(Starpulse) Obvious Brian May is upset that Queen's performance during the Nelson Mandela birthday concert wasn't aired on TV. Obviously even British TV producers think Queen sucks with Paul Rodgers singing   (starpulse.com) divider line 36

I know that Queen played the Bad Co. tune "All Right Now".
Does anybody know what else they played?

Paul Rogets sang for Free as well.
They played We are The Champions...that's all I caught.

I think Paul Rodgers is a good singer, though Bad Company stunk. Free was a way better band...check out their Isle of Wight performance from 1970ish.

Did they play any actual Queen tunes?

I saw it on TV. Strange. Anyway, didn't Queen ignore the sanctions against South Africa because of apartheid and went to play there anyway? I guess all is forgiven.

I'm a huge Queen fan, have been most of my life, and when they announced the Paul Rodgers pairing, I winced and refused to pay it any heed. But then I was channel surfing one night and the local PBS station was running their DVD Return of the Champions for a fundraiser. And by god.. as much as I hate to say it... it works. I think it works because Rodgers doesn't try to mimic Freddy but simply do it in his style. Granted... it's not as great as the original but still entertaining in it's own right. Roger's solo rendition of These Are the Days of Our Lives is especially touching. You can see it here (new window).

I realized what a unique talent Freddie was when I watched his tribute concert. With the exception of George Michael, every other performance genuinely sucked. He was one of a kind. RIP.

What an odd choice. How do you think that conversation went?

Brian: "How about Paul Rodgers?"
Roger: "Really? Didn't he sing for Bad Company?"
John: "Yeah, and his voice doesn't exactly fit with our repertoire."
Brian: "But Paul's a really nice guy. And Fred met him once or twice and said he was pretty cool."
John: "Okay then."
Roger: "Yeah, that settles it then.
Brian: "Okay, great! Queen with Paul Rodgers it is then.

They should just get that guy Mika to sing for them. Not only does he sound just like Freddie, but he's just as gay.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

This!

Paul Rodgers is an excellent singer but then there's the similarity to his doppelganger Danny Bonaduce. Yikes!

It ain't Queen without Freddie Mercury. It's Bad Queen.

I've thought about that, too. Then I wondered if he had the hard-rock chops that Freddie could muster for songs like, "Hammer To Fall", "Tie Your Mother Down" and "Princes Of The Universe".

Probably not. But then, frankly, who does?

metalmyth 2008-07-02 02:45:39 PM
I think Paul Rodgers is a great singer, though he is obviously not Freddie Mercury. I think any singer who tried to fill those shoes would get a lot of contempt for not being like the original (because who could be like FM?)but Rodgers does an admirable job.

Also, Another One bites the Dust came on the radio as I was typing this. Weird.

queen not using george michael is so wrong.

I found it odd that Queen was playing this concert because, as previously mentioned, they had played South Africa (Sun City) during the apartheid years.

I find it satisfying that their performance was not shown on the television version. Brian May has no room to talk about "bad decisions".

Queen with Paul Rodgers works.

Live.

I am not looking forward to their new studio album. That could be because Queen stopped making truly good studio albums around 1980 though.

You really can't blame Paul Rodgers for not being Freddie Mercury....because there was only one Freddie. Paul doesn't try to be Freddie & still manages to pull it off. Full marks to Paul, who's a legend in his own right, for taking up the Queen mantle & making the songs work.

I'm curious how the new CD will sound, & wonder if they got the Foo Fighters (Dave &/or Taylor) involved?

/respects Freddie Mercury's contribution to rock immensely

Its not astrophysics.

People don't know about Queen's short-lived 1981 lineup.

From left to right: Brian May, Freddie Mercury, Little Brian May, Roger Taylor, and Deacon John.

Little Brian May was brought on board to help the group re-connect with the 80s rock and roll kids, but he left after only one week, ashamed of his freakishly long right thumb. Deacon John also went back to using John Deacon.

Gary Cherone's performance at the Mercury Tribute smokes George Michael's, to be honest. GM would've been a bad idea too.

From what I've heard from Brian May and Roger Taylor, they didn't want to replace Freddie. That would be impossible because there was only one. Getting someone who sounded like him would only have him compared to Freddie and inevitably being laughed at.

I've never minded Paul Rogers (that's when I first saw Queen because I wasn't alive during The Magic Tour) so it's all I have to go with.

Oh well, I'm looking forward to the new album to hear how Brian May and Roger Taylor have changed over the years.

That's not Paul Rodgers singing. It's Roger Taylor aka Queen's drummer and sometimes vocalist.

I always wondered why Queen never gave it a try with George Michael or even David Bowie as a frontman.

Free - Fire and Water CD... is great stuff. All Right Now is on that one but really its overshadowed by many of the other songs nobody knows.

I don't really see Rogers being a good match for Queen.....nether are bad, but on paper its sounds wrong. Have not heard them yet. Rogers is more suited for blues or soul. Bad Company seemed rather flat the few times I heard them on the radio. My understanding is they were a mix of serveral bands former members....Free, King Crimson, Mott The Hoople. At least if I remember what my uncle told me is right. Anyways Bad Company was not nearly as good as any of those former bands IMO, although the King Crimson version that the bass player came from (I think)...was not my favorite phase of King Crimson (they changed people a lot except for Fripp.

As a big Queen fan, I'd have to say I've been pleased with the Q+PR lineup.

Actually, Brian May has a doctorate in astrophysics.

My initial reaction to Paul Rogers joining Queen was WTF?, but it works very well, I saw them twice. A showman like Freddie is one of a kind, but Q+PR are still easily one of the best acts around.

Brian and Roger are both also great singers, so yes, it's not the same, but still awesome.
