Django- YES!

Grapelli- not so much. I could never stomach the violin tone in Jazz.

Every time I hear Django I think one thing: TWO FRAKKING FINGERS. Jebus Christ, dude musta had some supernatural powers or something.

Between the five of them they had enough hair tonic on their melons to float a raft!

Djanjo's good stuff. Too bad he kicked it so early in life, but don't all the truly great ones go that way?

Biréli Lagrène (^) may play with all four fingers, but otherwise, he's a faithful student of Django. Worth a listen.

I'm going to assume that not everyone hear knows the Django story - he was a gifted violinist as a child, his gypsy wagon burned down, and his fingers were mostly burned off. He makes those amazing single note runs by sliding his fingers up the fret board while flat picking faster than anyone can imagine, and unbelievably cleanly at that. Try it, it's REALLY hard to make those notes come out clean when you do that.

I farking love this clip, and never get tired of playing it. The baby I hang out with loves it, too. Seven months old and every time he hears it he stops whatever he's doing and listens to the whole thing. He's got good musical taste at an early age.

Two interesting Django-related facts - I'm pretty sure these are common knowledge, but worth repeating:

1. After losing two of the fingertips of his fretting hand in a factor accident, Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath was inspired to pick the guitar back up after hearing Django and learning his story.

2. The Allman Brothers song "Jessica" was Dicky Betts's attempt to create a line that could be played with only two fingers, as a tribute to Django.

no one still comes close. there's also a youtube video about a festival in france they throw every year in honor of him thats got some great jazz guitar in it as well.

i dont. he wouldve been just as amazing had all his stuff been exactly like it is, but the fingers were never lost. i didnt even know about the 2 finger thing til a few years after i first got turned onto him.

what most people dont get is that the stuff he was doing on electric before he died was his most incredible music AND playing. i never understood why nobody pays attention to that stuff.

also-i have the session he did when he was 18/19 on banjo and he already sounds exactly like what we are familiar with now. if you want to blow someone away with some burning guitar, play any of the 'improvisations', theres 3 or 4 and theyre all insane.

They're both awesome. I have a couple of Grapelli records that are just ridiculously good.

Incomparable swing and phrasing.

It's the rhythm & swing that I love about Django's music. I didn't even know he only used 2 fingers. Holy CRAP! Grapelli is sweetest sounding violinist i've ever heard.

I really like his work with the groups Bar Kokhba and Masada String Trio, and with his wife, Sylvie Courvoisier.

On the other hand, I probably liked the Abercrombie album you hated, so who knows?
