No, more like this part:
Barry Erwin, director of the Council for a Better Louisiana, said a Senate bill signed into law by the governor only last week eased the regulations enough to head off even more defections from those panels.

The strict ethics bill has been softened.

I can't believe that many people flipped out at having to do public disclosure. It's not that tough, and the information is not that in depth. I've had to do it before. Big whoop.

And I know that most of these people haven't done anything wrong, and they're just resigning out of protest for the invasion of their privacy, but when you hold a position of public trust, sometimes you've got to bite the bullet and realize you are going to be held to a higher standard.

Not to get picky, but the headline implied that Jindal signed a bill strengthening ethics laws, as opposed to relaxing them.

The ethics laws were strengthened compared to what they used to be, just not as much as originally proposed. What you are saying is the same as the politicians who increase a budget by 5% and then say it was a budget cut because they originally requested 10%. It's still a budget increase.

FTA "Barry Erwin, director of the Council for a Better Louisiana, said a Senate bill signed into law by the governor only last week eased the regulations enough to head off even more defections from those panels."

And those Ethics boards will now have newer, more...amenable...people placed on them. If anyone thinks that LA politics will ever be cleaned up, they're out of their mind. LA politicians are either feeding at the trough or using "reform" to find a spot at the table.

Jindal is just covering his inexperience and incompetence for another few years with an eye towards the 2012 GOP Vice President spot.

Jeez, Jindal promised the State legislators that the huge salary increase they just voted themselves was OK by him and would not be vetoed. When the public started a recall petitions for Jindal, he suddenly changed his mind, vetoed the measure and decided the pay raise was "excessive" - before http://www.recalljindal.com went live.

Louisiana has the political ethics of West Africa or Mexico. Corruption is institutionalized and it is going to take more than a watered down ethics bill to fix it.

spiderland 2008-07-02 07:54:42 PM
The long-term impact of the resignations on most boards wasn't clear - resignations were still being reported Tuesday night. But one board was clearly decimated - the Ethics Board itself.

YAY AMERICA!

While I applaud Jindal for cracking down on purely volunteer positions, will he be so vigilant when it comes time to ask for earmarks? I'm sure he'll have his hand out, ready to take taxpayer dollars to give to his campaign donors like everybody else.

What do any of those have to do with ethics reform? Listing off entirely irrelevant names or talking points and saying "end of discussion" is stupid.

They resigned because their job isn't fun anymore when it's hard to steal tax money.

It's too bad more DIDN'T resign. I'd be happier if every one of those farkers left office.
