My vote is some goddamned viral marketing.

Irregardless 2008-07-03 02:20:12 AM
They need to show up in banks like that and ask for money. You could also show up at strangers houses unannounced and ask for their cars.

Good fun.

Confabulat [TotalFark] 2008-07-03 02:22:08 AM
I've watched Doctor Who. This sort of thing happens once or twice every year in London.

SockMonkeyHolocaust 2008-07-03 02:23:31 AM
Well, I find my ability to discuss the nature of celebrity and our a shallow culture based on aesthetics has been energized and I think it's time we finally had a frank and serious discussion about WHAT IT ALL MEANS.

I wish I could punch viral marketers in the balls.

Is this news? Really?

NihilisticShrew 2008-07-03 02:49:29 AM
Damn, beaten to the Doctor Who reference. Oh well, back to my corner then.

Bill_Wick's_Friend 2008-07-03 02:50:35 AM
I'd guess it's promo for The Prisoner remake, based on their natty clothes.

Viral marketing prank, or a commentary on the surveillance state of Great Britain

/aliens

shuff1967 [TotalFark] 2008-07-03 03:08:14 AM
Of course it's viral marketing:

Please be something cooler!

The short version -- Google "Faceless people," get facelesspeople.com. The Lotus car line's logo is at the bottom of the page. The color and shape of the logo matches these lapel tags worn by the faceless people. FacelessPeople.com, the domain, is owned by Lotus Cars.

That sums it up.

/was going for the DW reference too

Teopcigart 2008-07-03 05:31:41 AM
Sigh. I knew I should have come to Fark earlier; missed out on the chance to make the Doctor Who joke.

The Crack Kid 2008-07-03 05:31:47 AM
Awww, I was hoping it was a wicked cool protest against Fark's favorite British topic, CCTV cameras.

Why's it always got to be selling something?

baltimoreblonde 2008-07-03 05:33:49 AM
Thought the Autons were back.

/yes, that was my DW joke

dudemanbro [TotalFark] 2008-07-03 05:34:55 AM

Viral marketing for M. Night Shyamalan's newest movie titled
"Metaphor for every character I've ever created".

Last of the Crazy People 2008-07-03 05:45:53 AM
Meh, I was going to say viral marketing for the next X-files movie.

Nevertheless what a load of shiate.

Regisque 2008-07-03 05:48:47 AM
Lotus has a timer for the revealing of what appears to be a new car on their website the timer on the website http://www.facelesspeople.com/ matches up to about 8 hours apart but since they are currently at 460 some odd hours I figure they are probably supposed to be the same.

musicmanboston 2008-07-03 05:48:54 AM
i for one support our new faceless overlords.

dudemanbro [TotalFark] 2008-07-03 05:49:12 AM

Seconded. Glad she's back with the Doctor. At least for a bit...

Actually, despite this viral campaign, Lotus cars are fantastic to drive. I've driven the Elise a couple of times. For the money, it's a great sports car, although the Elise lacks things like a carpet, electric windows etc.

Just make sure they don't try to get you to start moving around their giant piles of sand with a set of tweezers.

BenR 2008-07-03 05:58:55 AM
I'm sure it was all explained in the press release the Daily Mail got that prompted them to go looking for the photos.

danextbillgates 2008-07-03 06:04:37 AM
the one with the driver *one of the originals* kind of reminds me of a backstreet boy ... and in the more recent pics he is with a blonde woman ... and if i recall correctly ... he has a blonde wife ...

Copthill 2008-07-03 06:05:05 AM
I thought celebrities had finally figured out how to arrive somewhere anonymously and not get photographed leaving looking wasted and wired.

Well, that's what I'd do at least.

ThisSideofSteinway - I LOVE that book...now you've made me want to go reread it for the umpteenth time.

"With the blankest of blank expressions on their faces, these mysterious figures have been popping up in the most unlikely of places."..........Um, eh, what is a likely place for a faceless person to pop up, I'll be sure to stay away.

If it is, they failed, and people already figured out what it was for and are losing interest.

Nakito - yeah, but they seem a tad too calm for that...

JonnyBGoode 2008-07-03 06:18:51 AM
I just did a whois, and facelesspeople.com is registered with Lotus.

Yeah, fail. This viral marketing was way way too easy to pierce.
