specialized knowledge. But the issue here is not that he said that, but that he denied having said it.

Well, I think I have more of a problem with saying one thing and then denying that you said it later.

That'd be more important than any actual knowledge about the economy.

Of course, admitting you don't pump your own gas, or know how to use a computer, or don't know much about the economy is no way to get elected President.

Good for him for admitting his lack of expertise before. The problem here is that he's lying about the fact that he admitted it in the first place.

So, after McCain had violated the policy for accepting public funding in the primaries, breaking his own law and possibly committing felonies, Obama chooses to forgo public funding in the general, which McCain had never agreed to.

Obama, rather than accept tax money or PAC/lobby money, instead chooses to go with his own brand of "public funding" and calls it such.

McCain then attacks Obama for 'breaking his word.'

The media goes along, essentially forgetting that McCain is currently breaking his own law and has defrauded his creditors.

Gawsh, in context that questionnaire (and everything else Obama had said on the matter) sure is damning!

Andric 2008-07-03 11:42:50 AM
Seems like McCain needs to make a Google and think about these things before trying to pull a fast one -- again.

Firemarshalbill:Exactly. I gave him a lot of credit when he said he needed to be educated on economics. This is BS.

I gave him credit too, for being honest, but his idea of a "gas tax holiday" is exactly why I want a President who is *currently* educated in economics... or at least not a peddler of cheap gimmicks.

Economics is an important thing to be educated in. Advisors make up for a candidates deficiencies, but either McCain is unable or unwilling to listen, his advisors are idiots, or he just wants to get quick votes by saving everybody a few bucks on gas over the summer - like, $30.

You know, i disagree with this. He should know somthing. Not as much as the expert, but at least enough to get what he's saying. For example:

I work for a reseach team as a chemist. I work on a film for optics. I understand how to make, apply and cure a functional film of the proper color. I am not a physicist, and don't have a incredably in depth knowledge of optics, such that i am not sure if it is even physicists that know about that kind of thing. But i know somthing, i know enough to understand a optics person. You have to know that much, admitting you don't understand is bad, especially when you have a deadline.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with not knowing everything you should know about a topic. You can do research and listen to advisers. But why lie about what you said? That's just dumb.

El Morro 2008-07-03 12:14:06 PM
It's stuff like this that really signals the death knell for MSM, and keeps giving people reason to not bother watching it anymore.

The smart thing to do is to develop an entire division of the news organization to keep updated on various blogs when they call out politicians on things like this (especially when they have video and cites), see what's true, what's not, and if it's something that's relevant and verified, to send it up the ladder to be incorporated into the main news reports.

Especially in this situation, where it's just a cut and dry case of McCain flat out lying. There really is NO excuse for ignoring something like this.

Not like it matters all that much. Thank God that McCain's screwups are well documented. If we left it up to the MSM, we'd have no idea about it, other than a blurb at the end of the newscast saying, "Of course, McCains detractors allege that he has contradicted himself on his policy proposals. McCain's representatives were unavailable for comment. Back to you, Tom!"
